76. Fasting, Sleep & Diabetes in Older Women - Dr. Satchin Panda
It is a true pleasure and honor to host Dr. Satchidananda Panda aka "Satchin Panda" today to talk about circadian rhythms and fasting and how this affects women living with diabetes. But what we discuss is relevant for just about anyone, whether or not you have diabetes. We discuss the topics in his new book The Circadian Diabetes Code. Dr. Panda is a professor at The Salk Institute in California, where his lab researches circadian rhythms. His is at the forefront of research in four major areas that are relevant to healthy aging. And these can be summarized as "nurturing the circadian clock, clocking the drugs and drugging the clock". And this offers a new and really unique approach to preventing, managing and even reversing chronic diseases. Dr. Panda's groundbeaking discoveries which has made him most famous are: 1. His discovery of a blue light sensor in the retina of the eye which has led to human-centric lighting to optimize our sleep, our mood, and even our brain function. 2. He discovered that eating within an 8-12 hour window, called Time-restricted eating or intermittent fasting, can prevent or reverse chronic diseases and increase healthy lifespan. 3. He is also known for circadian genomics studies in primates, which have identified the dosing of the majority of FDA-approved drugs that can be optimized to the right time of the day to reduce the negative effects of the drugs and improve their efficacy. 4. His lab, along with several others, has demonstrated that drugs targeting circadian clock components are a multi-solving approach to treat chronic diseases, including liver disease, cancer, and the dreaded Alzheimer's disease. 74. Hack The Midlife Body Fat Switch, Uric Acid & The Truth On Fructose - Dr. Richard Johnson
This guest teaches us how to turn off our fat switch. Some of you have already read his first book, "The Fat Switch", which he published in 2012 and now our honored guest Dr. Richard Johnson has another book out called "Nature Wants Us to Be Fat: The Surprising Science Behind Why We Gain Weight and How We Can Prevent--and Reverse--It" which releases February 8th, 2022. I was blown away with his first book and am really excited to talk with him about his new book, because he has some exciting new information from his research to share with us. Dr. Richard Johnson works at the University of Colorado in Denver as a Professor of Medicine. He's been keeping super busy these last 25 years not only as a professor, but also both a practicing physician AND clinical scientist. He studies…nothing else, but our favorite drug…sugar. He is super well known in the medical circles for his research into obesity and diabetes. He found out exactly HOW sugar causes obesity and how our bodies can actually make fructose from other foods. He also found out that a by-product of fructose metabolism called uric acid plays a huge role in metabolic syndrome. The National Institute of Health has been funding his research since the 80s, so he's been doing this for…quite.. a while. He's a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and has published over, get this, 700 papers, lectured in over 45 countries, and is a highly cited scientist. Just Pubmed him. Dr. Amy Bender, holds a masters of science and PhD on Experimental Psychology and works with athletes. She's also an athlete herself. After her Ph.D., she did a Mitacs post-doctoral fellowship with the University of Calgary and Centre for Sleep and Human Performance, which is one of only a handful of places specializing in sleep with athletes. She's now the senior research scientist at Calgary Counseling Centre studying the impacts of sleep interventions and mental health. 70. Stop Night Waking, Sleep In Silence With Quieton - Janne Kyllonen
Our guest today will help you sleep better. He is passionate about getting a good night's sleep and is going to give us some great tips on how to do this. Janne Kyllonen is from Finland and knows a lot about sleep because he needed it so much while he was traveling across multiple time zones. One day while he was traveling to Beijing after an exhausting flight, he was at the airport and found a very interesting gadget. It was called Active Noise Cancelling headphones. Meet my personal anti aging doctor. I first learned about Dr. Lauren Bramley through my clients while I was living in Hong Kong in 2014. Dr. Rachel Carlton Abrams busts myths about sexuality in midlife, because, she literally wrote the book on it…and she's a doctor, so it's all certified. Dr. Rachel studied at the famous Stanford University, graduated with honors, got her doctorate from UC San Francisco and even has a Masters Degree in Holistic Health from UC Berkeley. She is Board Certified in Family Medicine and Integrative Medicine.
