Episode 123: Dr. Gary Fettke

Dr. Gary Fettke is an Orthopedic Surgeon practicing in Tasmania, Australia. He has a major interest in preventative medicine and encourages his patients to lose weight before undergoing surgery.   Although his specialty is surgery, Gary believes it is much better to help people avoid surgery if at all possible, by taking preventative measures, which often involve altering the diet.   In recent years Gary has focused on the role of diet in the development of diabetes, obesity, and cancer. He has been speaking out on the combined role of sugar, fructose, refined carbohydrates, and polyunsaturated oils linking together to be behind inflammation and modern disease.   He has incurred the wrath of regulatory bodies for his stand on public health, but he and his wife, Belinda, whom we interviewed in Episode 9, remain active in defending the benefits of low carb healthy fat living. Episode 122: Lauren Anton MS, RD, CEDS-S, CPT

Lauren Anton is a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist, iaedp-approved Supervisor, and Certified Personal Trainer helping people to break free from diet culture using a weight-inclusive, non-diet approach. She has hands-on experience working with eating disorders from residential through outpatient levels of care and currently works with clients out of her Los Angeles-based private practice. She also supervises fellow dietitians. She is currently in-process for the Body Trust® Certification through Be Nourished. Lauren has spoken nationally on athletes and ED, adolescents and ED, exercise addiction/dependence, and weight stigma and has presented her own research examining the effects of intuitive eating–based nutrition education on adolescent female cross country runners. Episode 121: Dr. James Muecke

Dr. James Muecke is an ophthalmic surgeon and ophthalmologist. James has also been recognized for his work globally, particularly in Southeast Asia, and has been awarded the Australian of the Year for 2020. Dr. James Muecke AM graduated with Honours from the University of Adelaide Medical School in 1987. Following his internship, James lived and worked as a doctor in Africa and subsequently as an eye surgeon in the Middle East, battling malaria, wild animals, and rebel soldiers. He founded Sight For All in 2008, turning his boundless energy into a fight against blindness in the Aboriginal communities of Australia and some of the poorest countries of Asia and Africa. His commitment to social impact and humanitarian endeavors has earnt him several awards including an Order of Australia in 2012, the Australian Medical Association’s President’s Leadership Award in 2013, and Ernst & Young’s Social Entrepreneur for Australia in 2015. Episode 120: Calley Means

Calley Means Intro Hey everyone Clarissa Kennedy here. On todays episode of the Food Junkies Podcast we are bringing you the incredible Calley Means. We asked him here to discuss his viral Tweet stating that he “saw inside the room” of Coca-Cola’s tactics to ensure sugar-sweetened beverage taxes failed and that soda was permitted in government-funded nutrition programs. Episode 118: Dr. Tro Kalayjian

Dr. Tro is a board-certified Internal Medicine & Obesity Medicine Physician. Dr. Tro received his medical degree from Touro Medical College and completed his Internal Medicine Residency in the Yale New Haven Health System at Greenwich Hospital, serving as Chief Medical Resident during his time there.   Dr. Tro has also published research on the topics of Achalasia, Binge Eating Disorder, Food Addiction, and Severe Hypertriglyceridemia. He has worked on several clinical research projects, including a study that demonstrated the statistically significant impact of a novel hospital-based safety initiative, a systemic review comparing treatment options for neuropathic pain, a clinical trial that established a relationship between post-exercise ABI and a positive nuclear stress test.   Dr. Tro’s therapeutic focus includes diabetes, obesity, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, metabolic syndrome, and PCOS. Dr. Tro’s approach begins with intensive lifestyle changes including diet, exercise, improved sleep hygiene, as well as stress management, and mental health.   Dr. Tro has extensive training in point-of-care ultrasound. Episode 115: Dr. Claire Wilcox, MD (Part 2)

Happy Friday Food Junkies Listeners! Today I and Clarissa dive deeper into food addiction treatment with Dr. Claire Wilcox and the three of us get passionate about the topic. Dr. Wilcox, MD is a board-certified psychiatrist and addiction psychiatrist, an associate professor of translational neuroscience at the Mind Research Network and adjunct faculty at the University of New Mexico. She has worked in various clinical settings, including a medical weight loss clinic and an eating disorder treatment facility, and she completed an internal medicine residency before her psychiatry residency. She has been awarded NIH grants and published numerous academic works, some in prestigious academic journals, including a study on the relationship between dopamine function and overeating behavior, and a textbook on food addiction entitled Food Addiction, Obesity and Disorders of Overeating an Evidenced Based Assessment and Clinical Guide with Springer, the latter of which has seen over 5000 downloads since October of 2021. She has given numerous talks and training on the neurobiology of overeating in her career. She identifies herself as a writer, too. She was an associate editor of the New England Journal of Medicine Journal Watch from 2017-2020 and has written numerous educational blog posts and continuing medical education materials on a variety of medical and psychiatric topics including eating disorders, and blogs regularly on Psychology Today. She’s written for the Santa Fe Reporter, New Mexico Wilderness Alliance, Your Tango, Science in the News, and the Telluride Watch. She’s also published some personal essays under a pseudonym in literary magazines and is revising an as-yet-unpublished novel called Grit. In May of 2022, she attended the Santa Fe Science Writers Workshop and is a member of the American Medical Writer’s Association, the National Association of Science Writers, and the Food Addiction Professionals Network. Finally, she is in recovery from sugar, alcohol, and cigarette addiction.
