[01:45] Kali Opens Up About Her Story and Finding Out About Stage 4 Cancer Owen and Kali have the same type of cancer, thymoma. Kali decided to do her own research, take control of her health, and be her advocate. Kali found out about her stage 4 cancer two months after having a baby. It all started during Covid; Kali had chest pain and difficulty breathing. After going to the emergency room, the doctors found a tumor the size of an orange. The tumor had ruptured, causing immense pain. Eventually, Kali had her diaphragm removed and replaced with mesh. Plus, the doctors stripped her pleural lining and took a little bit of her right lung. [14:30] Owen Speaks About His Story and Also Getting Diagnosed With Stage 4 Cancer Owen had a grapefruit-sized tumor in his chest. He had surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Later, Owen shrunk his tumor 30% by fasting and eating a plant-based keto diet. Through lifestyle changes, Owen was in a therapeutic process, changing his body’s chemistry to eat cancer while awake and thriving. Eventually, Owen was diagnosed with stage four cancer. The doctors told Owen that there was no hope; every single scan got worse. Owen was told he would only live two to five more years. [27:00] Surround Yourself With Survivors and People Who Believe In Your Recovery Is your goal to use the doctor’s medicine, or is your goal to overcome your disease? Owen’s doctors told them there was no chance. So, why would he do what the doctors told him to do? Instead, Owen wanted to follow people who believed he could overcome his diagnosis. Instead, you should find a community of survivors, not statistics from doctors. When you surround yourself with survivors, you will be in a healthier place. Something that Owen learned is that different cancers react to proteins differently. [36:15] Be Careful With CT Scans - They Will Increase Your Secondary Risks Getting two and a half CT scans per year dramatically increases your chance of secondary cancers. Owen brought this up to his doctor; she said he wouldn’t live that long anyway. When you test fasting and keto, you have to get a scan and see what it did; you have to be strategic. Remember, whenever you get a scan, you are increasing secondary risks. Owen says that you should get an MRI; that way, you don’t get any radiation. When you fast, you’ll be in deep autophagy. [43:00] The Journey To Metabolic Flexibility Will Be Challenging - Remember Your ‘Why’ Kali is metabolically flexible. Metabolic flexibility is complex, and it is not an easy path to navigate. Movie companies need their starlets to look a certain way. Vinnie would receive the call to get people into shape in three weeks. You can’t run off fourteen months of bad behavior. Instead, weight loss is all about diet. Vinnie knew that meat is a great way to lose weight, decrease inflammation, and feel better overall. Plus, meat is heart-healthy. Vinnie wrote the book Fitness Confidential; he didn’t want to put the word ketosis in the book. He knew the medical community would say he was trying to kill people.
[06:45] Why Vinnie Never Used The Word “Keto” In 2013, Vinnie heard about net carbs. It doesn’t work! If it worked, Vinnie would tell people to do it. Vinnie gives away his information for free – he has never charged for his information. So, why would he lie to anyone? Vinnie owns the rights to NSNG (no sugars, no grains). No one is certifying the word “keto.” You can take a bowl of sugar, wrap it up, and say it’s keto-certified. In reality, it’s not keto-certified because it’s not good for you. [12:15] Why Insulin Is Important If insulin is so bad, then why do people need it to live? Insulin is a hormone that we need to live. All hormones control mechanisms in our bodies. Insulin does a lot of things. It gets released to go down and cover sugar in our liver. When you eat a piece of fruit, the sugar gets to your liver. Then, the insulin will convert sugar into glucose and stores it around your body. In order to maintain homeostasis, we only have a couple of teaspoons in our blood. Sugar can’t go anywhere. So, our body will store it as fat though long-chain triglycerides. The long-chain triglycerides take a lot of work to break it down. When we eat too many carbs, you are getting an insulin load. It makes us insulin resistant. Then, we can end up type 2 diabetes. The key is to eat foods that are insulin friendly. [18:25] Can Fat Make You Fat? Yes, fat can you make you fat if you eat it in excess. However, fats aren’t going to make you eat in excess. For example, you can eat a whole bag of corn chips. Once you start eating them, you can’t stop. People who are obese can’t stop eating corn chips. While on the other hand, if you went to steakhouse, and you had a giant fatty steak. When you take the last bite and they bring you a second steak, you would bag it up and take it home. Why is that? With the Doritos, the hormones are pouring out. With the meat, you feel satiated. You are going to feel full on fatty things vs. carbs. [27:50] Drinking Too Much Heavy Cream Vinnie tells a story about one of his clients, Gabriella, who stopped losing weight. She had another thirty pounds to go. Gabriella would drink coffee with heavy cream in the morning and eggs. She explains the rest of her diet and it was all perfect. However, Gabriella was actually drinking 18 oz of heavy cream every morning. Even when you have too much fat, you may not get fat. However, it may prevent you from losing weight. [31:55] What’s Wrong With Calories In and Calories Out Exercise more and eat less. That’s challenging to do, and it doesn’t even work! Thirty minutes on treadmill, you might not even burn a bag of M&M’s. You can’t run off a bag of M&M’s. How are you going to burn off snacks and alcohol? If you run a car out of gas, you can’t expect it to keep running. You can’t run your body out of energy and think it’s going to keep running. Athletes can bonk in the middle of a race. So, how do you get your body fat-adapted? Once your body learns how to use fat as energy, it will do it right away. [37:50] The Inspiration behind FAT: A Documentary Vinnie has been doing a podcast for nine years about low carb. Everyone told Vinnie that he needs a movie. However, he didn’t have the money to make it. So, Vinnie did crowdfunding for the movie. He got over $260,000 to make the movie. On day two of FAT: A Documentary on iTunes, they were soaring up the charts. The next day, FAT: A Documentary was number one on iTunes. When they filmed the first movie, there was too much footage. [01:00] How Morley Became Obsessed with Copper in the Mitochondria Morley was born into a very sickly family with many illnesses. After doing medical research, Morley found that in the world of science, they separated copper from iron metabolism. In traditional Chinese medicine, copper is the general, and iron is the foot soldier. When the general is not around, foot soldiers go crazy. This is exactly what happens inside our bodies. [06:10] What You Need To Know About Mitochondria In The Human Body We've been trained to think of the mitochondria as an energy furnace. People think that the mitochondria just put out energy. There are 40 quadrillion mitochondria in our body. The average cell has about 500 mitochondria. The average liver cell has 2,000, kidney cells have 4,000, heart cells have 10,000, and a mature egg in a woman's body has 600,000 mitochondria. The cells that are primarily relied upon for survival have the most mitochondria. Morley likes to say, “ignore the enemies; ignite the energy.” Morley has learned that if you don't have copper in your diet and don't have retinol to make copper bioavailable, you're not getting excellent mitochondria function. If mitochondria cannot produce energy, they cannot recycle iron. [21:30] Ferritin In The Body and The Reason You Need Copper To Stay Healthy There are four different forms of ferritin in the body. There are two principal flavors: heavy chain and light chain. Whenever you see the phrase heavy chain, it means copper is involved. The light chain is expressed most extensively in the liver. The heavy chain is expressed chiefly in the heart. There is also serum ferritin. Many people believe that ferritin in the blood accurately reflects what's happening inside cells. However, when you get serum ferritin high, you toxify the liver. When you suppress copper in an animal's diet, iron will rip up in the liver. [32:20] We Need To Make 2.5 Million Red Blood Cells Every Single Second 70% of the iron in the body is in hemoglobin. There's a recycling system for iron called the reticular endothelial system. Every second of every day, we need to make 2.5 million red blood cells. In 24 hours, we make 2 trillion red blood cells. It only takes 24 milligrams of iron to support that level of production. [39:50] The Reason You Need More Cooper on A Ketogenic Diet if you ferment sugar without oxygen, you get two units of energy. If you oxidize the sugar, you're going to get around 34. If you oxidize fat, you’ll get 140 units of energy. 90% of the energy comes out of the mitochondria. It does not take a lot of copper to run our body; copper creates energy. If you're going to have a keto diet, you better have a healthy supply of copper. The metabolism of fats is copper-dependent. You cannot digest copper in your diet if you don't have fat in your diet. [48:10] Ascorbic Acid Is Destroying The Bioavailability of Copper Ascorbic acid is not the whole food vitamin C complex. Ascorbic acid is a prooxidant, whereas vitamin C molecule complex is an antioxidant. Ascorbic acid blocks the absorption of copper. You need to know that ascorbic acid, vitamin D, and zinc destroy the bioavailability of copper. When you destroy the bioavailability of copper, iron rises in the tissue. [57:40] How You Can Get More Copper Into Your Body Through Diet We need to lower the iron footprint in our bodies and increase the copper footprint. You need a mineral base in your water and in your foods. Also, eat more real food that is organically grown. Plus, more fat will be essential. Get more cooper from bee pollen, real vitamin C, and grass-fed beef liver. There is much more beta carotene in the grass than in oranges and carrots. Later, Kevin ended up getting diagnosed with osteoporosis in his early 30s. Kevin was devastated about his diagnosis. At the time, Kevin had gut health issues, poor energy, wasn’t sleeping well, and had high stress. So, Kevin knew he had to address everything to fix his health. Finally, Kevin got the right plan for his health and bones. [06:10] The Answer To Your Health Problems Won’t Come From The Pharmacy Kevin always thought that the answer to his health problems would come from a pharmacy or a doctor. Throughout his life, Kevin took sleeping pills, antidepressants, antibiotics, and countless other medications to help address the signs and symptoms of his condition. However, he never really received a complete resolution of those issues because he was just covering up the cause. Kevin just wanted to divest himself from thinking that the solution to his health was in a pill. [09:20] The Importance of Gut Health For Your Overall Health Your body and your bones are like plants. To grow, they need nutrients and the right conditions. Most people focus on nutrients like salads and smoothies. They’re not considering the soil. Our gut is like the soil; it is where we absorb almost everything. To absorb anything, you need roots in your soil. Our roots are called villi. They're these tiny little hairlike projections that cover our small intestine. The villi will shuttle nutrients into your bloodstream so they can travel where they are needed in your body. When you have poor digestion, you won’t be able to break down food properly. [13:45] Gut Health: Testing Your Stomach Acid and Other Options First, figure out where your stomach acid is; there are a few different tests that you can do. If you have low stomach acid, you can supplement with betaine HCl. You could also use some digestive enzymes to help break down your food. You need a digestive stool test to understand what is going on inside your microbiome. Then, you will work with a practitioner to build a protocol. [15:50] Do I Have To Stop Drinking Coffee If I Have Gut Issues? Do I have to stop drinking coffee? The answer is no. The big concern is caffeine when it comes to coffee. Caffeine is going to vary slightly to increase calcium excretion. Most people don’t need to avoid coffee. Instead, drink less. If you've got caffeine intakes greater than 300 milligrams a day, calcium excreted in the urine will increase. [17:30] When Should I Get My First Bone Density Scan? The earlier, the better when it comes to getting your first bone density scan. Around 30 or 40 would be an excellent time to get your first scan. Get a scan now so you can understand where you are at. Maybe you will find out something that you can start addressing now. You can build bone strength at any age. It just gets more challenging as you get older. [22:30] Finding A Functional Medicine Practitioner For Postmenopausal Women Primary osteoporosis is typically related to the decrease in estrogen in postmenopausal women. When estrogen levels decrease as they do during menopause, it's going to cause an increase in the activity level of cells that break down bone. You need to have conversations with a functional medicine practitioner or a naturopathic physician to determine if hormones will be right for you. Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy could be the right choice. [28:00] Spinach and Kale Could Be Causing Digestive Problems Oxalates are an antinutrient. Antinutrients can cause problems for people who have digestive issues. People eat a lot of spinach. If you can’t break down the oxalates, you will have some issues. Instead, you should eat arugula; it is super low in oxalates. [30:10] Why Kevin Is A Massive Fan of Coconut Oil Coconut oil is good for energy, weight, brain function, heart health, memory, skin, hair, and teeth. Coconut oil can be helpful in the protection against bone loss. Plus, it’s great because it is full of MCT; they go straight to the liver. Lastly, coconut oil has antimicrobial effects. Cycling women are prone to insulin resistance or have insulin resistance. Eating less often really can be nicely aligned with a women's menstrual cycle. The first two weeks of the menstrual cycle can be a time where a woman pushes their workouts. Along with that, you can push the fasting window. As you make the transition into the second half of your menstrual cycle, this is the time to do yoga, connect with nature, and do less intense forms of exercise. This is not the time to do an extended fast. Once you start bleeding, you can go back to your regular schedule. During menopause, if women dial in on the lifestyle choices, they have tremendous success. The Mistakes You Are Making With Fasting The first mistake people make is not getting enough sleep. If you are not sleeping throughout the night, then do not start fasting. Instead, you need to figure out why you are not sleeping. Next, you are being too restrictive with your fasts. We need to hit our proteins, fats, and non-starchy carbohydrates. However, many people are too rigid. It would help if you believed in the value of a refeeding day. Depending on where you are in your menstrual cycle, maybe it's time to add some root vegetables or squash. Cynthia broke her fast early today because she did a heavy lift day. Lean into what your body is telling you! Lastly, many people are exercising too much. Cynthia says you need to exercise smarter, not harder. She has done over 70,000 kilometers around the earth. Lisa wasn’t built to run; instead, she decided she wanted to become a runner. In the beginning, Lisa suffered. However, she got good enough to overcome the adversity. [07:15] Lisa Was In An Abusive Relationship and Discovered Ultramarathon Running Lisa was in an abusive relationship in her 20s. Her relationship had a massive impact on her. Lisa felt hopeless because she was constantly being verbally abused. Eventually, Lisa recovered from her relationship and got into ultramarathon running. The comradeship, friendship, and positivity kept her coming back to ultramarathons. [18:10] What To Do If You’re Going Through A Traumatic Situation You need to take control of some aspect of the crisis you're going through. The amygdala is a very primitive part of the brain that does this fight or flight response. Your amygdala will takeover during something traumatic. So, you need to get control of your breath. The exhale will be critical; the exhale tells your body that it is not in danger. In fight or flight, your prefrontal cortex turns off. Next, look at what you can control. [23:35] Relentless: How A Mother and Daughter Defied The Odds Six years ago, Lisa’s mom had a massive aneurysm. When they got to the doctor, they said she only had a migraine. After six hours, Lisa’s mom got a CT scan; they found out a massive vessel had burst. At that moment, they didn’t think she would survive. An air ambulance took twelve hours to arrive. To stay calm, Lisa figured out what she could be in control of during this situation. Lisa’s mom was in and out of a coma for three weeks. Eventually, she stabilized, and she survived. The book Relentless is a mindset book; it’s the mindset that it takes to overcome massive obstacles. The book can be applied in any situation. [00:35] Why Dr. Sideroff Decided To Dedicate His Life To Resilience Dr. Sideroff has always been interested in studying the brain mechanisms of learning and memory. He was interested in finding the brain's connections, so he started a career as a brain researcher. Eventually, he started doing stress management workshops for organizations and corporations. After the workshops, people felt inspired to make changes in their lives. A few months later, very few people actually followed through with those changes. Down the road, Dr. Sideroff began to identify why we have great resistance to managing our stress. [05:45] Keeping The Nervous System In A Good Place Through Resilience When we think about resilience, we think about the ability to bounce back and recover after a stressful event. If you view the world as dangerous, you expect a problem to arise. When you anticipate danger, your body mobilizes for that danger. If you're continually activating your nervous system in preparation for danger, you're not allowing your body to recover fully. The ability to bounce back is part of resilience. [09:40] How The Environment of Our Childhood Will Affect Our Resilience Primitive Gestalt patterns are how our brain develops throughout childhood based on the lessons of our childhood environment. Our brain literally forms its circuitry based on those childhood lessons. We adapt to our childhood environment. Then our adaptation gets locked in. If our childhood was dangerous, we as adults continue to think the world is just as dangerous. Resilience is about being able to think outside the box and adapt to our current environment. Many of the consequences of our childhood are not something that we're always conscious about. [14:50] Unpacking The Unconscious To Live A Happier Life The first step in unpacking the unconscious is a willingness to face complicated feelings, emotions, and issues. Next, you have to be accepting of whatever emotions you have. You can love your mother and father yet still be angry at them. Living a happier and healthier life is about a willingness to grow up. [20:50] The First Three Pillars From The Path: Mastering the Nine Pillars of Resilience and Success What is the most crucial relationship that you have? It’s the relationship with yourself. Consider these questions: Are you critical and judgmental of yourself? Do you put yourself down? Are you loving, accepting, and compassionate toward yourself? The first pillar is all about how you treat yourself and then comparing that to the healthy or ideal way of treating yourself. You can do this by becoming consciously aware of your thoughts. The second pillar is your relationship with others. Are you able to tell the difference between healthy and toxic relationships? The third pillar is a relationship with something more significant; this extends to the community at large. [33:40] Autonomic Dysregulation Syndrome and The Process of Aging Dr. Sideroff has proposed an actual diagnostic code which he calls autonomic dysregulation syndrome. 70 to 80% of visits to the doctor's office result from this autonomic dysregulation syndrome. It underlies whether you have headaches, high blood pressure, or autoimmune disease. We now have direct evidence that stress speeds up the aging process. All illness is simply an expression of the aging process. Luckily, resilience is one way of slowing down the aging process. However, when mTOR is turned on all the time, now we end up with too much inflammation. Autophagy will help you find balance because it suppresses mTOR. What Happens When Our Body Gets Rid of A Cell? When your body gets rid of a cell, it will replace it. It creates new young embryonic cells with more stress resiliency and stronger mitochondria. When we have these senescence cells that are continuing to divide, they create more copies of badly damaged cells. So instead, we want to get rid of those, or we want to repair them before they become a zombie cell. If they've already become zombies, we get rid of them and replace them with these young embryonic stem cells.
