Catching Foxes
Luke and Gomer
Luke and Gomer became friends Freshman year at the Franciscan University of Steubenville and 14 years later they started a podcast. The show oscillates between a conversation between just the two of us and interviews that we do together of other, fancier people. Sometimes we get explicit either by being too honest or by being too stupid. Either way, it's fun!

The Catholic Convocation, Barron, and the Catching Foxes Hello
Luke, representing 500,000 Catholics, attended the convocation and he represented Catching Foxes well. We explore the suckiness of treating the crisis in the Church as a sociology/statistics problem, the lack of God, when God showed up in the preaching of Sister Miriam, SOLT, and Gomer shares a prison ministry heartbreak. Episode 96: Danielle Noonan and P Diddy?!
We invited our friend, Danielle Noonan, to talk about her love of music, what it means to be adopted, to be a childhood victim of abuse, and how cheap consolation really, really pisses her off. Danielle has been producing music, first in ministry with my old parish in Sugar Land, Texas, and now as a recording artist who travels to Nashville regularly and has "people".Sponsored By:LumiBox: Visit Lumibox.co/catchingfoxes to support us and get something beautiful delivered to your door every month. Episode 94: Gomer Starts Greasing!
There are few things more annoying to than people who seem to peddle inspiration. You find them on Facebook encouraging you to follow your dreams, chase the rainbow, and change your life. The reason, I've found, why these people are so damned bent on inspiration is because they have discovered this wonderful thing called "energy" that I lacked because I'm a damned couch potato. Well, for the last two weeks, I've greased the groove to break myself of this addiction to crappy foods and sitting, replacing inaction with Prayer, Study, and Exercise. And, honestly, it's freaking sweet.Sponsored By:LumiBox: Visit Lumibox.co/catchingfoxes to support us and get something beautiful delivered to your door every month. You might not have thought of strength as something to be practiced, but you ought to. According to Pavel Tsatsouline, former Soviet Special Forces instructor and the father of the kettlebell in the West, “Strength is a skill.” And like any skill, it’s one you’ve got to consistently work at.
One of the ways to build the skill of strength is by what Pavel calls “greasing the groove.” What exactly greasing the groove means, and how you can use this exercise method to build strength is what we’ll explain today.

Episode 93: You Have to Class Up
We talk about work-as-email and Gomer's conflict with research reading. Youth Ministry, and the parish's constant tendency to segregate family, especially by age. We talk about the Art of Life and morality as taught by the Church. This leads us back to the community problem, but focusing on the demise of "The Lodge" and the American Legion type places. Then we talk about The Great Casualization (see show notes), Wonder Woman, The Marvel Cinematic Universe, and how Gomer is still scared to work out with Luke.Sponsored By:LumiBox: Visit Lumibox.co/catchingfoxes to support us and get something beautiful delivered to your door every month. Promo Code: catchingfoxesSupport Catching FoxesLinks:Dress Up by G. Bruce Boyer | Articles | First Things — While not putting an emphasis on dress itself, most commentators who have discussed the relationship between the public and private person have made reference to both dress and manners when discussing the abandonment of the formal public self. And perhaps nowhere can the loss of public self be so readily seen as in the clothes we wear. One commentator remarked, “A ‘gentleman’ no longer tipped his symbolic hat to a ‘lady’ to show the conventional respect due her sex; he no longer had a hat to tip.” And no one doubts that the hat is gone, as well as the suit, the tie, and the polished leather oxford. The word I’m searching for is casualization. ''The Avengers'' and Friedrich Nietzsche | Word On Fire — The Avengers is chock-a-block with Ubermenschen, powerful, willful people who assert themselves through technology and the hyper-violence that that technology makes possible. And the most remarkable instance of this technologically informed self-assertion is the creation of the savior figure, who self-identifies with the very words of Yahweh in the book of Exodus. But he is not the Word become flesh; instead, he is the coming together of flesh and robotics, produced by the flexing of the all too human will to power. I find it fascinating that this pseudo-savior was brought about by players on both sides of the divide, by both Iron Man and Ultron. The Power in a Pause – How Fr. Robert Barron (Not Joss Whedon) Made the Vision into an Atheist. | Haunted by Humans — It is Ultron, not the Vision, that teaches us about nihilism. And guess what? He’s the bad guy. The only way for there to be peace is human extinction. Its Ultron who thinks he’s beyond good and evil, not the Vision. Where the Vision pauses to discover what is truly good -existence, friendship, kindness- Ultron acts without thought. Ultron declares himself the messiah. “I’m going to save the world,” he says. He’s a machine, utterly focused on his programming. Upon a rock of destruction will he build his church of death. Father Barron thinks that the Vision is presented as the herald of Nietzsche, that Joss Whedon is covertly trying to turn us into nihilists. Ultron is the herald here, and he sows and reaps destruction. He also loses in the end, and I’ve yet to see a scenario where losing attracts people to a cause.

Episode 92: Manhood and Music with Ben Walther
Ben Walther is a legend in our Household, AMDG. Ben is a man's man who is insanely positive and deeply prayerful. We had a great conversation about what it means to be a man, initiation rites and our lack thereof, dadlessness and the Father, and then we take a hard right turn into music. Luke brings up his new fave that he found out is both Christian and Queer and what that means. We end with me yelling at Ben to build something great online.Sponsored By:LumiBox: Visit Lumibox.co/catchingfoxes to support us and get something beautiful delivered to your door every month. And every little has dreams, big dreams, dreams of being the hero, of beating the bad guys, of doing daring feats and rescuing the damsel in distress. Every little girl has dreams, too: of being rescued by her prince and swept up into a great adventure, knowing that she is the beauty.
But what happens to those dreams when we grow up? Walk into most churches, have a look around, and ask yourself: What is a Christian man? Without listening to what is said, look at what you find there. Most Christian men are . . . bored. John Eldredge revises and updates his best-selling, renowned Christian classic, Wild at Heart, and in it invites men to recover their masculine heart, defined in the image of a passionate God. And he invites women to discover the secret of a man’s soul and to delight in the strength and wildness men were created to offer.Book | Iron John — In this timeless and deeply learned classic, poet and translator Robert Bly offers nothing less than a new vision of what it means to be a man. Bly's vision is based on his ongoing work with men, as well as on reflections on his own life. He addresses the devastating effects of remote fathers and mourns the disappearance of male initiation rites in our culture. Finding rich meaning in ancient stories and legends, Bly uses the Grimm fairy tale "Iron John"—in which a mentor or "Wild Man" guides a young man through eight stages of male growth—to remind us of ways of knowing long forgotten, images of deep and vigorous masculinity centered in feeling and protective of the young.
At once down-to-earth and elevated, combining the grandeur of myth with the practical and often painful lessons of our own histories, Iron John is an astonishing work that will continue to guide and inspire men—and women—for years to come.Book | No More Mr Nice Guy — Dr. Robert Glover has dubbed the "Nice Guy Syndrome" trying too hard to please others while neglecting one's own needs, thus causing unhappiness and resentfulness. It's no wonder that unfulfilled Nice Guys lash out in frustration at their loved ones, claims Dr. Glover. He explains how they can stop seeking approval and start getting what they want in life, by presenting the information and tools to help them ensure their needs are met, to express their emotions, to have a satisfying sex life, to embrace their masculinity and form meaningful relationships with other men, and to live up to their creative potential. The Art of Manliness — Welcome to The Art of Manliness — a blog dedicated to uncovering the lost art of being a man. The historian and sociologist Lewis Mumford said, “Every generation revolts against its fathers and makes friends with its grandfathers.” AoM is a blog about growing up well, aimed at men and their unique challenges and interests. We seek to uncover how to live with grandpa’s swagger, virtue, and know-how in the present age by wedding the best of the past to the best of the present. The end goal is to create a synergy of tradition and modernity that offers men a way forward and signposts on how to live an excellent, flourishing life. Gomer Fails at Sex...again.
10 Minute Topics! We call it 10-minute topics, but we rarely stay within the 10-minute limit. I start off talking about my beautiful daughter who has a huge anxiety issue at the age of 5 and how I have no idea how to deal with it. Second, we thank the XLT Atlanta folks for an amazing time. Then we talk about Catholic Schools and their struggle with discipleship, finances, and Catholic identity. Next, I bring up the topic of sex, especially how much work it is to do it right. Seriously, people, it is exhausting sometimes. We also bring up the shenanigans at UST, gay vs. Same-sex attraction labels, and more!Sponsored By:LumiBox: Visit Lumibox.co/catchingfoxes to support us and get something beautiful delivered to your door every month. The greatest challenge to Catholic education in the United States today...is to restore to that culture the conviction that human beings can grasp the truth of things, and in grasping that truth can know their duties to God, to themselves and their neighbors.
TRUE DISCIPLES
The mission of the Catholic school is the integral formation of students, so that they may be true to their condition as Christ's disciples and as such work effectively for the evangelization of culture and for the common good of society.

the pressing challenge of clearly identifying the aims of Catholic education, and applying proper methods in Catholic elementary and secondary education. . . .
