Skid row stylist Shirley Raines brings the eyelashes, the masks, and the love

When Shirley Raines started doing hair for half a dozen unhoused women, she had no idea her passion project would become a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving hundreds in LA’s Skid Row every week. Through Beauty 2 The Streetz, Raines brings much-needed warmth, humanity, comfort, and even fun to the homeless population in downtown Los Angeles. And COVID didn’t slow her down at all: She just won CNN’s 2021 Hero of the Year award.I got to speak with Raines about how working in the streets helped heal her trauma, what she believes our societal responsibility is toward our unhoused neighbors, and why sometimes all they need is to be kindly called by their own name. Shirley Raines is one of the most inspiring people I’ve ever interviewed. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.Shirley RainesInstagram: instagram.com/beauty2thestreetzTwitter: twitter.com/beauty2streetzYou can follow Jessica Yellin here:Instagram: instagram.com/jessicayellinTwitter: twitter.com/jessicayellinWebsite: NewsNotNoise.comNewsletter: newsnotnoise.bulletin.comSupport this work:patreon.com/NewsNotNoiseJessica Yellin is the founder of News Not Noise, a channel dedicated to giving you news with real experts and providing information, not a panic attack. Abortion rights under fire with Hillary Schneller

The future of abortion in America is on the line. The Supreme Court has just ruled on a case and is preparing a decision on a second that could end Roe v Wade. In this episode, I talk to the co-lead counsel on one of the abortion cases before the US Supreme Court, Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization.Hillary Schneller is Senior Staff Attorney at the Center for Reproductive Rights. The group is leading the fight against both the Texas 6-week abortion ban and the Mississippi 15-week abortion ban. We spoke Friday, hours after the Supreme Court ruled on the Texas law. Justices found that abortion providers can challenge the state’s abortion law in lower courts. But they did not stay the law, meaning the near abortion ban stays in effect and women in Texas can’t get an abortion after 6 weeks. It also means that vigilante citizens can bring enforcement cases against abortion providers and others. At the same time the country anxiously awaits a ruling in another case. Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization asks the court to overturn Roe v Wade, and find that women don’t have a constitutionally protected right to abortion. In this episode we discuss what the lawyers argued before the court, what it all means, and what resources pregnant people and reproductive rights activists have if Roe is gutted.Hillary SchnellerTwitter: twitter.com/hischnellerYou can follow Jessica Yellin here:Instagram: instagram.com/jessicayellinTwitter: twitter.com/jessicayellinWebsite: NewsNotNoise.comNewsletter: newsnotnoise.bulletin.comSupport this work:patreon.com/NewsNotNoiseJessica Yellin is the founder of News Not Noise, a channel dedicated to giving you news with real experts and providing information, not a panic attack. Ending gun violence in America’s schools

In this episode, I talk to two of the people working to end gun violence in American schools. Sari Kaufman survived the school shooting as a student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL. She was a lead organizer of the March For Our Lives and a co-founder of the MyVote Project, a student-led education organization to educate voters. She is currently a sophomore at Yale University, studying political science. Shannon Watts founded Mom's Demand Action in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting which killed 26 children and educators in 2012. The organization is a leading force for gun violence prevention, working at the local, state and national levels and with chapters in all 50 states Our conversation comes on the heels of the most recent US school shooting which took the lives of 4 young people and injured 7 more. The incident, which happened on the last day of November in Oakland County, Michigan was the deadliest event at a US  campus since 2018. It was the 32nd such attack since August.Shannon WattsInstagram: instagram.com/shannonrwatts/Twitter: twitter.com/shannonrwattsSari KaufmanTwitter: twitter.com/SariKaufman11You can follow Jessica Yellin here:Instagram: instagram.com/jessicayellinTwitter: twitter.com/jessicayellinWebsite: NewsNotNoise.comNewsletter: newsnotnoise.bulletin.comSupport this work:patreon.com/NewsNotNoiseJessica Yellin is the founder of News Not Noise, a channel dedicated to giving you news with real experts and providing information, not a panic attack. All about Omicron with Dr. Ashish Jha

Dr. Ashish Jha is the man I turn to when I want public health guidance in the wake of a new variant. In this case, that variant is Omicron. He tells us what we need to know now and provides a timeline of when we will know even more. He also told me that this latest variant likely didn't start in South Africa but was, instead, simply detected there.
Dr. Jha is Dean of the Brown University School of Public Health and one of the nation's leading health policy scholars. Throughout 2020 - especially in the early days -- whenever Dr. Ashish Jha came on screen, I stopped what I was doing and turned up the volume. He knows the science and he communicates with compassion and clarity. Perhaps most importantly, he breaks this evolving pandemic down in a way that makes me believe we will one day move past the pandemic, into a more manageable place with respect to COVID.Dr. Ashish JhaTwitter: twitter.com/ashishkjhaYou can follow Jessica Yellin here:Instagram: instagram.com/jessicayellinTwitter: twitter.com/jessicayellinWebsite: NewsNotNoise.comNewsletter: newsnotnoise.bulletin.comSupport this work:patreon.com/NewsNotNoiseJessica Yellin is the founder of News Not Noise, a channel dedicated to giving you news with real experts and providing information, not a panic attack. Sometimes vegan, never shaming with Jessica Seinfeld

Jessica Seinfeld knows you don’t want to quit meat cold turkey this Thanksgiving, and she’s totally on board with that. Instead, the sometimes vegan wants you to try incorporating more plant-based foods onto your holiday table and into your diet, without any shaming or “shoulds.” She’s doing it with her own family four (or if you ask her husband Jerry, three) nights a week. Contrary to popular belief, she says, it’s not all or nothing. On this week’s episode of the News Not Noise Podcast, the other Jessica tells me all about her favorite vegan recipes in her new cookbook “Vegan, At Times,” what got her started down this path, and why you should give it a shot (if you want to!).Jessica Seinfeld:Instagram: instagram.com/jessseinfeldTwitter: twitter.com/JessSeinfeldWeb: jessicaseinfeld.comYou can follow Jessica Yellin here:Instagram: instagram.com/jessicayellinTwitter: twitter.com/jessicayellinWebsite: NewsNotNoise.comNewsletter: newsnotnoise.bulletin.comSupport this work:patreon.com/NewsNotNoiseJessica Yellin is the founder of News Not Noise, a channel dedicated to giving you news with real experts and providing information, not a panic attack.
