[Interview] Fluids Get Really Weird In Space. NIAC 2024

Fluids behave very differently in space. We can make good use of it. For example, a recent NIAC grant was awarded to investigate a Magnetohydrodynamic Drive for Hydrogen and Oxygen Production in Mars Transfer. This is a system that should provide breathing oxygen for a journey to Mars made out of water with no moving parts in it. 🟣 Guest: Dr Alvaro Romero-Calvo https://ae.gatech.edu/directory/person/alvaro-romero-calvo πŸ‘‰ More about the NIAC project: https://www.nasa.gov/general/magnetohydrodynamic-drive-for-hydrogen-and-oxygen-production/ πŸ¦„ Support us on Patreon: https://patreon.com/universetoday πŸ“š Suggest books in the book club: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/1198440-universe-today-book-club 00:00 Intro 01:39 Water in space 09:18 The NIAC project 28:31 Nightmares in space 35:56 Propulsion 44:19 Current obsessions 51:53 Final thoughts πŸ“Ί VIDEO VERSION https://youtu.be/fnKwzi7nvOU πŸ“° EMAIL NEWSLETTER Read by 60,000 people every Friday. [Interview] Observing Black Holes With Just One Telescope

Previously the only way to image black holes was with the Event Horizon Telescope, a combination of many radio telescopes across the globe. It is complicated and time-consuming. But with Vera Rubin going online soon, there might be a simpler way to observe black holes with a single telescope using a really clever method. 🟣 Guest: Dr Matt O'Dowd https://www.mattodowd.space/ πŸ“œ Resolving the Vicinity of Supermassive Black Holes with Gravitational Microlensing https://arxiv.org/pdf/2210.10500 πŸ‘‰ PBS Spacetime https://www.youtube.com/@pbsspacetime πŸ¦„ Support us on Patreon: https://patreon.com/universetoday πŸ“š Suggest books in the book club: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/1198440-universe-today-book-club 00:00 Intro 01:45 Observing gravitationally lensed quasars 12:58 Why Vera Rubin 19:04 Best case scenario 23:22 What do we know about black holes 38:21 Current obsessions 44:31 Final thoughts πŸ“Ί VIDEO VERSION https://youtu.be/m2xtVfpfeWQ πŸ“° EMAIL NEWSLETTER Read by 60,000 people every Friday.
