Badger, Big Ten Update with Jesse Temple + Hoosier Hype & LSU Lowdown with Brody Miller
News blew in on a strong gust Tuesday, as the Wisconsin announced starting QB, Graham Mertz, tested positive for Covid-19, in addition, doubt loomed over UW"s conference clash with Nebraska on Saturday. Andy enlists the service of The Athletic's University of Wisconsin penman, Jesse Temple, to analyze the maelstrom of info (:30). What is the Big Ten's protocol for players who have contracted Covid? How long will Mertz be sidelined? What other options do the Badgers have at QB, and what will the Big Ten do about Wisconsin-Nebraska? With a well timed transitionary sound effect ("well timed" is debatable), Andy is now chatting with The Athletic's LSU scribe and University of Indiana alumnus, Brody Miller, who, for few minutes, is reveling in Indiana's spectacular win over Penn State (7:00). Just how good is former Tennessee commit, Penix Jr. (10:30)?! Now that there are expectations Indiana has to live up to, is Brody worried the team will crumble? From UI to LSU, just how impressive was last week's offensive showcase, and what lead to TJ Finley and the offense's success (15:45)? How beneficial is it to have to competent QBs (18:30)? The guys preview the Tigers' upcoming date with Auburn and examine the former's defensive miscues (19:30). What matchups could play in either team's favor (22:30)? Is it too late in the season to consider South Carolina as the inflection point in LSU's season (26:30), and can we safely assess who/what this Auburn team is (29:00)?Follow Andy on Twitter: @Andy_StaplesFollow Jesse on Twitter: @jessetempleFollow Brodie on Twitter: @BrodyAMillerListen to The Athletic's LSU podcast, 'Hear That Podcast, Podcast':https://theathletic.com/podcast/195-hold-that-podcast-podcast/https://apple.co/3mzYraVJoin The Athletic for just $1 a month! Saturday Roundup: Indiana Ices Penn State in OT, "Compfident" Michigan & Bama Blasts Tennessee with Max Olson
Finally, some Big10 football that we can react to! Andy and Max Olson examine the Big10's opening slate of games. Atop the list of which matchups to cover first, the duo respond to Indiana's thrilling overtime upset over Penn State (:30). Devyn Ford realized what he had done just a moment too late. Tom Allen's gutsy two-point conversion in extra time was must-watch TV, and don't forget his emotionally charged postgame speech! Plus, what's next for the Nittany Lions with Ohio State on deck? Michigan's offense looked both competent and confident..."compfident"?... against P.J. Fleck's Golden Gophers (11:45). Greg Schiano helps Rutgers net their first conference win since 2017 by downing Michigan State (16:00). Ohio State didn't appear to skip a beat from last season, which was illustrated in their dismantling of Nebraska (19:15). A Tennessee-Alabama rap spells a wrap for the Volunteers' bid to move past .500 (22:30). LSU, TJ Finley impress in a one-sided affair over South Carolina (28:15). Good thing Andy didn't bet on Pittsburgh again, plus Travis Etienne puts a dent in the "sweet" over savory/greasy breakfast food debate (36:45). The guys blitz the ACC docket of games (37:15) before reacting to Graham Mertz's first game under center for Wisconsin (41:00), Iowa State's first conference loss (44:00) and next week's Arkansas-Texas A&M and Bama-Mississippi State contests (46:15). Numbers with Ari, Andy's 100 Pushup Payout & Random Rankings!
Pull out your abacuses because it's time to calculate weekend outcomes with Ari Wasserman! He and Andy cruise through Pittsburgh-Notre Dame and set the stage for the Andy's pushup party (:30). As the upper body workout begins, Ari previews the Big10's opening weekend, starting with Wisconsin-Illinois (8:30). Are the 19.5-points the Badgers are favored by enough? Could Wisconsin blow the doors off this game early? "Mom's spaghetti, knees weak, arms are heavy." Andy's not enjoying his mother's pasta dish, but his arms sure are HEAVY, speaking of which, is there a heavy favorite in Penn State-Indiana (15:00)? Clapping pushups??? Are you kidding us, Andy??? Could Nebraska clap back at Ari for believing Ohio State will dominate this contest (18:00)? On the topic of the Big 10, will Bo Pelini's defense keep South Carolina in check (23:45)? Can we expect the 2-0 Tennessee who started the season off strong, or the 0-2 Tennessee club that's floundered against Georgia and Kentucky this Saturday against 'Bama (26:15)? It is done. Next week's bet is set. Michigan-Minnesota...and a dark beer (36:45). Plus, would P.J. Fleck be more likely to stay at Minnesota where he could, potentially, have a statue of himself outside TCF Bank Stadium, or take over a more prestigious program and earn more dough? Who's most likely to drop their first conference game of the season, Oklahoma State or Iowa State (46:15)? Big 10 Preview: Can Anyone Beat Buckeyes, Losing Brown Big Blow for PSU & Michigan's Milton Era with Bill Landis, Audrey Snyder & Nick Baumgardner
Andy and friends present a BIG Big 10 preview in today's show! The Athletic's Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan scribes, Bill Landis, Audrey Snyder and Nick Baumgardner, respectively, join Andy in analyzing the upcoming year. Andy and Landis take a look at Justin Fields and his fellow Buckeyes' off-season, including voicing their urge to play (2:15)? Who's Ohio State's next great defensive lineman and how does the defense project this season (5:15)? Does any member of the '10' pose a threat to OSU (8:30), and how was Ryan Day able to keep his core members together despite an exponential amount of setbacks (9:45)? Snyder stops by next to address Penn State stud running back, Journey Brown's, medical condition that could sideline him all of 2020 (11:30). What headspace are the Nitty Lions in ahead of their season opener against Indiana (14:45) and considering the Hoosiers are in the headlights, is the impeding clash against OSU this team's immediate focus (16:15)? PSU aspires to usurp Ohio State as the conference's top...Lion(?)...however, does the program's progress appear stunted or is OSU just that good (19:00)? Baumgardner breaks down Washtenaw County's Covid-19 advisory, which affects U-M's campus. So, how does this figure into the Wolverines plans as they prepare for Minnesota on the road (25:00)? Are all the Jim Harbaugh-Michigan questions/narratives finally extinct, or has everyone just been keyed in on making sure there's an actual football season (27:00)? The Joe Milton era at U-M starts now (30:45). What can we expect? Where does Michigan fall in the Big 10 pecking order (33:00), and, lastly, let's preview Michigan-Minnesota (34:15)!Follow Andy on Twitter: @Andy_StaplesFollow Bill Landis on Twitter: @BillLandis25Follow Audrey Snyder on Twitter: @audsnyder4Follow Nick Baumgardner on Twitter: @nickbaumgardnerJoin The Athletic for just $1 a month!
