Remember The Game? Retro Gaming Podcast
Adam Blank
Comedian Adam Blank hosts "Remember The Game?", a retro gaming podcast. Each week, Adam and his guest will select a video game that they grew up playing, and spend time reminiscing about what they loved (or hated) about it. Not intended to be a history lesson, "Remember The Game?" is more like a conversation you'd overhear on the playground as a kid. The discussions are all over the place, and are guaranteed to fill you with that warm, nostalgic feeling. (Or rage, like you felt with the underwater level in the original Ninja Turtles game). Either way, it's gonna be fun! New episodes every Wednesday!

Remember The Game? #238 - Wonder Boy in Monster Land

Subscriptions start at just $2/month, and 5% of our patreon income every month will be donated to our 24 hour Extra-Life charity stream at the end of the year! Patreon.com/RememberTheGame For the first time in 238 episodes, we're talking about the Sega Master System. Admittedly, I've never played one before, and even in this case, I bought a modern port of one of its games. But it's time to show the SMS some love, and I gotta say, if Wonder Boy In Monster Land is any indication of what the Master System could do, I might have to look up some more of its classics down the road. If you've never played it, Wonder Boy is a mix of Adventure Island and Zelda II, for lack of a better combo. You're traveling from area to area, buying equipment and spells and talking to townspeople looking for tips on where to go, but while you're doing that, a timer is ticking away and taking your health with it. It's tough as balls, I couldn't finish it, but I also couldn't stop playing it. I have a thing for tour retro games, and Wonder Boy scratched me right where I itched. This episode is sponsored by long-time supporter and friend of the show, Mr. McG. He swings by to explain why he has so much love for the Boy of Wonder, and then my buddy Chris, a card-carrying Sega kid, gave me a call and helped me understand why Wonder Boy was so beloved back in the day. And before we die over and over, I slap together another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'! This week, someone asks if I have any regrets about taking RTG and turning it from a hobby into a business. Why do I prefer digital games over physical? And are there any games I've kept playing, despite not loving the combat, just because the story was so good?? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 Master System Mainstays: Marble Madness, Golden Axe Warrior and Alex Kidd in Miracle World. Learn more about your ad choices. Remember The Game? #236 - DOOM 3

Subscriptions start at just $2/month, and 5% of our patreon income every month will be donated to our 24 hour Extra-Life charity stream at the end of the year! Patreon.com/RememberTheGame Doom 3 was a reimagining of the series back in 2004, but these days, it's kinda the "forgotten" Doom. People love the original Dooms, and Doom 2016 & Eternal reviewed really well (Eternal is phenomenal), but Doom 3 just gets left behind. It was a MASSIVE step forward back when it came out. The graphics were insane and it was legitimately terrifying. But it was also kinda basic, combat wise, and once the scares wore off it was a fairly standard shooter. Or at least, that's how I felt. Replaying it for the first time in almost twenty years her the past couple weeks, I feel the same way. I love the graphics, like the level design, got kinda bored of the combat, and fucking HATE the PDA system. This was one of our Stupid Sexy Sponsored episodes, so community member/hot dog Brandon is gonna pop by and tell me why he's such a Doom 3 junkie, and then I'm explain why I like this game, but don't think I can fall in love with it. And yeah, I rant about the PDAs. And before that, I slap together another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'! This week, we talk about what could be in store for the Switch as it starts to enter its home-stretch. What should you say what someone tells you that video games are a waste of time? And why don't I like Diablo?? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 additional FPSs from 2004: Half-Life 2, Metroid Prime 2, and Halo 2. You couldn't beat this game as a kid. None of us could. But I still love it. And over the pandemic, I decided I was sick of driving around that stupid city level and not being able to find Splinter. So I figured this game out once and for all. I'm rolling solo for this week's podcast, and I want to get into some of the strategies I use for TMNT, talk about the parts that still fuck me up, and explain why I think this is not only one of the best Turtles games ever, but one of the best games on the NES. And before April supports us, I slap together another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'! This week, I pick my favourite iteration of each of the four Turtles. What games on my backlog am I most looking forward to playing? And what would I rather give up: TMNT or The Simpsons? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! Remember The Game? #234 - Dick Tracy

Subscriptions start at just $2/month, and 5% of our patreon income every month will be donated to our 24 hour Extra-Life charity stream at the end of the year! Patreon.com/RememberTheGame This stupid game. If you grew up in the NES era, chances are you had at LEAST one game based on a big IP that you played over and over, even though it kinda sucked. Maybe you didn't realize it sucked, but now you know the truth. For my brother and I, Dick Tracy was one of those games. We'd rent it, and spend 2 days interrogating the wrong the people or dying on the first level, and then we'd go back to it again the next time. And the next time... Playing it now as an adult, I actually appreciate what it was trying to do. I don't know if I'd say it's "good", but I wouldn't call it "bad", either. Long-time listener Heggowaffle owned this one growing up, played it like crazy, and has enough nostalgia for it that he sponsored this episode and came by to tell me what it was like growing up chasing Prune Face (or whatever that guy's name was). And the my brother Josh give some a call to talk about driving around that stupid city, shooting rooftop snipers, looking for clues, and dying at the hands of stupid rats. Stupid Dick Tracy. And before we trace some dicks, I slap together another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'! This week, we get into the hypothetical discussion of what gaming would look like today if Nintendo and Sony had worked together in the 90's. I share some of my thoughts on the Steam Deck. And what console did I miss out on in its prime, that I wish I could go back and play more of? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 crappy NES-movie games: Friday the 13th, Jaws, and Back to the Future. Learn more about your ad choices. Remember The Game? #233 - Left 4 Dead

Subscriptions start at just $2/month, and 5% of our patreon income every month will be donated to our 24 hour Extra-Life charity stream at the end of the year! Patreon.com/RememberTheGame I don't play a lot of online shooters. I suck at them, and none of my friends were into them back in the day, so I didn't have anyone to play with anyway. But for some damned reason, Left 4 Dead just struck a cord with me. I don't know if it was the zombie thing, the co-op thing, or the catchy name thing, but I played the HELL out of these games back in the day. I started playing them again over the past few weeks to get ready for this podcast, and I can't believe how well they hold up. Left 4 Dead will never be left for dead, because players can't get enough of shooting zombies and getting puked on and all that good stuff. My buddy Tyler loves getting puked on. He also loves Left 4 Dead. And we talked about the latter love on this week's podcast. I had almost as fun fun talking about Left 4 Dead as I did playing it, and I hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed talking. And before we slay some zombies, I slap together another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'! This week, someone asks what my back-up plan was, should RTG have fallen apart in its early days. Why don't I cover more handheld games? And after my girlfriend made her podcast debut on Expansion Pass last week, is she planning to come back on the show anytime soon? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 zombie-centric games from the Left 4 Dead era: Deadrising, State of Decay, and Dead Island. Subscriptions start at just $2/month, and 5% of our patreon income every month will be donated to our 24 hour Extra-Life charity stream at the end of the year! Patreon.com/RememberTheGame AND you can find our resident artist, the talented Joe Gillespie, on Twitter & Instagram at: @Gillespiedraws Every time are talk about the GameCube on this show, I end up bringing up the four horsemen of Mario sports games. I think Mario sports, and frankly, couch multiplayer, peaked on the Nintendo GameCube. So any chance I have to blow smoke up one of those game's asses, I'm gonna start blowing. And what better way to praise a game, than to dedicate an entire episode of a crappy podcast to it?? We're talking the phenomenal Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour this week. The gameplay can be as deep, or as simple, as you want it to be. And the graphics, courses, modes, and gameplay still hold up twenty years later. RTG's resident artist, Joe Gillespie, makes his podcast debut this week, and we talked about how awesome Toadstool Tour is, despite having some bullshit holes (looking at YOU, King Bobomb). If you never played this one, you missed out. Don't let Mario Golf: Super Rush fool you, Mario Golf used to be the shit. And before we talk birdies and pipes, I slap together another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'! This week, we get into the Nintendo Switch's quest to dethrone the PlayStation 2 as the best-selling console ever, and whether or not Switch and Switch Lite sales should be combined. Where should someone that's new to the GameCube start? And y'all know I love The Simpsons, but what are my top 3 animated series of all-time? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! Patreon.com/RememberTheGame AND you can find Hawgzilla's podcast, 'Drunk Arcade', on Spotify! Instagram: @Drunk_arcade_podcast In over two hundred episodes, this might just be the weirdest game we've ever covered. But "weird" doesn't always mean "bad". I love indie games for their creativity and off-the-wall ideas, and this game plays like an indie game from 1993. And it was made by EA of all companies. It's Haunting Starring Polterguy! You control this dead punk skater looking dude, and go from house to house terrorizing a family of four. It's hilarious, weird, and I like it. RTG Supporter Hawgzilla sponsored this episode, and it was great chatting with him and finding out why he has such an odd attachment to such an odd game. And then I lay into Polterguy and explain why I think this really is a hidden gem on the Genesis, albeit maybe one without a lot of replay value. And before we scare some kids, I slap together another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'! This week, we talk about new console generations, and if console developers give up on old consoles too quickly? I find out what Polybius is (spoiler: it's terrifying). And does a Steam Deck make you a PC Master Racer?? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! Punch! It's all in the mind...including that song, that's almost 100% stuck in your head now. We're kicking the year off by talking PaRappa the Rapper! I always wanted to play this one back in the day, but it was always rented when I'd go to Blockbuster. I finally gave it a chance over the holidays, and while I'm 100% convinced it was written and designed by people on drugs, it didn't take away from the fact that it's charming, hilarious, and pretty damned fun. The guy that started this stupid show with me back in 2018, my buddy Chris, gave me a call to rap (see what I did there?) about PaRappa. He even spit some funky lyrics himself, and we had a great time talking about one of the original PlayStation's flagship titles. And before we crack crack crack the egg into the bowl, I slap together another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'! This week, someone asks if we'll ever do another guest hosted episode like the Majora's Mask show from last year. How do I decide which games I'm gonna play for the podcast out of the hundreds (literally) of suggestions I get from everyone? And what's the deal with "purple monkey dishwasher"? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 old school rhythm games: Um Jammer Lammy, Bust-A-Groove, and Space Channel 5.
