A bit of what's news for now

It's a new week and a new month, but we're still fighting old battles. Some of those old battles are getting really old by now... like the latest obstruction from the senator from West Virginia who must be on some kind of a weird power trip right now. As regular listeners of this show know, I'm in Florida. Our governor embodies the worst of Trump. If Florida is to survive, we must get rid of this clown. In the couple of months, I've interviewed the two Democrats vying for the nomination to oppose DeSantis next November. A third candidate has now thrown her hat in the ring. Annette Taddeo joins me today to introduce herself to Floridians and the rest of the country.

The only thing that makes a Friday better is ending the week with Elie Mystal as my guest. Elie is Justice Correspondent for The Nation, but he approaches the law, the Supreme Court and the ridiculous situation in which we find ourselves with a sense of humor to match his insights. No one can deny that this was a shit show of a week.... but at least Elie Mystal will help us stick a fork in it today.

t's a very busy Thursday...er... Friday eve. As usual, Howie Klein of Down with Tyranny and the Blue America PAC will be here and we will delve into what happened today as President Biden went to Capitol Hill to beg the Democrats to pass the BIF... it's all so complicated, but we'll attempt. We'll begin, though, with James North, who's been writing about the saga of the human rights attorney Steven Dozinger who reported to prison yesterday because of charges brought against him by Chevron, who he successfully sued on behalf of the indigenous people of Ecuador. I seriously couldn't make this shit up if I tried. Strap in... we have a lot of ground to cover today...

We begin today's show with the latest on the Democrats' negotiations about the two infrastructure bills and President Biden's domestic agenda, and how two senators (Manhenema) are sabotaging it and the future of not only the Democratic Party, but democracy in the United States itself. Call me cynical... I may have to add the CY back to the beginning of my name (cynicole..... get it?) One thing is for sure, that's that the Democratic Party has a messaging problem. It's been the case for as long as I can remember, but I don't recall it being THIS awful. To help understand the problem, and perhaps get some communication tips for ourselves, I'm happy to welcome John Neffinger to the show. John has served as Communications Director of the Democratic National Committee, taught on the faculty at both Columbia and Georgetown Universities, served on staff at Harvard's Kennedy School and worked as a management consultant and as an attorney. John is the co-author of "Compelling People: The Hidden Qualities That Make Us Influential," which is the first non-specialist account of modern social judgment theory and is now published in twelve languages. He was involved in conducting some of the earliest research on the effects of appearance and non-verbal communication in electoral politics, and his work with KNP has been featured in a Harvard Business School case study. I participated in a media training with him close to 10 years ago... I'll get his thoughts about the communications problem in today's Democratic party.

With the rise of Donald Trump to dear leader of the Republican party and wannabe dictator for life, er, president, came the unmasking of white supremacists in America. Today, we'll get the history behind our nation's giant leap backwards. My guest is Kathleen Belew, one of the two editors of a new book released today, "A Field Guide to White Supremacy."
