The current divorce rate is nowhere near 50 percent and has never been close to the 50 percent mark. Instead, the vast majority of marriages last a lifetime. Top experts continue to project divorce rates of 40 to 50 percent, but these are future projections based on various assumptions, and we’ve never come close to that high of an overall divorce rate. Most marriages (about 80%) are happy, but there’s a strong cultural message that most aren’t, which creates fear and discouragement about the institution of marriage. God’s design for marriage has been under attack. A perverted version of marriage has taken root in our culture. Marriage is to be the image of our relationship with God. There us unity in diversity. We see it in the Trinity and in the human family. The Godhead is “three in one,” and in the human family “two become one” and produce children to make three. Each part is a whole person that is essential to make the whole family. We are complementary to one another and our differences were designed as a gift. Then sin entered. As a consequence, God explains to them that their relationship is not going to work as it was designed. Now there’s this dynamic of domination and strife and unmet needs and pain and all the things that have fueled the battle of the sexes through history. But... We are in a cultural moment where there’s a battle over our inheritance and our national story. There’s one narrative that wants honor, preserve, and live more fully from what we’ve received from our founding fathers. To forgive them for their faults but also thank them for the inheritance they gave us and try to live up to it. There’s another narrative that’s about distancing ourselves from and criticizing our fathers and rejecting our inheritance, which just perpetuates the fatherlessness and orphanhood in our culture. We need to come back to the Father. And we need good fathers. We need reconciliation between the generations to see honor and life flowing again, but that begins with reconciliation to the Father. We often say that each person is made in the image of God. This is true. But if you look at this verse, you have God describing Himself in the plural--let US--and then making mankind in the plural--male and female--as his image.
