"Spider-Man: No Way Home"
This week, Cody Dericks & Danilo Castro joined our main podcast review to discuss the third installment in Jon Watts' stand-alone Spider-Man trilogy between Sony and Marvel with "Spider-Man: No Way Home" starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina & Jamie Foxx. It's an ambitious film, even for Marvel, as it attempts to wrap up several storylines, introduce a few surprises and provide emotional closure for the character of Peter Parker. What did we think of the storyline, the multiple villains, the visual effects, performances, and more? We discuss all of these points in our NON-SPOILER review and then dive into spoilers towards the end. But let's face it, you're all going to see this at some point or another, right? Interview With "Swan Song" Director/Writer, Benjamin Cleary
"Swan Song" (not to be confused with the indie film starring Udo Kier released earlier this year) is the first narrative feature from Oscar-winning director Benjamin Cleary (Best Live Action Short for "Stutterer") and also the first leading role for the film's star, 2-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali. The film is a thinking person's sci-fi with an emotional core allowing for some deep questions on mortality. Benjamin was kind enough to sit with me after the film's world premiere at the AFI Film Festival and discuss his ideas behind the film, the collaborations with the actors and craft departments, what he has coming up next, and more! Be sure to check out the film now streaming on Apple TV+ and enjoy!Check out more on NextBestPicture.comPlease subscribe on...SoundCloud - https://soundcloud.com/nextbestpicturepodcastiTunes Podcasts - https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/negs-best-film-podcast/id1087678387?mt=2Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/7IMIzpYehTqeUa1d9EC4jTAnd be sure to help support us on Patreon for as little as $1 a month at https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Learn more about your ad choices. "The Matrix"
THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPictureIt cannot be overstated just how groundbreaking Lana and Lilly Wachowski's 1999 sci-fi action masterpiece "The Matrix" was at the time of its release and how influential it has been in the years since. Its popularity has spurred multiple sequels (including a new one next week), spin-offs, and imitators across the film industry who tried to replicate the lightning in a bottle the sisters caught. Starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, and Joe Pantoliano in iconic roles, the film either turned them into household names or cemented their reputations. Twenty-two years later, we decided to go back to the Matrix and discuss the first film's themes, action scenes, characters, visual effects (including the legendary use of "bullet-time"), its awards run, and more! Joining me for this throwback podcast review, I have Josh Parham, Lauren LaMagna & Dan Bayer. Take that red pill, plug yourself back in and enjoy!Check out more on NextBestPicture.comPlease subscribe on...SoundCloud - https://soundcloud.com/nextbestpicturepodcastiTunes Podcasts - https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/negs-best-film-podcast/id1087678387?mt=2Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/7IMIzpYehTqeUa1d9EC4jTAnd be sure to help support us on Patreon for as little as $1 a month at https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Learn more about your ad choices. Interview With "Being The Ricardos" Director/Writer, Aaron Sorkin
"Being The Ricardos" is the third feature film directed by Academy Award-winning writer Aaron Sorkin after "Molly's Game" and "The Trial Of The Chicago 7." The film has garnered praise for its performances from Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem, who both received Golden Globe nominations for their work recently, while Sorkin received Critics Choice and Golden Globe nominations for his screenplay. Despite this, the film and Sorkin have faced scrutiny over the casting of Kidman and particularly Bardem as the iconic duo of Lucile Ball and Desi Arnaz. Making his second appearance on the show two years in a row, Sorkin addressed this criticism again, spoke about his initial ideas behind the project, what he's learned as a director, working with the actors, and more. Interviews With "Encounter" Star, Riz Ahmed & Sound Supervisor, Andrew Stirk
"Encounter" premiered earlier this year at the Telluride Film Festival, where its leading star, Academy Award-nominee Riz Ahmed, received a special tribute. The film went on to play at the Toronto International Film Festival and is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Many have praised the work of Ahmed as a veteran looking to save his sons from an unknown threat, but another element that has been called out is the sound work. Ahmed and supervising Sound Editor Andrew Stirk were kind enough to speak with us about their work on the film, which you can listen to down below. Thank you and enjoy!Check out more on NextBestPicture.comPlease subscribe on...SoundCloud - https://soundcloud.com/nextbestpicturepodcastiTunes Podcasts - https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/negs-best-film-podcast/id1087678387?mt=2Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/7IMIzpYehTqeUa1d9EC4jTAnd be sure to help support us on Patreon for as little as $1 a month at https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Learn more about your ad choices. "Being The Ricardos"
For our second review this week, Josh Parham, Dan Bayer & Lauren LaMagna joined me to discuss the latest film from Academy Award-winner Aaron Sorkin, "Being The Ricardos," starring Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem. The two actors are playing Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz behind the camera and Lucy and Ricky Ricardo in front of the camera from the famous television show "I Love Lucy." There has been some controversy surrounding their casting, and the movie has received mixed reviews from critics. What did we think of it, though? What did we think of the performances, writing, and storytelling structure? We discuss all of these topics and the film's awards season chances in our review down below. Please take a listen and enjoy!Check out more on NextBestPicture.comPlease subscribe on...SoundCloud - https://soundcloud.com/nextbestpicturepodcastiTunes Podcasts - https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/negs-best-film-podcast/id1087678387?mt=2Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/7IMIzpYehTqeUa1d9EC4jTAnd be sure to help support us on Patreon for as little as $1 a month at https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Learn more about your ad choices. Interview With "The Hand Of God" Director/Writer, Paolo Sorrentino & Star, Filippo Scotti
"The Hand Of God" premiered earlier this year at the Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize, and its breakout star, Filippo Scotti, won the Marcello Mastroianni Award. Based on the early life of its writer and director, Paolo Sorrentino, the film is a personal re-telling of growing up in Italy, with beautiful cinematography and naturalistic performances, especially from Scotti in his on-screen debut. The film has been chosen as the Italian submission for Best International Feature at this year's Academy Awards and has received Golden Globe and Critics Choice nominations for Best Foreign Language Film. Paolo and Filippo were kind enough to spend some time talking with us about their work on the film, which you can listen to down below. The film is now playing in limited release and will be available to stream on Netflix on December 15th. Enjoy! "West Side Story"
This week, Josh Parham, Dan Bayer, Eve O'Dea, Cody Dericks & Daniel Howat joined our main podcast review to discuss Steven Spielberg's "West Side Story," starring Rachel Zegler, Ansel Elgort, Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist & Rita Moreno. Based on the 1957 stage musical of the same name, which was later made into a Best Picture Oscar-winning film, the film has been adapted by Tony Kushner and injected with a 2021 sensibility for its storytelling and marking the first time Steven Spielberg has ever directed a movie musical. There's so much to discuss from the acting by the ensemble, the musical numbers, the craftsmanship Spielberg and his team bring to it, how it compares to the 1961 film, its awards season prospects, and more! We certainly have a lot of opinions to share. Interviews With "Red Rocket" Writer/Director, Sean Baker & Stars, Bree Elrod & Suzanna Son
"Red Rocket" premiered at this year's Cannes Film Festival and went on to screen at the Telluride and New York Film Festivals before opening in limited release this weekend. Writer/Director Sean Baker is following up his previous film, the acclaimed "The Florida Project," with an outrageous, vivid, and particular character study. With a career-best performance from Simon Rex, a powerhouse turn from Bree Elrod, and a star-making debut from Suzanna Son, the film has garnered similar acclaim from critics but has also drawn some controversy due to its lead character's perverted and warped mindset, the relationship he starts with an underage teenager and the film's sexual content. Sean, Bree, and Suzanna were all kind enough to spend some time talking about their work on the film, how it's been received so far, what they're planning to do next, and more. Please take a listen down below and enjoy!Check out more on NextBestPicture.comPlease subscribe on...SoundCloud - https://soundcloud.com/nextbestpicturepodcastiTunes Podcasts - https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/negs-best-film-podcast/id1087678387?mt=2Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/7IMIzpYehTqeUa1d9EC4jTAnd be sure to help support us on Patreon for as little as $1 a month at https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Learn more about your ad choices.
