Trigger warning for a long discussion about sexual assault, because this is THAT CHAPTER where Tylin imposes on Mat to the utmost extreme. Today Seth is absent from the recording, and Aradia brings in Gus from Wheel Takes to discuss this infamous scene that generates some of the most hotly contested content in the entire Wheel of Time series. We are not discussing “if” Mat was assaulted, but rather examining how Robert Jordan created a nuanced analysis of sexual assault. After Mat is free to go, he meets up with Nalesean, Birgitte, Beslan and some of his friends, and they go walking through the Festival of Birds, which sounds a bit like Mardi Gras? They are attacked by Darkfriend beggars, then make it to their watching spot for spying on the Kin’s base of operations. Mat can’t take his mind off of events, and is horrified that Beslean not only knows but approves of Tylin’s interest in him. To escape the situation, he randomly follows a Kinswoman, setting in motion the discovery of the Bowl of the Winds, at long last. Aradia and Seth are alone on this chapter, fittingly. They are both surviving the heat dome crushing the Pacific Northwest, much as our characters are surviving the touch of the Dark One on the weather. Perrin leaves Rand to fetch the Prophet, a quick trip that definitely won’t define his story for the next several books. He also takes a few minor characters with him, like Berelain, some of our favorite Aiel, and cha’Faile. Loial departs with Karldin, and we never quite see him again.
