Interview With "Tótem" Director/Writer Lila Avilés
"Tótem" had its world premiere at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival, where it received strong reviews but mostly flew under the radar all year until it was selected as Mexico's entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards. Now, it has become the little movie that could this awards season, scoring Gotham and Independent Spirit Award nominations. Director/Writer Lila Avilés ("The Chambermaid") was kind enough to speak with us about the film, her work on it, and what it has meant to her for it to come this far, with possibly further to go. Director Kaouther Ben Hania's ("The Man Who Sold His Skin") film recently won the Gotham Award for Best Documentary Feature and has now been nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary Feature. It is campaigning for an Oscar nomination in the Best Documentary Feature category but is also the Tunisian entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards. Interview With "Memory" Star Peter Sarsgaard
"Memory" had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where actor Peter Sarsgaard won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor for his performance in Michel Franco's latest film. Acting opposite Jessica Chastain, Sarsgaard convincingly plays a man with dementia in a surprisingly uplifting human drama and love story where light can be found in the sometimes darkest places. He was kind enough to spend a few moments of his time following the film's screening at the AFI Film Festival, talking with us about his performance in the film, working with Chastain, Franco, and more. Ketchup Entertainment will give the film an awards qualifying run on December 22nd before releasing it in more theaters on January 5th, 2024.
