#49: Dr. George Athanassakos (Ivey Business School) - Value Investing from Ben Graham to Warren Buffett
This episode, we are joined by Dr. George Athanassakos - Professor of Finance and the Ben Graham Chair in Value Investing at Ivey Business School. Dr. Athanassakos is the Founder & Managing Director of The Ben Graham Centre for Value Investing, and the Founder and Managing Director of the Center for the Advancement of Value Investing Education. Prior to joining Ivey, Dr. Athanassakos spent a number of years at various research-related positions with banking and trust companies in Canada and Greece, and taught at York University and Wilfrid Laurier University, where he was professor of Finance and Founder & Director of Laurier's Financial Planning Program. Dr. Athanassakos has a BA from The School of Industrial Studies of Thessalonica, Greece, and a MA, MBA & PhD in Finance from York University. The Financial Planning Standards Council has bestowed Dr. Athanassakos with the FP Canada™ Fellow distinction for his outstanding contribution to furthering the organizations mission. Dr. Athanassakos is also a Fellow of the Quality Shareholder Initiative at the Law School of George Washington University in Washington, DC. He is the only Canadian to receive this distinction.Dr. Athanassakos has been ranked among the top 10 researchers in Canada by research published in Financial Management and among the top 10 Canadian professors by the Globe and Mail. He has also prepared studies on the Canadian capital markets and industry analyses for Greece and Canada. #48: Mike Toffan (Project Forest) - The Uncommon Centrist, Transparency & Reforestation vs. Industry
This episode, we are joined by Project Forest founder - Mike Toffan!Mike graduated with a degree in Forest Management from the University of Alberta and has since used his experience as General Manger of Reclamation and Forestry at Tree Time Services to found Project Forest. Project Forest is a non-profit reforestation company that has partnered with conservation groups and private landowners to afforest large areas of land. Project Forest leverages their strong relationship with silviculture foresters at Tree Time Services to develop site specific plans and utilize the largest privately held seed bank in Alberta to ensure the correct seed species are used to plant trees.The first partner to sign on to the project was Tidewater Midstream, who in their first year of investment will see 4,000 trees take root within Alberta’s newest forest, removing over 2,100 metric tonnes of C02 and create over 1.2 million pounds of biomass over its lifespan.It was a great episode and I really like Project Forest because they actually work with industry and companies like Tidewater Midstream to help give back to reforestation.You can find them at projectforest.ca for more details and information on how you can support reforestation!We sat down for a smooth cup of rose bros coffee and talked about taking centrist view on industry vs. the environmental, being transparent as a non-profit, environmental problems and opportunities, how you can help and a lot more!Enjoy!Support the show

This episode we are joined by entrepreneur - Mitch Jacobsen - CEO and Founder of Rviita Energy Tea.After graduating with a degree in petroleum engineering, Mitch spent the first few years of his career in the energy industry.However, after a close friend's heart attack - part of which was attributed to unhealthy energy drinks - Mitch believed there had to be a better product which supplied energy and was also made of healthy ingredients.Mitch used his experience in sports combined with a lot of trial and error in the lab to create a low sugar energy tea made to give you a little energy when you need it most, without the crash and unhealthy ingredients.Fast forward a few years, Rvitta Energy Tea is now sold in 300 stores across Canada with major plans going forward.Along with co-founders Karly Jacobsen and Robert Wigg, Rviita is soon planning to launch in the USA as well as further expand in Canada. This episode we are joined by entrepreneur - Lou Rosenfeld (MSc, Engineering) - owner of Lou's Performance Centre.Lou's provides boot fitting services as well as high performance ski equipment including everything from skis, boots and bindings to foot beds, boot lifters and every thing else in between.In short, Lou’s specializes in adapting ski equipment with the knowledge of Biomechanics and modern pressure/balance measuring tools to properly set up alpine skiers. Lou has also published numerous articles and academic papers on everything from the science of boot fitting to avalanche transceivers. This episode we are joined by Don Hladiuk - scientist and professional geologist who has been heard for over 35 years on on the CBC morning show the Calgary EyeOpener as well as seen occasionally on CBC and CTV local TV news.Don is also an enrichment lecturer for the Road Scholar “Astronomy Above the Arctic Circle” program (Norway) and gives presentations on what’s up in the night sky to various organizations.Among other things, Don was the President of the Calgary centre of The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) from 1990-1992 and is a member of the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse Task Force for Astronomical Society of Canada. This season Ben has opted to race as solo athlete, since he was not re-selected to be a member of the Canadian National Ski Team which further adds to this great story.
