What is the Goal?: The Truth About the Youth Sports Industry with Dr. Jean Linscott and Dr. Kenneth Ruff

Dr. Dan interviews husband-and-wife team Jean Linscott, Ph.D. and Kenneth Ruoff, Ph.D.about their new book What is the Goal?: The Truth About the Youth Sports Industry. With Dr. Dan, Dr. Ken and Dr. Jean explore how the current youth sports industry, pay-to-play sports, and the quest for prestige can cause unintended harm to young athletes and their families. This episode explores how children and parents can both experience the pressures of belonging to a sports team along with feeling the need to have a "return on investment" and how this can lead to resentment, poor mental health, and injuries that can stop a career before it even starts. Dr. Dan, Dr. Jean, and Dr. Ken also ask: since sports can be a ticket into prestigious schools are the benefits worth the risks? Kenneth Ruoff, Ph.D., is a professor of history at Portland State University and the author of several award-winning books. From the perspective of a historian, he is astonished, in comparison to what he experienced as a kid, at how drastically different a youth-sports environment his family has faced these past two decades. He was a member of the 1987 Harvard College Men’s Soccer Final Four team. Jean Linscott, Ph.D., is a clinical child psychologist. She has been working professionally with children and families for over thirty years in hospital-based, clinic, and private-practice settings.  She and Kenneth Ruoff are the parents of three athletes who are veterans of the Youth Sports Industry. For more information visit: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/what-is-the-goal-jean-linscott/1145009474?ean=9798990114302 Email your parenting questions to Dr. Dan podcast@drdanpeters.com (we might answer on a future episode). Follow us @parentfootprintpodcast (Instagram, Facebook) and @drdanpeters (X).  Learn about more podcasts @exactlyright on Instagram. Please listen, follow, rate, and review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts. Please support our podcast by shopping our latest sponsor deals and promotions at this link: https://bit.ly/4bqTWJ2For more information:www.exactlyrightmedia.com www.drdanpeters.com Learn more about your ad choices. Gender Inclusive Fashion and Self-expression with Elizabeth Brunner

Dr. Dan interviews Elizabeth Brunner, the Founder and CEO of StereoType, a disruptive kids' fashion brand that aims to break free from traditional gendered clothing by creating what she coined as "blended fashion" — a mix of girl and boy esthetics that are equal in value and defined by no one. On this episode, Dr. Dan and Elizabeth discuss why parents need to give their kids space to be themselves, gender-free fashion, conscious parenting and more.Elizabeth was inspired to start StereoType after often watching her young twins joyfully break the rules of traditional dressing by wearing pieces from each others' closets to create their own unique blended fashion style that authentically represented who they are and how they wanted to dress. StereoType offers a wide range of gender-free clothing and accessories for children ages 4-14, enabling them to express themselves through their wardrobe choices without being limited by societal expectations, limits, and stereotypes.StereoType is the second disruptive fashion company Elizabeth has started. After studying fashion design at California College of the Arts, she found herself at odds with wasteful fashion industry standards. This led her to launch her first fashion business Piece x Piece, a pioneering line of one-of-a-kind, high-end garments that reused discarded sample swatches and leftover fabric from larger fashion houses that would typically be sent to landfill. For more information visit www.stereotypekids.com.Email your parenting questions to Dr.
