Investigators searching for Mamta Bhatt arrived at her home with search warrants and were shocked to find the house in disarray upon entering the front door. They noticed packed luggage and, in plain view, passports belonging to Mamta's husband, Naresh, and their daughter, Neema. Inside the home, officers used Bluestar Technology, a forensic tool that reveals invisible blood traces at crime scenes, uncovering pools of blood and blood spatter throughout the house. In the master bedroom, the bed had been moved to block access to the closet. After moving the bed, detectives observed a light pink stain on the carpet, which they suspected to be blood. Following the discovery of the light pink stain in the master bedroom, investigators noticed what appeared to be a blood trail leading from the bedroom to the master bathroom. Using Bluestar technology in the bathroom, detectives were shocked as the entire bathroom floor illuminated with what appeared to be blood. In the master bathroom, investigators carefully removed the bathtub and confirmed, with the naked eye, what they believed to be blood—not only around the tub area but also trapped in the caulking. Investigators suspect that Naresh Bhatt killed his wife, dragged her body, creating a blood trail, and concealed it in a location that has yet to be discovered. Although the body has not been found, investigators believe the amount of blood detected in the master bedroom and bathroom is inconsistent with survival. What began as an investigation into the suicide of a popular high school athlete uncovered an international sextortion ring. On Twitter, Jordan Demay received a message from a user named Dani Roberts, who convinced him to send explicit photos. Moments later, the situation turned dark. "Dani Roberts" demanded money, threatening to send the photos to Jordan’s family and friends if he didn’t comply. Jordan sent all the money he had, but the demands continued. Six hours later, Jordan Demay took his own life. Days after Jordan’s death, his girlfriend received one of his explicit photos and went to the police. Marquette County Sheriff's detectives, working with the FBI, traced "Dani Roberts'" IP address to Nigeria. Three Nigerian men—Ezekiel Robert and brothers Samuel and Samson Ogoshi—were linked to Jordan’s case and over 100 other victims. Five U.S. citizens are now accused of facilitating the sextortion scams, handling payments from victims, and transferring the money to Nigeria. Prosecutors allege the defendants laundered nearly $200,000 for the scammers. In a significant ruling, the South Carolina Supreme Court will determine whether interference from a court clerk influenced the jury's decision to convict Alex Murdaugh of killing his wife, Maggie, and youngest son, Paul. Murdaugh's lawyers allege that Becky Hill, the court clerk, attempted to sway the jury to secure a conviction in order to promote a book she is writing about the case, particularly focusing on the trial. Concerns about potential jury tampering were raised during the trial. Trial Judge Clifton Newman addressed the issue in an in-chambers discussion with defense and prosecution attorneys, expressing concern that court clerk Becky Hill might have had inappropriate contact with at least one juror, who was later dismissed from the trial. Following the trial, Murdaugh's attorneys sought to have Newman barred from hearing any appeals in the case; however, Newman retired before a decision was made. His replacement, retired Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court, Judge Jean Toal, ultimately rejected the claims of jury tampering. The South Carolina Supreme Court has now overturned Judge Toal's decision, meaning the state Supreme Court will consider whether Alex Murdaugh should be granted a retrial.
