The best part of this podcast is the community of people that’s come together around it -- so this week we decided to hang out with everyone and talk about… everything. Like Kevin finding fault in parents’ propensity to use food as bribes, while Matt thinks the McDonald’s $1 double cheeseburger is the greatest nutritional advance in human history. The live chat wants to know what Kevin’s been playing on the PS5 and how Demon’s Souls encourages multiple playthroughs. The live chat is OUTRAGED by Taco Bell’s menu changes, and it seems they miss the grilled stuft burrito the most. Matt’s still not over MatPat’s incorrect take about the location of milk in grocery stores, which he rages about on Discord nearly every day. Matt wants to learn Hebrew or Russian and be able to run. Kevin wants to learn Japanese and play the drums. We both have a long list of regrets. We get derailed into a serious discussion of the role of ‘passion’ in the work we do. Kevin and Matt have different but similar opinions on this, and they conclude that the real answer isn’t so much in passion and enjoyment as it is in finding meaning in the work you do. We really do love this community, and that’s why we’ve committed to reeling in another ‘white whale’ of a guest in 2021. He’s had some crazy streams lately, including one in which he got $5,000 in donations and bit through his mobile phone. He still likes to party, but it’s unlikely that he’ll have a repeat of his famous 2018 passing out stream that was the result of an entire liter of rum. Now Eggy’s into rapping, and it’s a frequent feature on his streams. He’s got a lifetime of experience to throw into his bars, from the insane 4chan hoax experience to a high-profile relationship melting down. But where’d it all begin for him on YouTube? Primink’s now-deleted video, which turned out to be an amazing thing for both of them. We hear details of the FBI showing up at Eggy’s house, tales from the gas station, and a complete rundown on exactly who buys each type of cigarette. And that’s a lead-in to our excellent Patreon questions, including the most and least kino moments in Eggy’s life. Thanks to all of our Patrons for making this show possible, and a deep, sincere thank you to Eggy not just for talking to us for so long, but sticking around for a few hours in the aftershow chat! 🎥 CREDITS: Hosts: Kevin Lieber and Matt Tabor Produced and Edited by Ben Webster → https://twitter.com/benwebsterTCU Theme by Mega Drive → http://megadrivemusic.com Opening Animation: Kidmograph City Animation: Eric Langlay "The Create Unknown" is produced by Unknown Media. 💬 CONNECT WITH US: » Chat with us on DISCORD: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw » Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/createunknown » Follow us on INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/thecreateunknown » Follow us on FACEBOOK: http://facebook.com/thecreateunknown » View our website: https://thecreateunknown.com Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy Learn more about your ad choices. Austin Evans Talks Tech, Business and Bullying [Ep. 66]

Austin explains what it’s been like navigating the ever-changing tech space and whether it’s any easier or harder now than it was back in the day. At this point, he’s got help, and a major theme of our discussion is how he’s managed to build a team that can execute his vision reliably and faithfully. But did he wait too long on building out the brand of Austin Evans? The real question for the audience is whether bullying works out for people. Wait, WHAT? No. But sometimes. But no. In the early days, Austin was inspired by everything from Harry Potter to Lemony Snicket -- and oddly enough, it influences how he approaches his YouTube tech content. Patrons ask about what Austin would do if YouTube disappeared tomorrow, whether he’d roll on TikTok, whether he’s ever going to get a Rainbow Charizard, if tech is easier or harder than other YouTube verticals, and… who’s actually sponsoring this episode. Thanks to all our Patrons for making this happen each and every week, and thanks to Austin for taking so much time to hang out! The High Art of Cultivating Cringe with ManyKudos [Ep. 65]

In a little over a year, he’s grown from 0 to 10,000 subs -- and he enters The Create Unknown to explain how he’s balanced slowly building an audience of his content with an audience who just plain likes *him*. It’s tempting to rip on lolcows and famous disasters, but Kudos explains that he’s got a bit of a moral code that guides his videos. With his Belle Delphine video, he approached the topic by respecting her privacy and keeping an appropriate distance. And that’s why he’s selling “Teethpaste” for $31. Matt and Kudos actually met in Australia last year, and Matt ended up making Kudos vomit -- but the real story is that Kevin actually invented the notion of gamer bathwater and tub-related activities. It raises a point about whether people should like your content, like you, or both. Lots of people dislike Cool Cat. Some people like eating decades-old MREs. And it’s perfectly valid to start a YouTube channel showcasing miniature radio-controlled construction equipment moving dirt in your basement. But how has ManyKudos used all of this to refine his approach to his next video subject, the chalice-wielding YandereDev? Patrons end the episode by asking Kudos where his name came from, whether he’d ever go completely hairless, whether his charity extends to a random neighbor asking for a cup of sugar, and more. Thanks to Kudos for entering the Unknown and to all the patrons, from Tots to Babies, who keep the TCU hamster wheel churning and burning. Christine Weston Chandler and Sonichu Exclusive Interview [Ep. 64]

Join our *Discord* to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw Support Christine Weston Chandler on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=4525122 Few internet personalities are as famous as Sonichu, formerly known as Christine Weston Chandler (Mama), CWC, Chris-Chan, and Christian. Sonichu’s lore extends back well over a decade, and it’s so detailed and well-archived that Gene Samuel’s documentary series is on its 44th episode of 40-minute videos. There’s a lot to unpack. We’ve wanted to talk to Sonichu and Christine for so long that it had to be a 2-year birthday to the TCU community and to us. We start by figuring out exactly who is joining us this week, because it’s not Christine. A few months ago Christine and her creation Sonichu switched bodies, so we ended up speaking with Sonichu herself, who could speak through Mama. Who and what is Sonichu? Where did Sonichu come from? We find out the truth behind the origin of the electric hedgehog and a legendary symbol of its power: the Sonichu Medallion. Then it’s on to Sonichu’s and Mama’s creative process. How exactly were the original Sonichu comics made? How were they published? What is their future? In the process, we find out what Sonichu’s daily life as a goddess is about. Our own dimension’s merge with C-197 (in which all superheroes, Original and Fictional characters exist) is forthcoming, and Sonichu explains the differences between the merged world and ours right now. And finally, as always, we take some questions from our full house of LIVE patrons. They want to know about Mama’s all-time favorite My Little Pony episode, and about her expansive collection of memorabilia. They also want the answers to some pretty serious questions: how has Mama dealt with the haters and trolls for so many years? How is she holding up today? And Mama’s answer might be the best advice anyone has ever given on The Create Unknown. Thank you to all of our patrons for supporting the show, and thanks to Sonichu for making this such a special episode for TCU and its community. Is Mr. Beast the Last YouTuber? [Ep. 63]

100% of *Patreon* funds go to making The Create Unknown, and you can get early access to episodes for just $2: https://patreon.com/thecreateunknown Join our *Discord* to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw It’s time to rejoice babies and gents -- The Create Unknown is entering its Terrible Twos. And to celebrate the second anniversary of the show, this week we highlight the three pillars it was built on: Kevin, Matt, and most importantly, the TCU community. To kick off our birthday bash, we talk about what makes that community so great and the creative network it has spawned. Even through the limitations of COVID, creators have been able to thrive and do what they do best: create. The TCU community is no exception, and between the Discord server, social media, and patreon, our listeners and supporters have landed some pretty sweet gigs. Kevin also gives us all a hot take on Fortnite concerts. Look out Travis Scott... Kevin’s on your tail. It wouldn’t be an episode of TCU without mention of the latest (and possibly greatest?) platform for content creation: Tik Tok. We want to know if it’s even worth bothering with something like YouTube at this point. Is Tik Tok just better? Is there any money in it at all? Find out what WE’RE doing on Tik Tok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMJmSyDFa/ The Tik Tok discussion makes us get a little introspective about YouTube. With all the popularity shifting to places like Twitch and Tik Tok, we gotta ask: is YouTube boomer? Is it a thing of the past like jazz? Will people look at YouTubers like we look at rock stars from the ‘70s and ‘80s? Is Mr. Beast the LAST YouTuber? Finally, we close the festivities by taking questions from the people who make this show happen, and have for over a year and a half: our patrons. They want to know about Kevin’s gamer life, which gives us an unexpected look at how Matt tests the limits of the Playstation 4. We also finally learn what Kevin’s fursona is after he has “hounded” our guests about theirs for so long, and about the brushes our beloved hosts have had with Death himself. Thank you again to all of our patrons who keep this show going, and thank you to each and every one of you for listening. We love you, Space Cowboys, and we look forward to another 37 years of The Create Unknown. Inside Encyclopedia Dramatica: Drugs, Death and Doxxing (ft. Oddguy) [Ep. 62]

100% of *Patreon* funds go to making The Create Unknown, and you can get early access to episodes for just $2: https://patreon.com/thecreateunknown Join our *Discord* to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw We interview classy, professional creators on The Create Unknown. Oddguy isn’t one of them. He’s an admin of one of the internet’s most infamous sources of degeneracy: Encyclopedia Dramatica. ED has been a constant source of controversy for 15 years, and it’s alternately celebrated as hilarious and vilified for being both hateful and destructive. After talking to Oddguy and learning about lawsuits, criminal activity, and frivolity, it’s probably both. Buckle up Space Cowboys, because this is our wildest episode yet. What’s Encyclopedia Dramatica and why should it even exist in the first place? Oddguy explains the role of a site like ED in the broad realm of online speech, the incompetence of past admins, and the hot water it’s gotten them into. What’s the best way to find out what ED is really all about? Kevin reading his own Vsauce2 entry on ED. The interplay between themes of comedy and tragedy drive both ED content and reactions to it. We talk about the effect ED might have on mental health, and exactly what the site’s target demographic is. Then we discuss the longevity online content has and its effect on someone’s image. Do people have a right to be forgotten, or is everything on the internet permanent? Does a person’s age play a role in whether they should be forgiven? Encyclopedia Dramatica is no stranger to scandal, and that includes lawsuits. Several lawsuits. Oddguy gives us a short history ED’s lawsuits and lolsuits, as well as a rundown of their most recent court challenge -- and it’s all developing in real-time. After talking to OddGuy about his own personal YouTube content -- truth streams -- we take some questions from our patrons. They want to know about the future of Encyclopedia Dramatica and the future of edgy content as a whole. Why does the website look like it hands out viruses like Halloween candy, and why keep going in the face of so many lawsuits? Thanks again to ALL our patrons for making this show happen, and to Oddguy for joining us on an episode that had to be heavily edited before release -- and those patrons who showed up for the live, unedited recording got a show they’ll never forget. His unrivaled coding ability and creative vision have given life to amazing inventions like “The Roomba That Screams When it Bumps Into Stuff” and “Trigger Me Elmo,” and he streams most of the design process on Twitch to offer a peek at what it’s like inside the mind of YouTube’s resident mad scientist. Today, Michael takes a break from designing his masterpieces to sit down with us on The Create Unknown. Every generation needs a scientific figurehead. Mr. Wizard and Bill Nye dominated the 20th century. Is Michael Reeves the next generation of science, engineering, and coding entertainment? We also learn the incredible lengths Matt has gone to just to record this episode -- and why he sounds like a tornado warning broadcaster. After that we explore Michael’s most recent project: The Laser Baby. He partnered with Amazon for their series “The Boys,” but he took a pretty unconventional approach to promoting the show. Kevin talks about his wildly different experience with making sponsored videos, and it leaves us wondering: just how did Michael pull it off? Michael makes some of the most unique and fun videos on YouTube, so how does he come up with his bizarre, unique ideas? He also employs an abnormal editing process, which may keep him from hiring an editor and also throw a wrench into collaborations. Then we get down to business. We talk about Michael’s former work experience as a software developer, his near-experience as a psychiatrist, and even his time working for the government. He also tells us about his self-teaching method that he used to learn everything he knows about software engineering -- and it’s much cheaper than you might think. Oh, and we also learn about Michael’s explosive, podcast-interrupting bladder. Finally, we take some questions from our patrons who have been saving these up for the year and a half they’ve begged Michael to Enter the Unknown. They want to know all the watchlists he’s probably on, the average cost of his projects, and how he keeps coaxing his friends and loved ones into his various taser-laden death traps. A huge thank you to all of our baby-saving patrons -- you really make this show happen. Whang’s research for his “Tales From the Internet” series has taken him to some odd places, so is there anything that he finds weird at this point? Or is he just desensitized to it all? We kick off the episode by finding out his shockingly tame answer. And then we talk about what he really does with his “Immortality Rings.” We discuss Whang’s life on Twitter and the invaluable currency that is the Whang Retweet. He tells us what kind of material makes the cut, what happens when a retweet goes wrong, and how Kevin’s 1980’s computer swimsuit tweet took on a horrible life of its own. Whang’s made several successful series on his YouTube channel, and that plays into a discussion about a shift to longer-form, documentarian style content like iDubbbz, Internet Historian, and more. But the recipe for that sort of content is delicate; Whang tells us what makes his videos successful *and* what he avoids. Then we get stupid. Online genius is remarkably dumb. Are the Paul brothers and Belle Delphine secret geniuses? And what sort of perceptions of a creator influence the content they actually make? Can “internet good guys” like Boogie ever change course? In addition to YouTube, Whang plays in the band Jynx -- and that career trajectory has been a wild ride. From starting off in high school to touring Europe to… why he sings Rick Astley at karaoke. Patrons want to know about the caloric value of a box in one of Whang’s infamous videos, which topics he refuses to touch, his craziest experience working as an extra on TV sets, and more. She built a loyal audience and a tremendous presence on the platform to the point where she was the face of YouTube. The woman who made “My Push Up Bra Will Help Me Get My Man” and “The Cinnamon Challenge ... by GloZell and her Big Behind Earrings” was sitting directly across from President Obama for an exclusive interview. As GloZell made money, she wasn’t afraid to spend it -- but that cashflow didn’t last forever. The algorithm changed and crushed her channel. Millions of views per video turned into tens of thousands, and times got tough… fast. She’s entered The Create Unknown to tell us exactly what that rise, fall, and re-birth was like (and how you can avoid it). We open up the episode by pulling back the curtain on what it was like to have it all. We wanted to know what the most outlandish, lavish purchase she made at the peak of her career was -- and her answer would’ve lived in a jar in an 18th century doctor’s office. She tells us about all sorts of bad decisions and how her peers only fueled the madness. After that we talk about the reason it all went south: the algorithm change. The system went from favoring short, easily digestible, viral content to supporting longer, ten minute videos almost exclusively. This hit many of YouTube’s original creators like a truck, causing so many like GloZell to fall to the wayside. She tells us what she did after she hit the bottom, what her social life was like after the money started to run out, what she would’ve done differently if she had another shot at it all, and how exactly she’s adapted to reinvigorate her career. Finally, we get into some questions from our patrons who tuned in LIVE to see GloZell in action. They want to know what puts a smile on her face, her feelings toward work on projects like Escape the Night, the difference between making a YouTube video and working in old school media, and just how much money it would take for her to spend the next 4300 years as a series of ducks. And Baby Gang Jeff’s question about hot sauce took the episode in a direction we *really* didn’t expect. Thank you to each and every one of our patrons -- you really do make every episode of this show happen.
