484: Dr. Alexandra Owensby: Single Mom Running For Congress

Dr. Alexandra Owensby is running for the Congressional seat in Kentucky's 4th district. In addition to that, she's working at her local hospital during the pandemic. After leaving an abusive marriage, Dr. Owensby put herself through nursing school as a full-time single mother of two, utilizing student loans. While working the night shift to make childcare more affordable, she was able to minimize time away from her children. After graduating and earning her RN S\status, Alexandra obtained a position as an ICU nurse. Though still struggling to make ends meet with a salary below $40,000.00 annually, she was able to make it with assistance from the Children’s Health Insurance Program, due to their zero-dollar co-pays for medicine, dental care, and clinic visits. Dr. Owensby believes strongly that this type of Healthcare is what all American families deserve access to. Alexandra’s journey through hardship and the American education system has inspired her to run for Congress as Kentucky’s 4th District Representative. She is not a politician born into money, nor is she a millionaire business owner looking to boost her image. Dr. Alexandra Owensby’s story is the spark that moves an average American citizen to ask for the opportunity to lead in a city where most do not. Listen in to hear Alexandra share: What inspired her to get involved in politics after being in the medical field The unexpected gifts of running for political office (and why you should do it) How moms are always dropping multiple balls and why it’s totally ok Why being a single mom who put herself through school to get multiple degrees makes her uniquely qualified to be a congresswoman How you can coach your kids to be more resilient during COVID Links mentioned:Connect with and learn more about Alexandra: Alexandra Owensby Thank you to our sponsor: Best Fiends: Download FREE on the Apple App Store or Google Play.  Learn more about your ad choices. 483: Be Bold & Brave In Order To BUILD

I have to tell you something scary... In September 2020, 865,000 women left the work force.  In September 2020, 216,000 men left the work force. When women are leaving the work force at 4 times the rate of men, big things are bound to happen.   There will be fewer women in corporate leadership. There will be fewer female voices at board room tables and around any meeting tables. There will be fewer women to advocate for women's rights in the office. There will be fewer women to point out inequities across the board in corporate culture.   Let's be honest, the inequities work in men's favor, so it's unlikely they will highlight them and change them with fewer women at the office. I'm afraid it will be quite the opposite.   While this is scary - really scary - I also have a lot of hope.  Because I know that many of the women who walked away from traditional/corporate jobs in September are not ready to walk away from their power & purpose. They are just shifting it.   I predict a massive shift in the way women lead over the next few years. Instead of trying to hold space in someone else's company and live by someone else's rules that just don't fly if you're homeschooling/distance learning in a pandemic, we will see women build their own companies.   I am SO HERE FOR THIS.   Let's BUILD THOSE COMPANIES.  Listen in for inspiration to get bold & brave in order to BUILD. Links mentioned:Join my final (free) workshop of 2020, Tenacious Mamas Business & Leadership Workshop: shamelessmom.com/tenacious Learn more about your ad choices. 481: 3 Ways To Be A Better Critical Thinker

I don’t need to tell you there is a lot of noise right now.So. Much. Noise.I want to encourage you (while I’m also encouraging myself, lol) to step back from the noise to become a better critical thinker. It’s easy to let the high emotions of this election season (and the pandemic and the cultural revolution) cause us to react in knee jerk ways. But that is not effective or productive. Instead of knee jerk reactions, the best gift we can give ourselves and those who might benefit from the value of our voice, is to LISTEN. Rather than adding to the noise, listen for a moment before you speak. And then, when you do speak, speak in a way that creates space for others to listen and be in conversation with you. Speak with well formulated thoughts that can actually have impact. Speak with your authentic voice that will allow others to learn and grow with you.And after you speak, sit back and restore your head and your heart in order to get back to listening. Listen in to hear me walk you through this 3 part process LISTEN-SPEAK-RESTORE to see how you can escape the noise, add value to the conversations that matter, and sustain this climate that is bound to remain heavy and heated for quite some time.Your voice has value. Become a better critical thinker to use it to the very best of your ability.Links mentioned: Join my Tenacious Mamas Business & Leadership Workshop Podcast: First Name Basis    Learn more about your ad choices. 479: How RBG Will Live On In Us

I found myself gutted the moment I heard.I felt a familiar sinking feeling wash over my entire body. It was the same feeling I had on that fateful day after the election in November of 2016.I texted a girlfriend: Omg. RBG.She replied: I kind of feel like the world is ending.I felt the same. A few minutes later, I saw this RBG quote on social media, "I would like to be remembered as someone who used whatever talent she had to do her work to the very best of her ability." I texted this quote to my friend and said: This is giving me solace. I feel like we are doing this. She replied: That is true and a good reminder.I've spent the last week reflecting on the gifts RBG gave us. Here are 3 lessons she taught us that will serve as my inspiration to keep working to the best of my ability #everydamnday. I am sharing them with you in hopes they will inspire your life and your legacy, as well. Speak up loud and proud - even when (especially when) you have an unpopular opinion. Trust that your voice has value. Be persistent. We have a massive responsibility to SHOW UP right now. We need to show up for this election season like we have never shown up before. Black lives, women’s rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and the health of our planet are all in imminent danger right now. The loss of RBG and the implications on the Supreme Court and the future of our country are monumental, to say the least.Listen in to get inspired and fired up to SHOW UP and SHINE for the next 6 weeks. Links mentioned:Join my FREE Tenacious Mamas Business & Leadership Workshop   Learn more about your ad choices.
