From Inner City Charter Schools to Homeschooling

Temporary Co-Host, Brian Jones, returns to NOT talk about the liturgy. Instead, we discuss his time in a Cleveland inner-city charter school as a teacher and compare/contrast institutional schooling (public, charter, private, parochial) with homeschooling (hybrid, classical, and Robinson Curriculum). We also talk about the stupid "super Catholic" pressures we put on each other when it comes to schooling, number of kids, age of marriage, etc. Sponsored By:Credit Karma: Ready to find the card for you? Atonement Theology NERDFEST with John DeRosa of the Classical Theism Podcast

(originally aired 08/2021, "What do Catholics Say about the Atonement?" on the Classical Theism Podcast) John is a fantastic man. He's a high school math teacher at a public school and defends 2,000 years of the Catholic Intellectual Tradition on the side. He really does love the God of classical theism. This was initially aired on his great podcast: Classic Theism Podcast, episode 160. Here's his show notes about the episode: What do Catholics believe about the atonement? Why does it matter that some guy died 2000 years ago? How can we distinguish Catholic views from Reformed protestant views of the atonement? How might we understand Leviticus 16, Isaiah 53, 2 Corinthians 5:21, Romans 8:3, and 1 Peter 2:24 in light of the Catholic view? Michael Gormley joins us to tackle these issues head-on.Sponsored By:BetterHelp.com: Give it a try and see why over 2 million people have used BetterHelp online therapy. Done with Liturgy Wars, with Brian Jones

We discuss the liturgy wars from a different framework. Not the annoying "This is more/less reverent" but rather, what are the context and conditions of our current situation that produces malformed Catholics? Why do Catholic lose their minds over the removal of silly nonessentials that get added into the liturgy where they should not be? Formation and Culture matters. It is here that the greatest newness is going to be noticed, the newness of language. No longer Latin, but the spoken language will be the principal language of the Mass. The introduction of the vernacular will certainly be a great sacrifice for those who know the beauty, the power and the expressive sacrality of Latin. Frat boy, Seminarian, Husband, Veteran, Lawyer, Father of 11, Chris Miller

This guy. We start with a bloody crucifix in my parent's house in 6th grade and then the OSU frat life, to seminary, to engagement with his now-wife, to the military, to law school, to an oil company to 11 kids and counting. We discuss his St Paul-like conversion within Catholicism, his annoyance with Traditional Latin Mass communities as a grown-ass man, dealing with Pope Francis's comments that cut him deep, his experience of Iraq during wartime, and keeping his faith alive all along the way. Finally, we talk about things like what it's like having 11 kids today and how he deals with stupid comments. In this age of deracination, it is no wonder that new generations are returning to tradition, rediscovering its forgotten heritage, both in the Church and in the world. But whenever the Spirit guides men to Truth, the Devil will strive to pervert their good intentions. As Catholics, we hold fast to all that is good in the movement for the restoration of lost traditions and oppose all appearances of evil. It has become evident that the Devil’s tool to ruin the traditionalism of the 21st century is the spirit of the Pharisees, who opposed the renewal of the Spirit and the Good News of Our Lord Jesus Christ. We reject the white-washed tombs of this dead traditionalism.

The Batman (Catching Foxes Ruins the Movies)

Spoiler review. Don't plan on watching the movie? Then you will still love this episode as we discuss the bigger themes, film, and the hero's journey. This review contains spoilers. The spoiler horn is sounded at the very beginning. If you have no interest in this movie, I think you will still get something out of this, especially the art of film and how Grunge still owns us in our late 30s and 40s. Now if you will excuse me, I have to plop in all of the ads and record a new one because Luke got sick and his voice is shot. Luke's Show Notes Matt Reeves Background Older Gen X Childhood friend on JJ Abrhams Cloverfield director Why ‘Something in the Way’ as the main thematic music? Bridge, Kurt Cobain “When I write, I listen to music, and as I was writing the first act, I put on Nirvana’s ‘Something In The Way,'” Reeves, 55, told Empire. “That’s when it came to me that, rather than make Bruce Wayne the playboy version we’ve seen before, there’s another version who had gone through a great tragedy and become a recluse.” What’s in the way? The Central Theme: the response to trauma and the obstacles of existence Oh, you Gen Xers Vengeance is carnal, hope is a choice “Our situation today shows that beauty demands for itself at least as much courage and decision as do truth and goodness, and she will not allow herself to be separated and banned from her two sisters without taking them along with herself in an act of mysterious vengeance.” - Han Urs von Balthasar In this regard, the teaching of Sacred Scripture is unequivocal. The Israelites were already encouraged to love one another: "You shall not take vengeance or bear any grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbour as yourself" (Lv 19: 18). At first this commandment seems restricted to the Israelites, but it nonetheless gradually takes on an ever broader sense to include the strangers who sojourn among them, in remembrance that Israel too was a stranger in the land of Egypt (cf. Lv 19: 34; Dt 10: 19). - John Paul II The world needs God. We need God. But what God do we need? In the first reading, the prophet tells a people suffering oppression that: "He will come with vengeance" (Is 35:4). We can easily suppose how the people imagined that vengeance. But the prophet himself goes on to reveal what it really is: the healing goodness of God. And the definitive explanation of the prophet's word is to be found in the one who died for us on the Cross: in Jesus, the Son of God incarnate, who here looks at us so closely. His "vengeance" is the Cross: a "No" to violence and a "love to the end". This is the God we need. - BXVI to German Bishops What does this movie say about modern society?
