The First Degree

On August 13th, 1994, a 9-year-old little girl is snatched from her bed in the middle of the night. Hundreds of volunteers sweep the cornfields of Brighton, Iowa, desperate to locate the little girl. Local law enforcement exhaust their every resource to find her: canine units, helicopters, off-road vehicles, over 500 missing child posters, internet forums, and more. But no matter how hard they look, investigators only discover one clue: a screen door that was removed from its tracks and placed outside the house where the little girl was sleeping. After five days of searching with nothing to show for it, the little girl’s family, the police, and local residents are losing hope. Until, suddenly, the very same man who installed the dismantled screen door confesses. On October 17, 1996, a 41 year old repair shop owner and father of three is bludgeoned to death at his home in St Amant, Louisiana, by an intruder. The killer leaves a bloody baseball bat in the victims’ bathtub, but there appears to be little forensic evidence indicating who’s responsible. For detectives, without any leads or solid direct evidence, it seems a confession will be the only way to solve the case. It won’t be until over a year later, in November 1997, that law enforcement would apprehend the killer. Tragically, by this stage he’d killed another five people. In 1984, 13-year-old Allison Tinsley moves out of her abusive mother’s home in South Carolina. Like a real-life fairytale, Allison is going to live with her rich and loving father, 36-year-old Dwaine Tinsley, in Los Angeles. It's perfect, until one day Dwaine sneaks into Allison’s bedroom and molests her. From then on, for five years, Dwaine would sexually abuse Allison multiple times a week. All the while, Dwaine was the creator of Hustler magazine’s Chester the Molester comic strip, which depicts a perverted old man who tricks little girls into having sex with him. In 1989, Allison informs the police of her father’s abuse, and Dwaine is sentenced to six years in prison. But due to a technicality, his conviction is overturned after two years. On July 21, 2019, two brothers from Wisconsin aged in their twenties and thirties go missing after visiting a rural property outside Braymer, Missouri. In the following days, police learn that a 25 year old cattle farmer from the Braymer area may know something about the disappearances. He admits to driving the vehicle the brothers took to the farm, but he hasn’t seen them since. When human remains are discovered at the site 10 days after the brothers were last seen, police realize the truth behind the brothers disappearance is darker than they could have imagined. It’s not long before investigators zero in on the cattle farmer, who owes the brothers a six figure sum.
