Episode 6, Season 2During this episode on the Rebel and Be Well Podcast we are honored to speak with Anders Varner, Co-Owner of Barbell Shrugged. We spoke with Anders to learn with our audience how to stop using old habits that don't serve our health, discovering greater purpose, and tuning into happiness in your present stage (and age) of life. Listen to consider resetting and recalibrating to align with the season you're finding yourself in mentally, emotionally and physically- including schedules, lifestyle, and priorities.Anders is host of the Top 10, Health and Fitness Podcast "Barbell Shrugged", and had also founded San Diego Athletics in Pacific Beach, CA before selling and investing time into Creating the R.A.P.I.D Executive Mentorship and Diesel Dad Mentorship programs. These mentorship programs implement world class protocols in functional medicine and professional coaching to help busy executives and fathers be the leaders they want to be. He has coached athletes from every major sport including the NFL, MLB, WWE, and CrossFit. An athlete himself, Anders has competed in the CrossFit regional four times, medaled at multiple Olympic Weightlifting competitions, and had the honor or being John Cena’s training partner for four years.During our interview, Anders shares both good and bad experiences from his own life, and mistake-patterns he notices in his clients. As a coach, he does a wonderful job helping us to feel more hopeful and accepting of life's changes; reflecting on our age increases, and with that the opportunity and need for new behaviors. Notably, making changes to the way we're distributing energy, resources, and choosing to care for our physical, mental, and relational health. "We need a different skillset to get through the next 10, 15, 20 years" - Anders Varner - Co-Owner - Barbell ShruggedAfter addressing the personal, we dig into Anders' experience working on the health of business professionals. He educates and coaches not only individual wellbeing but also the wellbeing of the company these individuals work for (financial success, etc.). Ask yourself: How much is my professional performance affected by my health? Regardless of our listeners' profession, Anders offers questions worth each of us asking.Next, we take a deeper dive into stress, our awareness of it, and how to find balance while living in a culture that demands "more"- without forgetting our intrinsic desires to grow. 1) Where is my attention?2) What is the intention that I'm bringing to those things?3) How does this manifest into my life?Lastly, with exceptional knowledge and perspective on lifestyle medicine, Anders shared the pros and cons to an outside-in approach vs. an inside-out approach to health:Outside In: What external things can we put onto or into our body to create a better "human package"?Inside Out: Let's seek raw data, work on our immunity and mental health, and then move onto: nutrition, movement, and other outside variables. For business leaders tuning in: How can businesses invest in their people? Leaders have heavy roles as well; where are you finding your support systems and can we identify where to begin solving the gap in our own health, and that of our company? For all other adults: What needs to be valued most now for my health? What needs to change in my life to respond to that?We invite all to tune into this episode - aging, growth, and change can be challenging; hearing from others who have found solutions could be a helpful step in a longer healthspan. Resources- Listen to the renowned Barbell Shrugged Podcast, and sign up for their varying programs, below!https://barbellshrugged.com/- Meet and learn from Anders in-person winter 2022 during The Point's February Lovework Retreat and Workshop- open to all! Trauma Informed Weight Lifting with Mariah Rooney and Mark Schneider

During this episode of the Rebel and Be Well Podcast we connect with Mariah Rooney (MSW, LICSW) and Mark Schneider- Co Founders of Trauma Informed Weight Lifting (TIWL). TIWL is a healing co-operative focused on researching the healing potential of weight lifting for trauma-impacted adolescents and adults, and training coaches and personal trainers, to take a trauma informed and healing centered approach to their work with athletes and clients. On this episode we talk invisible insults to the body, symptomatology of trauma, what's contributing to it, and how a program building strength with physical weights can bridge into the psychological. Mariah and Mark grant us insightful opportunities to utilize our gyms to heal trauma. They opened up this podcast discussion by sharing how, in lifting weights, we see a tangible example of progress; it offers us the chance to work against something- an external stress or resistance. We find control, we can manipulate it, and we can grow in more ways than physical as we notice a change."Strength is a product of trust [yourself to make an attempt, to potentially fail, to recover, those around you if you need help]" - Mark Schneider, Co-FounderChrista Rymal chose to discuss this concept much further with Mariah and Mark, especially given our relationship with Point guests who work in healthcare, and many others who were/are gravely and severely impacted by the pandemic. Topics that are becoming more relevant which we discuss on this episode:- How can we comfortably re-integrate ourselves into community- in-person with one another? It's an emotional experience, often on many levels for us to be in a physical space with others after learning to brace ourselves for safety in the midst of a pandemic.- Nervous system ad our bodies: How can we remember feeling safe around others, or how can we react and stay present with one another (co-regulate to the best of our ability) in the midst of active chaos?- What is trauma, how do I know if I have had trauma, and/or how will I know if others have experienced it themselves?- Once I can recognize the above, what can be done? When we break down a program such as theirs, we're looking at education from all angles- foundational understanding of trauma before diving into important specifics. Learners reflect not only on themselves and their explicit experiences, but also on systems, cultures, and outside forces that are causing potential traumas (or that we are possibly perpetrating ourselves). In understanding our own selves, we can also make mindful decisions and truly create a trauma- informed approach to coaching, healthcare services, or other professions. We invite all to tune into this episode as our communities are currently still in, or trying to recover from, survival mode. Whether you identify as having trauma or not, these leaders cover a culturally hot topic in a novel way that directs you to where you may begin to increase physical strength in order to develop new thought patterns, mentally."Remove the label of trauma and just look at the manifestations that it may surface...higher anxiety levels, higher depression levels, difficulty sleeping"..." you may or may not label it as trauma" - Mark Schneider, Co-Founder of TIWLResources- Get more information about Trauma Informed Weight Lifting, it's founders, and it's programs below:https://www.traumainformedweightlifting.com/- Meet and learn from Mariah and Mark in-person winter 2022 during their February workshop- open to all. Inspirational Nurse and Entrepreneur Lisseth DeGracia

Christa Rymal of The Point interviews her first (fellow) nurse, nurse educator, and nurse entrepreneur: Lisseth DeGracia. Lisseth is a Registered Nurse (RN) and has been a nurse for over 10 years with most of her career working in emergency departments and Level I trauma centers. In recent years she has also worked in a children's hospital working in vascular access, and notably, in the past year and a half, Lisseth had worked in Queens, NY working at the well known Level I trauma Center - Elmhurst - standing strong and in unity alongside other healthcare heroes on the frontlines of the pandemic. Her current full time role is within the ER unit at Northern Memorial Hospital in Minneapolis. Her list of personal hobbies and busy motherhood schedule impressed us all- especially given her newest venture to start a preventative wellness company servicing hydration IVs to patients in-home. A strong leader in her own right, this episode offers inspiration and proof that there are heroes (many undetectable by glance) still working every day to keep us safe.Sharing from her first-hand experience, having been on the 'inside', Lisseth offers heartbreaking stories as well as some lighthearted experiences that happened amidst recent medical hardships. With such heart and conviction, Lisseth also speaks to the importance of bringing "human" back into medicine.  "Human interaction is such a huge, huge thing"..."Knowing you're not alone"..."that kindness does so much [for a patient]." - Lisseth DeGracia, RNLisseth has, and still is, a soldier in the midst of a number of crises both directly and indirectly related to the pandemic. "On top of the COVID pandemic we have another pandemic and that is trauma. And that is nationwide and is worse with everything going on in the world." - Lisseth DeGracia, RNA mother since she was 18, and having been through a lot of life before that time, Lisseth has an incredible ability to give compassion, care, and to use non-invasive modes of connection, simply listening and being there, to begin healing a person in the midst of trauma. As someone who has seen some of the 'worst of the worst', Lisseth shares how she seems to stay human, and to not "shut down" or "shut off" the softer parts of herself to get by- in medicine or in life. In our opinion, she not only stays human but she allows others to feel that same peace, beautifully. In this episode:- The medical importance of bringing human interaction back into practicing medicine- Chronic and acute issues that occur as a result of vitamin and mineral deficiencies- New preventative medicine approaches that bridge modern and alternative medicine - Personal testimonial to working medical frontlines in the pandemic - Inspirational stories of Lisseth's own, and those of patientsListen in to be touched by our human connections, our strength, and to find motivation to support another- regardless of what arena it's in."Just being there for someone, understanding"..." When people end up in the ER, [consider that] nobody plans to be there. No one starts their day thinking that." - Lisseth DeGracia, RNResources- Get more information about Lisseth's Dynamic Drips (IV Hydration company), and schedule an event or at-home visit yourself:https://www.dynamicdrips.com/- Meet Lisseth at The Point's first Social Wellness Club event in Edina, MN at Basecamp Fitness - 9 AM, October 30th. Dr. Brandon BrockA rare leader in healthcare, having and applying dual licenses in Nursing (NP) as well as Chiropractic (DC). With the most impressive and extensive list of education completed by a healthcare provider that we've met, Brandon holds certifications and degrees in specialties ranging from Stem Cell Medicine to Orthopedics. Dr. Brock received the most outstanding functional neurology teacher of the year from the ACA council of Neurology four years straight and two times from IAFNR (International Association of Functional Neurology and Rehabilitation). He also received the humanitarian award from IAFNR. Dr. Brock and is also the honorable recipient of the prestigious Living Legacy Award from Samford Universities Ida Moffett School Nursing in 2015. He has also been the spotlight student at Duke University and is on the Scientific Advisory Board for the Mindd Foundation, Vibrant Labs, and Xymogen Nutrition. He also works as an educator with Functional Medicine Meetings and is own Dr. Brock LecturesIn this episode we discuss with Dr. Brandon something close to home for our podcast leaders- a mission to bridge the silos of healthcare so that patients can find health and wellbeing using whatever means best suited to him/her- not necessarily the means most familiar to a particular provider. By expanding knowledge, providers partnering across silos, and educators being open to opposing and new thoughts and ideas, there opens an opportunity for our culture to heal, and enjoy longer healthspans. With this, we also find the chance for our providers themselves to create boundaries and find respite. A necessary alternative to the over extensive demand that has been put on professionals and occurring across the healthcare industry as of late. "That's the quintessential part of 'rebel-ism'"..."we're here to allow people to have optimal health. And that's a weird concept because healthcare has been 'name a disease; treat it'. It hasn't been, 'let's make you healthy enough to either help the disease you may have, or maybe not get one at all. That is a very different way of looking at things. I'd rather treat things on the 10 yard line, and not wait until the 100 yard line." - Dr. Brandon BrockWe are excited to share knowledge today about a lesser known topic, brain health and functional neurology, that is growing rapidly due to its increased relevance given our modern lifestyles and recent social changes. Listen to this episode for insight, important reminders, and suggestions to better your brain health markers, and to redefine what you desire of your mental and overall neurological health:- Acute & Chronic Stress and The Brain- The Increase in Early Alzheimer's - Bridging Conventional and Non-Conventional Medicine - Expanding our scope of practice- Healthcare Professionals, Compassion Fatigue, and Mental Health"1 in 3 people getting Alzeimhers- many before their work life can end... my average female patient with the early onset of dementia is 52." - Dr. Brandon BrockTune in, and better understand what may play a role in brain dysfunction, 3 key ways to avoid and reverse disease, and where to begin.Resources- Get more information about Dr. Brandon Brock, become a patient, and take a course:https://drbrock.com/- Meet and learn from Dr. Brandon Brock in person at The Point this November, 2021. What is the most effective medical approach he has seen to reversing and preventing disease? Lifestyle and behavioral changes- far fewer pharmaceuticals. Beginning first and foremost, with food:  "Like most of us [The Millions of people (2/3 of Americans) who fall into the category of having struggled with their food relationship, bodyweight, metabolic health], you're not alone. He shares the curious experiences he has had to blend science with real human behavior, and where he hopes to steer healthcare in the future. An outside-the-box physician with a strong foundation and belief in bridging acute care with preventive medicine- we were excited to speak again with a leader who is expanding our healthcare options in honest, financially viable, and impactful ways.Traditionally, Dr. Jeremiah practices evidence-based medicine in one of the largest medical institutions in the state and greater county; diagnosing and treating acute and chronic disease states both in the clinic and in the hospital in conjunction with his healthcare team. Non-traditionally, Jeremiah has taken a personal interest in food, activity, sleep, rest, and connection - behavioral changes as a form of medicine. (Which is now widely feeding into a growing and successful list of patient outcomes -himself being one of those patients.) We were honored to speak with a doctor local to our own retreat center in northern Minnesota.
