"The Phantom Of The Open" tells the unlikely true story of Maurice Flitcroft, a British golfer who, with no prior experience, managed to sneak his way into the pros and received the worst score ever recorded at the Open Championship. His determination to keep on playing and improve made him an inspiring figure for many to this day. Director Craig Roberts ("Tolkien") and screenwriter Simon Farnaby ("Paddington 2") came together to tell his story, and they do it with precision, liveliness, and delight. Both of them were kind enough to spend time talking about how they came across the project, working with Mark Rylance and Sally Hawkins, what they hope audiences will take away from Maurice's story, and more. Writer and director Terence Davies' latest film "Benediction" premiered at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival, where it received strong critical praise for its screenplay depicting the life of WWI poet Siegfried Sassoon and for the leading performance by Jack Lowden, with many citing it as the best of his career. Both Terence and Jack were kind enough to spend a few minutes discussing with us what drew them toward this biopic, what they learned about Siegfried in the making of this movie, their favorite poems by him, and more.
