Women's Choice is More Than Roe vs Wade

In 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court could overturn Roe v Wade, imperiling all women’s freedoms, and creating a new pipeline to prison for the vulnerable just as the world is learning how counterproductive most incarceration - solutions are. Today’s guests argue that things could have been very different. If the white dominated “choice” movement had paid closer attention to all women’s choices, or lack thereof; If anti-violence advocates had rejected criminalization and incarceration as a solution to the violence in women’s lives. Things could have been different, our guests argue, if a different part of the US women’s movement had gained more attention - attention it is beginning to get now. There has always been such a movement, they know, because they were there. Today we talk to Black abolitionist feminist Beth Richie and Queer southern feminist Suzanne Pharr have worked together, for abolition, feminism, and a systemicly different world for forty years.  What have they learned? And what is their message for us now, when so much hangs in the balance?Guests:Suzanne Pharr, Co-founder, Southerners on New Ground. The Feminists Taking on Philanthropy during Covid Say Gender Justice Requires more than Money

MacKenzie Scott, ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, recently made a splash by donating nearly $3 billion to more than 280 nonprofits working in historically underfunded sectors - her third such drop in a year. But while Scott has repeatedly made headlines, the media has largely overlooked the impact that women and feminists are making on philanthropy during a pandemic that has created a global crisis for women and girls. How does feminism change the field of philanthropy in general, and how does it change the landscape for social justice movements specifically? In this episode, Laura interviews the writer and activist V, formerly known as Eve Ensler, about the effects of what she calls “disaster patriarchy.” Then, Laura goes in depth with Teresa Younger, CEO of the Ms. Foundation and member of the White House Gender Policy Council, to explore how tying the intersections of race and gender into philanthropy could make a better world for us all. Plus, Laura makes some predictions about the Right and the new Child Tax Credit… Guests:Teresa Younger, CEO of the Ms. Foundation for WomenV, formerly known as Eve Ensler, author and playwright ‘The Vagina Monologues’, founder of V-Day and 1 Billion Rising Full episode notes are posted at https://Patreon.com/theLFShow. LFShow Intern Te Maia Wiki's Audio Story: Did COP26 Make Real Change?

We are independent media.  Your partnership as a monthly supporter for as little as $3 a month is what makes our reporting possible.  Join us at https://Patreon.com/theLFShowHere at The Laura Flanders Show we have a comprehensive Internship program where participants work hands-on gaining first hand knowledge about our independent movement media operation producing our TV, radio and podcast releases. Throughout the program our entire staff spends time with each intern sharing their expertise and knowledge from editing to scripting to promotions and technical skills, and more. We mentor our interns and guide them in producing their own media pieces. You are about to hear one of those stories produced by High School student and Indigenous youth climate activist from Northern California, Te Maia Wiki,  a 16 year old descendant of the Yurok people, from the Klamath River, and the Ngāti Porou and Te Aupōuri people, of New Zealand.   Laura Flanders met her when reporting on the Red Road to D.C. Podcast Description:  In November 2021, thousands of people gathered in Glasgow, Scotland for the United Nations Climate Summit, known as COP26. Climate scientists, policy makers and global leaders identified COP26 as a watershed moment for humanity - the point beyond which no amount of intervention would reign in rising global temperatures. If we didn’t take action at COP26 then humanity, literally, would be toast. Te Maia Wiki, a 16 year old Indigenous environmental activist from northern California, was a delegate at COP26 and set out to answer one fundamental question: did we succeed? In this episode, Te Maia takes us on a journey through the murky haze of climate economics and the inequities of global climate policy created by the affluent West which have severe and damaging consequences for the developing world.  Wiki talks to Khadija Shaikh, a student at the University of Connecticut, and Amiteshwar Singh, a climate activist and Chair of the COP26 National Working Group for Students for Global Health, to answer a simple question posed by her seven year old sister: will we be okay? If you are interested or know anyone who is interested in applying for our internship program, please write us at info@LauraFlanders.org  Laura Flanders and Friends Crew:  Laura Flanders, along with Sabrina Artel, Jeremiah Cothren, Veronica Delgado, Janet Hernandez, Jeannie Hopper, Gina Kim, Sarah Miller, Nat Needham, David Neuman, and Rory O’Conner.  FOLLOW Laura Flanders and FriendsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/lauraflandersandfriends/Blueky:  https://bsky.app/profile/lfandfriends.bsky.socialFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/LauraFlandersAndFriends/Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@lauraflandersandfriendsYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFLRxVeYcB1H7DbuYZQG-lgLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/lauraflandersandfriendsPatreon:   https://www.patreon.com/lauraflandersandfriendsACCESSIBILITY - The broadcast edition of this episode is available with closed captioned by clicking here for our YouTube Channel

Bomb Threats Shake HBCUs During Black History Month

More than 20 Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) received bomb threats at the start of Black History Month — including a threat on Valentine’s Day at Howard University. While the FBI is calling it a high priority investigation and threats are spreading to high schools, there is comparatively little media coverage of this assault on civil rights and education. On this month’s “Meet the BIPOC Press” with URL Media, our guests explore the unequal media treatment of domestic terrorist threats on African American spaces and consider the racist stereotyping of Black and white youth.  We also explore the significance of HBCUs in Black History and the connections with the greater African Diaspora. How can BIPOC media lead the way to spread awareness and protect the legacy, diversity, and innovations at HBCUs?Co-hostSara Lomax-Reese, Co-Founder, URL MediaGuestsEric Grimes/Brother Shomari, Host, Groundings Evolutions Elevations, WURD RadioKrista Johnson, Director, Center for African Studies, Howard University Full episode notes are posted at https://Patreon.com/theLFShow. Far too often, these projects displace long-standing residents and communities of color. What would it look like if real estate development were led by the people who already live in the neighborhood? In this episode, Laura interviews South Bronx native Majora Carter who decided to stay where she grew up and rewrite the playbook for neighborhood development. A self-described “chick from the hood… with zero experience in real estate,” she's a MacArthur “genius award” recipient, owner of the hip hop themed Boogie Down Grind Cafe that has survived and even thrived during Covid, thanks to a bit of help from Beyoncé. Carter is author of Reclaiming Your Community: You Don’t Have to Move Out Of Your Neighborhood To Live In A Better One, just out from Berrett-Koehler.Full research and reading list to further delve into the conversation are available at https://Patreon.com/theLFShow   Laura Flanders and Friends Crew:  Laura Flanders, along with Sabrina Artel, Jeremiah Cothren, Veronica Delgado, Janet Hernandez, Jeannie Hopper, Gina Kim, Sarah Miller, Nat Needham, David Neuman, and Rory O’Conner.  FOLLOW Laura Flanders and FriendsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/lauraflandersandfriends/Blueky:  https://bsky.app/profile/lfandfriends.bsky.socialFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/LauraFlandersAndFriends/Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@lauraflandersandfriendsYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFLRxVeYcB1H7DbuYZQG-lgLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/lauraflandersandfriendsPatreon:   https://www.patreon.com/lauraflandersandfriendsACCESSIBILITY - The broadcast edition of this episode is available with closed captioned by clicking here for our YouTube Channel

Democratizing Democracy: Redistricting by the People

Redistricting has the power to shape elections, and this year, it’s more controversial than ever. After a contentious 2020 census, the development of advanced mapping technologies, and a 2019 Supreme Court decision that put partisan gerrymandering outside the scope of federal courts, voting rights advocates contend that racial gerrymandering is rampant—in the south and beyond. In this episode, Laura speaks with redistricting experts from Colorado, Michigan, Texas, and New York who are working to ensure that minority voters have a seat at the table. It’s not too late, they say. New technologies are making it possible for citizens groups to step into the fray and fight for fairer representation.GuestsKhyla D.
