"Masters Of The Air" premiered on Apple TV+ at the beginning of the year, earning strong reviews for its storytelling, performances, and incredible craftsmanship, rightfully earning its place alongside the legendary WWII miniseries "Band of Brothers" (2001) and "The Pacific" (2010). Based on the 2007 book by Donald L. Miller, the show follows the actions of the 100th Bomb Group, a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bomber unit in the Eighth Air Force in eastern England during World War II. Actor Callum Turner, who plays Major John "Bucky" Egan, Visual Effects Supervisor Xavier Matia Bernasconi, and Virtual Production Executive Steve Jelly were all kind enough to spend some time talking with us about their work on the show. "Firebrand" had its world premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, where it received solid reviews for its telling of Katherine Parr (Alicia Vikander), Queen of England, and the wife and widow of Henry VIII (Jude Law). Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz ("The Invisible Life Of Euridice Gusmao") made his first film in the English language with this adaptation of the 2013 novel "Queen's Gambit" by Elizabeth Fremantle, with an emphasis on the costumes, the production design, and the perspective of Parr. Jharrel Jerome made Emmy history when he won television's top prize for his work in Ava DuVernay's "When They See Us." Just 21 years old, Jerome became the youngest person to win Lead Actor in a Limited Series and the first Afro-Latino actor to be nominated for and win an Emmy in any category. Five years later, Jerome has returned to the awards race, playing a 13-foot-tall man in Boots Riley's genre-bending "I'm a Virgo." The "Sorry to Bother You" filmmaker turns to television with a coming-of-age story that is equal parts heart-warming, thought-provoking, and evocative. A sharp satire about capitalism, race, and media (among many other things), Jerome infuses the many turns of Riley's script with empathy, tenderness, and seriously impressive range.
