Does free will exist? Alex Malpass vs Tim Stratton hosted by Andy Kind

This week on Unbelievable we return to the topic of free will. Following the debate between Ben Shapiro and Alex O'Connor, Christian apologist Tim Stratton got in touch to say he took issue with some of Alex's arguments against free will. Indeed Tim noted that Alex agreed with Ben Shapiro that if there is no God, then there is no free will. Tim Stratton develops the argument in a spirited debate with atheist philosopher Alex Malpass, hosted by Andy Kind. Alex Malpass has a PhD in philosophy from the University of Bristol, and these days specialises in philosophy of religion, but also metaphysics and logic more generally. He runs a podcast called Thoughtology and an infrequently updated blog called the Use of Reason. Alex Malpass has published in various philosophical journals including the International Journal for the Philosophy of Religion. For Alex Malpass's book: History of Philosophical and Formal Logic: From Aristotle to Tarski go here Tim Stratton holds a graduate degree in Christian Apologetics from Biola University and a PhD in theology from North-West University. He is a professor at Trinity College of the Bible and Theological Seminary and the author of Human Freedom, Divine Knowledge, and Mere Molinism. He has also recently contributed a chapter to a book entitled, Faith Examined: New Arguments for Persistent Questions, Essays in Honor of Dr. Frank Turek. Stratton has coauthored multiple academic journal articles (most notably with J.P. Moreland) related to the topics of libertarian freedom, the problems of evil, and also responding to the Hiddenness Argument. To find Stratton’s popular level work, find his videos on YouTube at FreeThinking Ministries and his blogs at FreeThinking Ministries.com or FreeThinkInc.org. His X handle is @TSXpress. Can Christians do comedy? with Milton Jones, Allan Finnegan and Andy Kind

In this episode, top British comedian and writer Milton Jones and Baptist minister, comedian and semi-finalist of Britain's Got Talent, Allan Finnegan, offer a captivating behind-the-scenes glimpse into their world. From tackling ego and humility to navigating the rollercoaster of highs and lows, the discussion hosted by comedian and Unbelievable host Andy Kind delves into the intricate dance between comedy, faith and meaning. The paradox of not caring too much about opinions while needing audience approval takes centre stage, as the comedians share their tales of failure, emphasising the resilience needed to keep going. Small moments take on immense significance, and creating meaningful experiences for audiences becomes a driving force. The conversation explores the nuanced relationship between comedy and the church, addressing the challenges of meeting diverse expectations. Post-pandemic shifts in comedy and concerns about cancel culture add a contemporary twist. The intersection of comedy and faith sparks thought-provoking questions about its mission and potential to convey a narrative of hope, joy, peace, freedom, and love. The conversation wraps up with reflections on truth personified and the pivotal role of authenticity in comedy. • Subscribe to the Unbelievable? podcast: https://pod.link/267142101 • More shows, free eBook & newsletter: https://premierunbelievable.com • For live events: http://www.unbelievable.live • For online learning: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/training • Support us in the USA: http://www.premierinsight.org/unbelievableshow • Support us in the rest of the world: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/donate

Ruth Jackson hosts this special edition of Premier Unbelievable? with Oxford scholar and C. S Lewis expert Dr. Alister McGrath. Lewis - Jack to his friends - was a 20th Century British writer and lay theologian who is arguably one of the most influential voices in modern Christianity. On November 22nd 1963, Clive Staples Lewis died in Oxford, England. Ten years ago, McGrath’s definitive biography C.S.Lewis A Life - Eccentric Genius Reluctant Prophet was published giving readers a glimpse of McGrath’s extensive research and a thorough chronological examination of Lewis’ correspondence and archival materials to present a new picture of Lewis’s life. Dr. McGrath continues to share his insights on Lewis weekly in The C.S. Lewis Podcast hosted by Ruth Jackson. 60 years after his death, Ruth Jackson puts a variety of listener’s questions to Dr. McGrath including is there an expiry date on C.S. What is the purpose of the universe? with Richard Swinburne, Philip Goff & Vince Vitale

Richard Swinburne and Philip Goff debate why are we here? Is it time we moved on from both God and Atheism, as Goff suggests in his new book Why? The Purpose of the Universe? Unbelievable Host Vince Vitale guides us through as Goff argues that the traditional God is a bad explanation of cosmic purpose. Instead, he explores a range of alternative possibilities for accounting for cosmic purpose, from the speculation that we live in a computer simulation to the hypothesis that the universe itself is a conscious mind.  Richard Swinburne is a Fellow of the British Academy, and has received honorary doctorates from three overseas universities. He was Professor of the Philosophy of Religion at the University of Oxford from 1985 until 2002. Since then he has continued to lecture extensively in many countries. He is best known for his trilogy on the philosophy of theism -The Coherence of Theism, The Existence of God, and Faith and Reason. Richard Swinburne and James Sterba are launching a new debate Why would a good God allow so much suffering? early in 2024. Dr Philip Goff is Professor of Philosophy at Durham University. His research focuses on consciousness and the ultimate nature of reality. Goff is best known for defending panpsychism, the view that consciousness pervades the universe and is a fundamental feature of it.  Richard’s papers 'The existence of God', 'The problem of evil' are accessible on his website: https://users.ox.ac.uk/~orie0087/framesetpublications.shtml and his books are available here: https://global.oup.com/academic/product/is-there-a-god-9780199580439?cc=gb&lang=en& Book: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Why-Purpose-Universe-Philip-Goff/dp/0198883765 Website: https://philipgoffphilosophy.com/ Podcast: https://www.youtube.com/@MindChat Social Media: https://twitter.com/Philip_Goff • Subscribe to the Unbelievable? podcast: https://pod.link/267142101 • More shows, free eBook & newsletter: https://premierunbelievable.com • For live events: http://www.unbelievable.live • For online learning: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/training • Support us in the USA: http://www.premierinsight.org/unbelievableshow • Support us in the rest of the world: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/donate

Classic Replay: Unbelievable? Is Open Theism a heresy? James White vs John Sanders

From 2016: John E Sanders is one among a number of evangelical theologians such as Greg Boyd who have embraced Open Theism – the view that God does not necessarily have foreknowledge of all future events and that the future is open. Many evangelicals believe Open Theism is a heresy – denying the omniscience of God and going against Biblical teaching. James White of Alpha and Omega ministries believes Open Theism is a serious heresy and defends a Calvinist view of God’s sovereignty – that God has predestined all future events for his glory. They debate the issues.
