Egwene and Nynaeve have been traveling all winter. Verin has brought the young women, Hurin, and a now comatose Matrim Cauthon all the way to Tar Valon from Falme. Lots of speculation on Verin's dual nature as a co-conspirator with Suian, and Moiraine, and also an unwilling member of the Black Ajah. The women have a confrontation with a group of Whitecloaks that does not go to Verin's liking. Moiraine and Perrin have a conversation about the Wolfbrother Talent. She has almost no information for him, other than this Talent being strongly related to the World of Dreams. Rand hunts Darkhounds in the night. This is the first time we see him or anyone, use Balefire in the series. The Dark One's taint on Saidin is a powerful check on Rand. The wound in his side seems to break open whenever he's exposed to the taint, but he continues on, being driven eastward by the Darkhounds, toward Tear, the Stone, Callandor, and destiny. The Party makes it's way down from it's winter camp in the Mountains of Mist, South and East in search of signs of the Dragon. Eventually, they come upon a small town called Jarra, where strange things have been happening. A local man asks Perrin what Moiraine might be able to do for his brother, Noam, who we know much later as the wolf named Boundless. Perrin is awoken by Lan, who tells him that Rand has left the camp. We think this is when Masema really goes off the deep end, and so does Perrin. Rand has finally made his move, the one that Moiraine knew would come. Whether this is an action born of Rand's frustrations at inaction, the dreams he and anyone near him are having, or the Pattern itself pushing on him, no one seems to know. We think it's some combination of the three. Moiraine sends Min to Tar Valon before the party leaves to follow the Dragon. Perrin has been awoken, and warned of an attack by the wolves through is dreams. He can see in the dark, hear, and smell the Shadowspawn wherever they are. Perrin is Dangerous to them. “Hamstring and throat, that was how wolves killed”, and so Young Bull does to the Myrddraal that attacks him. Although, the Neverbron are always long in dying. Lots of awesome fight scenes in this chapter. Perrin, a pack of wolves, Lan, Moiraine, and even Loial – a small army. “There was no honor in the way the wolves fought, no glory, no mercy. They did not come for battle, but to kill.” When the battle is over, and the wolves are hunting the Shadowspawn as they retreat, Rand leaves the camp unnoticed. Perrin arrives in a dream, not knowing how he got there. This is a Dreamshard. Ishamael asks about his ax, and when he'll give it up. This relates to the Dark prophecy about 'The Blacksmith'. Lanfear and Ishamael try to get Perrin to drink from a cup. What's in it and why? Hopper moves Perrin to another place in TAR, an argument between some of the Forsaken, it's about what to do with Callandor, and Rand, then to another place, the Stone of Tear. Mountain wolves are repeatedly trying to warn Young Bull about shadowspawn, he continues to ignore them. The camp is being rebuilt after the earthquake caused by Rand. Leya, one of the Blue Ajah's eyes and ears, was injured giving us a bit of a red herring as far as Min's earlier viewing on her. Leya however, never returns to her wagons. Moiraine seems to know that something is up, and warns the camp to remain vigilant. We hear news about the Hunt for the Horn, an the Whitecloak's movements and actions on the Almoth Plain. We hear our first news of the Greymen searching for Rand, and killing anyone that even looks like him. When does Rand start losing his mind? The madness creeps slowly. Rand and Perrin both fight against their destiny. Min predicts the Death of the Tinker woman, Leya. Perrin correctly predicts an attack on the camp, though he continues to ignore messages from the wolves, which are probably a warning. Rand and Moiraine argue over whether to wait or to go help the people fighting and dying in the name of the Dragon on Almoth Plain. Perrin, Rand, and their small party have been waiting all winter, holed up in the Mountains of Mist, waiting for the pattern to spin their threads in the right direction. Moiraine has been receiving news from outside the camp from her eyes and ears, using Perrin as a kind of go-between. Through out the chapter Perrin is ignoring messages from the wolves, refusing to listen to what is probably a warning of the Shadowspawn that are hunting the Dragon's small party. Byar is convinced that the Darkfriend Perrin is responsible for their betrayal. We believe he may be under compulsion and go over our evidence. Niall orders Carridin to keep Rand alive, explains his plan to use the 'False Dragon', and assures Carridin that if he or the Dragon dies during this risky plan, so will Carridin.
