# 348 - Exhausted all the time ? - Dr Dave Mc Carty

Do you have trouble sleeping ? Are you exhausted all the time ? Do you snore, perhaps you dont but you still dont get a good quality sleep? Have you ever considered you may have sleep apnea? In this episode, I am joined by sleep apnea specialist Dr Dave McCarty who has worked in this area taking a patient centred approach to treat sleep apnea sufferers for decades. We hear about the difference between obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea and the reasons one might suffer from each condition. We hear about the impact of sleeping with your mouth open. We discover that 1 in 8 people globally are suffering from sleep apnea!! We learn about the health implications of suffering from sleep apnea. We also learn that you could have sleep apnea and not even know it because snoring isnt always a symptom of sleep apnea. # 346 - Obesity shouldn't be a blame game - Dr Yoni Freedhoff

Dr Yoni Freedhoff is an associate professor of family medicine at the University of Ottawa. In 2004, he became the founder and medical director of the Bariatric Medical Institute which provides non-surgical weight management. He is one of Canada's most outspoken obesity experts, and what follows is an insightful conversation about obesity. A conversation which, if I hold my hand up, certainly gave me a greater appreciation of its complexitities. My stance on obesity hitherto, had erred on the side of the need for greater education and application of personal responsibility. We hear about the current state of the obesity epidemic, whether there is a role that eductation can play in changing behaviour at population level. # 345 - Why we get sick - Dr Ben Bikman

Dr Benjamin Bikman is the author of Why we get sick, which makes the case for insulin resistance and metabolic dysfunction as the underlying cause of many of our modern health problems. He earned his Ph.D. in Bioenergetics and was a postdoctoral fellow with the Duke-National University of Singapore in metabolic disorders. Currently, his professional focus as a scientist and associate professor (Brigham Young University) is to better understand the role of elevated insulin in regulating obesity and diabetes, including the relevance of ketones in mitochondrial function. In this episode we hear about how the ease with which we can measure glucose and the historic understanding and relationship with glucose has distracted medicine from the importance of insulin which is alot more difficult to measure. We hear about the value of wearing glucose monitors but that the data they offer is only part of the metabolic picture. We learn about what insulin resistance is and the role the foods we eat plays in making us insulin resistant. Expect to learn about the relationship between inflammation and high insulin levels. Dr. Kaeberlein’s research is focused on the biological mechanisms of aging in order to help us intervene so that we can maintain good health and quality of life for longer than is currently possible. He has published more than 200 scientific papers, has been recognized by several prestigious awards, and has Fellow status in the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the American Aging Association, and the Gerontological Society of America (GSA). Dr. Kaeberlein is currently the CEO of the American Aging Association. Dr. Kaeberlein is the founding Director of the UW Healthy Aging and Longevity Research Institute, the Director of the UW Nathan Shock Center of Excellence in the Basic Biology of Aging, Director of the Biological Mechanisms of Healthy Aging Training Program, and founder and co-Director of the Dog Aging Project.
