The PoliticsGirl Podcast
Meidas Media Network, Leigh McGowan
American Democracy is not promised to us and, with all the forces working against it, saving it will take a level of work most people aren’t ready for. The Politics Girl Podcast is here to give people a reason to care and a reason to fight. Our goal is to inspire. To instill in people a true understanding of what this country COULD be, if the right people were fighting for it, and what it WILL be if they don’t. It’s a political podcast yes, but more than that, it’s a podcast about America’s potential, where one passionate, and slightly mouthy, immigrant attempts to motivate the country to become what it promised to be but, so far, has yet to become. You’ll leave more knowledgeable, more engaged, and more sure that you, personally, can make a difference to the future of American democracy. Everyone’s got a little time for that right? Subscribe for new episodes every Tuesday. We’re in a fight for our country. We sure as hell better know what we’re fighting for. xo

Israel/Gaza: A Conversation with David Rothkopf
The crisis in the Middle East, like so many issues that truly matter, is complicated and nuanced and simply won’t fit on a bumper sticker. It’s essential that we look at the whole picture and move beyond who needs to be punished (and many do) to set a goal of creating a place of peace and stability. This is also not an isolated issue. Governments around the world are shifting to the far right and supporting each other as they do it. So, whether it’s Putin, Netanyahu, Hamas or Trump, they’re all looking out for number one, and we need to be supporting alternatives who want everyone to succeed, not simply the select few. At the end of the day we need to hold two ideas in our heads at once. Palestinian people deserve a state of their own, without Israeli occupation, and Israel deserves to exist in safety and security in the midst of a hostile region. It’s an incredibly difficult needle to thread, but a peaceful coexistence is what anyone who believes in the rights of humanity should want. Please join us for an important conversation. **As always, if you enjoy what we do, please consider SUBSCRIBING to PoliticsGirl Premium. Is This the End of America?: A Conversation with Journalist Ahmed Baba
Happy New Year! Welcome to 2024, the year we either destroy or save America. This is it. Make it or break it. To give us a sense of the stakes, I’m joined by journalist Ahmed Baba who recently did an amazing article for the Independent about the the “conservative promise” of Project 2025. Project 2025 is a roadmap to fundamentally reshape the federal government into the image of the far right once a Republican president takes office. We keep talking about the horse race between two people when we should be talking about the choice between two Americas. The consequences for the rule of law, democracy, and justice are all on the line. So as we sit at the top 2024 and I want you to know what will happen if we elect anyone who will implement Project 2025. To be clear, so far that’s every single Republican candidate. One Person Can Make a Difference: A Conversation with David Bender
We’re about to enter probably one of the toughest years in our country’s history. A year that could quite honestly end the American experiment. But America has been through crises before and people pulled us through. So the question is, what are YOU going to do to fight for what’s right in a time when so much is wrong? I’ve asked my friend, and lifelong political activist, David Bender to join us today because he’s lived and worked through so many of America’s ups and downs and he’s fired up to do it again. This is a conversation worth hearing. As always, if you enjoy what we do, please consider SUBSCRIBING to PoliticsGirl Premium. Rigged: A Conversation with Robert Reich
As Supreme Court Justice, Louis Brandeis said, “America has a choice. We can either have great wealth in the hands of a few, or we can have democracy, but we can’t have both.” There’s a shift happening in the American consciousness right now. Where the idea we all bought into, that idea that if we just work hard enough we’ll make it, is starting to feel like a bit of a scam. This concept of “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” is beginning to look like a cruel joke and the conceit that the struggles so many Americans face just to make ends meet is somehow a result of our own actions or shortcomings, rather than acknowledging we’re actually living in an oppressive system rigged against us is really starting to chafe. Join me and the illustrious Robert Reich as we discuss the economy, the American dream, and what we, the American public, can do to make it.As always, if you enjoy what we do, please consider SUBSCRIBING to PoliticsGirl Premium. Never Give AI the Nuclear Codes: A Conversation with Ross Andersen
As computers get smarter, who do we want regulating them? Who do we want programming them and, ultimately, who do we want leading our country and military response when AI is in the mix? If we get this wrong, how we feel about things like taxes, religion and racism will be the least of our problems. To have this essential conversation, I’m joined today by Ross Andersen. Ross is a staff writer at The Atlantic, where he covers science, technology, and culture. I’m having him on to discuss his article called “Never Give Artificial Intelligence the Nuclear Codes". This is big deal stuff and something we have to consider not only as citizens of our world, but also as citizens of a powerful nuclear superpower going into an election year. This is kind of a scary episode, but it’s also an incredibly important, and one I think is really worth your time. From Homeless to Mayor: A Conversation with Konstantine Anthony
As we come up on Thanksgiving and the holiday season, I started to think of all the things in my life I was thankful for and I kept returning to having a roof over my head. America’s homelessness crisis has become extraordinary and housing has becomes out of reach for so many Americans. Not just in the big cities, but all over the country. Yes, it’s partially a mental health issue, but it’s also a cost of living issue and greed issue. Everything has become too expensive, we don’t make enough money, and we can’t afford to live like we used to. Sometimes that means we can’t afford to live anywhere at all. Someone who knows this feeling first hand is Konstantine Anthony, the Mayor of Burbank, candidate for LA County Supervisor and former unhoused person himself. Join us for a terrific conversation about not only turning your life around, and to go from needing help to helping others, but what we can do to be that helping hand in this increasingly difficult world. Protect our Votes: A Conversation with Nevada Secretary of State, Cisco Aguilar
It’s election day in America and all over the country people are choosing the direction they want their country to go. While citizens exercise their right to vote, we know there are people actively looking to undermine and disrupt the process to their own ends. Which is why we can no longer afford to be reactive about our democracy. We must be strategic. There are people out here trying to destroy it, so we have to be working just as hard to save it. Nowhere will that work be more obvious in 2024 than in battleground states. Join me and Nevada Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar as we talk about the work he’s doing in Nevada, and with other Secretaries of State, to get strategic about protecting our votes and our democracy now, and for the future.
