Welcome to THE STORY OF THE SOMME podcast series, which tells the story of the Somme Offensive in the words of those fighting on the Western Front and their families back home.
The series was commissioned by the DEPARTMENT FOR DIGITAL, CULTURE, MEDIA AND SPORT and developed in partnership with the FIRST WORLD WAR CENTENARY BATTLEFIELD TOURS PROGRAMME and CHROMERADIO. It was first released to accompany the SOMME100 VIGIL at Westminster Abbey, held through the night of 30 June/1 July 2016 to mark the centenary of the opening of the Battle of the Somme.
In this podcast, CAPTAIN ROLAND PHILIPPS makes plans for life after the War. Roland Philipps was born in London in 1890 to an aristocratic family. He was educated at Winchester and New College, Oxford before being commissioned into the Royal Fusiliers. He was a friend of Baden-Powell, founder of the Scout Movement, and by 1913 was Scouting Commissioner for East London. Philipps and Baden-Powell corresponded regularly about the future of the Scout Movement after the War.

Welcome to THE STORY OF THE SOMME podcast series, which tells the story of the Somme Offensive in the words of those fighting on the Western Front and their families back home.

In this podcast, SERGEANT ALEXANDER PATERSON recalls being sent out to gather intelligence. Alexander Paterson enlisted in the Rifle Brigade on 8 September 1914, arriving in France in 1915. He was wounded in the later stages of the Somme Offensive and honourably discharged from the army in early 1917. He was awarded both the Distinguished Conduct Medal and the Military Medal for gallantry in action.

In this podcast, we hear from PRIVATE DONALD MURRAY about preparations for the Battle of the Somme. Donald Murray was born in Bradford in 1893 into a working class family of six children. When Britain declared war in August 1914, he decided to join up. He and his fellow apprentices went straight to the recruiting office and enlisted as a group in the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He arrived in France in May 1915, and his battalion went ‘over the top’ on the first day of the Somme.

In August 2018, students from across the United Kingdom joined students from France, the United States, Canada and Australia on the Western Front to commemorate the Battle of Amiens. The following podcasts, recorded during that battlefield tour, tell the story of the Battle of Amiens in the wider context of the First World War and the road to armistice.
