He has more than two decades of experience of working on conflict and post-conflict settings with a focus on Security Sector Reform (SSR); Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) of ex-combatants and arms control. He is particularly interested in the proliferation of small arms and light weapons (SALW) to non-state armed groups. Based at IISS-Europe in Berlin, Wolf-Christian is part of the Conflict, Security, and Development Programme, where he leads a project on the effectiveness of non-military conflict resolution and stabilisation tools, in particular with regard to non-state armed groups. Wolf-Christian has also worked as a consultant for different development organisations including the World Bank, the European Union, UNDP, GIZ and KfW, advising on recovery and stabilisation programs in conflict and post-conflict environments. 'What has been the effect on the civil population?' and more get answered! Ali Fowle is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and investigative journalist focused on international news and current affairs. She specialises in long form investigative journalism for broadcast, often working in remote and hostile environments. Ali focuses mostly on conflict, human rights and civil disobedience in the Asia Pacific region where she was based between 2008-2021 and has worked extensively on stories about extractive industries, illicit trade and trafficking, surveillance, justice and press freedom. Ali’s work has won multiple global media prizes. In 2022 she was shortlisted for the Orwell Prize for Journalism for her coverage of the Myanmar coup. The same year she won several other awards including a Walkley Award for Excellence in Journalism and a Sigma Award for an investigation into surveillance, interrogation and torture in Myanmar. Her documentary “Myanmar: State of Fear” was added to the Shadid curriculum for ethical journalism as an example of “complex and outstanding ethical-decision making”. In 2018 she was part of the BBC team which received a Peabody Award for coverage of the Plight of the Rohingya. Originally from Azerbaijan, Dr. Alieva founded the Center for National and International Studies, a think tank in Baku, but was forced to leave her home country during the 2014 government crackdown on activists, journalists, and scholars. Dr. Alieva’s extensive academic experience includes fellowships at Harvard University, UC Berkeley, and the Woodrow Wilson Center’s Kennan Institute. She has also held roles at the NATO Defense College in Rome, the Robert Bosch Academy in Berlin, and the Institute Fur Kulturwissenschaften in Vienna. Dr. Alieva has advised major international organizations such as EBRD, BP, and NATO’s Partnership for Peace Consortium. In this episode, we are joined by the acclaimed Doug Livermore, a man with extensive experience in active combat and within US intelligence services. Mr Livermore engages in an in-depth discussion regarding the evolution of the Ukraine war, the impact of increased drone warfare and the risks and solutions surrounding Russian aggression in the Baltic Sea and Africa. Doug Livermore is currently the Senior Vice President of Solution Engineering at CenCore and Deputy Commander in The United States Army. Prior to this, he served as a Special Forces officer and Special Operations Detachment Deputy Commander with the Maryland Army National Guard's Special Operations Detachment, aligned to North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) area of operations. He has served two tours in Iraq (2005-07) as a U.S. Army infantry platoon leader, battalion assistant operations officer, and heavy weapons company executive officer in the 10th Mountain Division. Mr Livermore also led elements during combat and other sensitive operations across Africa, Afghanistan, Congo, Mali and Libya. He left active duty in 2014 and joined the National Guard in 2017, initially serving as a Plans Officer.
