A series of podcasts commissioned by UCL INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION'S FIRST WORLD WAR CENTENARY EDUCATION PROGRAMME to mark the CENTENARY of the BATTLE OF AMIENS on 8 August 1918.
In August 2018, students from across the United Kingdom joined students from France, the United States, Canada and Australia on the Western Front to commemorate the Battle of Amiens. This podcast series, recorded mostly during that battlefield tour, tell the story of the Battle of Amiens in the wider context of the First World War and the road to armistice.
In this podcast, we join the students on their visit to a battlefield cemetery in CATERPILLAR VALLEY. Situated in the southern sector of the Somme battlefield, this was a part of the Front where there were Allied successes during the Somme offensive.

In this podcast, LIEUTENANT CHARLES SAUNDERS writes a last letter home before his battalion went 'over the top' on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Charles Saunders was born in Lowestoft in 1888. When war broke out, he was working for the Beccles branch of Barclays Bank. He enlisted in the Scots Greys before being commissioned into the 15th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment.

In this podcast, PRIVATE WILL MARSHALL remembers 'going over the top' on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. William Marshall was born in Burnley in 1893. He was working as a cotton weaver when he enlisted in the Accrington Pals on 17 September 1914. On 1 July 1916, his Battalion went ‘over the top’ opposite the village of Serre in the northern sector of the Somme.

In this podcast, LANCE CORPORAL SIDNEY RICHARDS recalls the action at Gommecourt on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Sidney Richards was born in West Bromwich in 1895. Before the War, he had worked as a glass silverer and a clerk. He joined the 137th Brigade, Machine Gun Company and took part in the artillery bombardment before the men went ‘over the top’ on 1 July 1916. His account of the action at Gommecourt that morning was published in the Trinity Church Parish Magazine.
