Long Haul Covid [19:17] Robert says: Any ideas on treatment strategies for long haul covid. Having daily bouts of fatigue 1 month out as well as muscle aches and brain fog, in addition you can't workout as it makes things worse. I'm carnivores mostly at this time. I'm 70years old 6 ft tall was 202lbs a month ago down to 186lbs now. Thanks very much!! 2. Balancing Blood Sugar During Pregnancy [23:56] Lindsey says: Hi Robb and Nicki, I've learned so much from both of you! I'm 39, 34 weeks pregnant (3rd child) and having blood sugar issues for the first time. A bit of background before pregnancy #3 (I can't help but think all of this may be relevant!): Just before pregnancy, I was at my highest weight at 190 but beginning to lose weight. I have primarily eaten a paleo diet (meat, veggies, no grains, no dairy, my only sugars were occasionally from honey, dates, maple syrup and a very occasional glass of wine) since 2016 with the exception of a short run of stressful family events happening in late 2018, including moving, when our lifestyle sort of took a backseat and wine and fast food intake went up, which is when I gained all of the weight. When I had trouble losing the weight, I saw a functional medicine doc fall 2019 and she did wonders through lab work and FODMAP to help me figure out my hormones were off- high estrogen, high cortisol- I had food intolerances (grains, dairy, sugar, alcohol, and coffee) and my B vitamins were low from malabsorption. Just as I was able to get things back under control, COVID happened. My family tried to maintain our re-established paleo lifestyle and exercised more (we also wondered why this wasn't being shared all over media?!) even through moving again. So, just as I'm beginning to lose weight in 2021, I find out I'm pregnant (yea!). I have felt the absolute best this pregnancy- working out, eating mostly paleo, but adding in whole wheat toast with avocado or nut butter in the morning after eating a protein to add calories (the bread didn't seem to bother me), drinking LMNT on days I work out, etc. I had COVID in January and a stomach bug at the beginning of February and then realized I was dehydrated (drank more LMNT which helped me so much!). Within a week after that, I needed to take my 1-hour glucose test. I could feel I was bombing it the whole hour- my body didn't know what to do with 50 grams of sugar. My blood glucose was 153 from that blood draw (the marker they use here in San Antonio is 140). My doctor wanted me to take the 3-hour glucose test, but I knew fasting and with even more sugar, I was doomed. I asked if I could skip ahead to glucose monitoring. I'm currently on day 3 (numbers below) and here is what I'm curious about: why/how can I have high fasting numbers but normal numbers through the day. Also, on day 3, what are some possible causes of the lower fasting number- was it the potassium in the LMNT? Just drinking more water? Taking out the bread? Not eating dessert like I did the day before (ha)? Are there any other changes y'all recommend? day 1: fasting: 104; after breakfast: 108; after lunch: 113; after dinner: 112   notes: date night- ate 1/3 of a creme brulee day 2: fasting 103; AB: 101; AL 102; AD 114  notes: tried apple cider vinegar in water (1tbsp:1/2 cup) before bed and today I drank LMNT after not drinking it for about 4 days (didn't sound good/couldn't get it down). Felt great after drinking it! day 3: fasting: 88; AB: 114 Sorry this is incredibly long! Thanks for your help. Metabolic Syndrome and Cancer, Bingeing Whole Foods, Tired Vegetarian | THRR102

Make your health an act of rebellion. Join The Healthy Rebellion Please Subscribe and Review: Apple Podcasts | RSS Submit your questions for the podcast here News topic du jour: Association between metabolic syndrome and 13 types of cancer in Catalonia: A matched case-control study   Podcast Questions: 1. Hyper palatable perception of normal whole foods Alex says: Really odd case here: A good friend of mine has struggled with binge eating to the point of burping up food for years.  A few years ago at my urging he got tested for sibo(for a collection of other symptoms) and was..very positive.  Now 3 years on he's way better but still doesn't experience palate fatigue with whole food meals unless he restricts to pure carnivore with no seasoning but salt.  What could be going on here? 2. Tired Vegetarian Amerra says: Robb, I am reaching out to you because I have no idea who I should talk to. I have endometriosis and just about 10 years ago read that going vegetarian would help my symptoms. I eased my way in and became a vegetarian. My symptoms did seem to alleviate and initially I felt great. I continued to be a vegetarian. I had two children (2016 & 2018). I understand that being a mom can be tiring however, I'm completely exhausted. I recently stumbled across someone talking about  the lion and the carnivore diets. They stated many of their health issues went into remission. I started researching fatigue and vegetarianism. There seems to be a connection. The problem is, I've been eating this way for so long that the idea of eating meat seriously grosses me out. This is not a moral issue for me or any other connection-just I've eaten this way so long. What do you recommend? Do you have any resources? Are there any health issues in addition to the obvious fatigue that I should get checked for? I would greatly appreciate anything you can share. I did speak with a doctor about this and was evaluated for sleep apnea. The test came back with negative results. After this my doctor stopped following up. Also, to give further information, I am 36 years old. I have no other known health issues. I exercise frequently (although I have a broken back which prevents the type of intense exercise I used to do and love). Baby's Poor Digestion, Beef Liver Sourcing, Essential Tremor | THRR101

Join The Healthy Rebellion Please Subscribe and Review: Apple Podcasts | RSS Submit your questions for the podcast here News topic du jour: https://twitter.com/covid_clarity/status/1498360349975842821 Podcast Questions: 1. Baby's poor digestion [17:18] Taylor says: Hello, Nikki and Robb! I was hoping you may have some advice other than probiotics, since that seems to be the only advice I get on this topic and they don't seem to help. I have a 9 month old baby with a very sensitive digestive system. We did everything "right" when it came to introducing good bacteria: natural home birth, no antibiotics, EBF until introducing solids. I have to cut dairy while breastfeeding because he has a CMPI. Since introducing solids, he is only able to handle meat, eggs, fish, and avacado. Anything else gives him extremely painful gas and he will be up all night screaming. Should I continue to try to introduce new foods or hold off until a certain period of time to let his gut heal/develop? His current daily food intake will look something like this: egg fried in lard, sausage patty, avacado, fish roe, ground beef, chicken thigh, over cooked white potato, and orange slices on the rind so he just gets the juice and no fiber. Thank you for any advice you may have! 2. Beef Liver [21:02 Chris says: Robb, I like to eat beef liver a couple times per week. In the states, I was able to find grass-fed sources, either locally or through US Wellness Meats. However, I recently moved to Okinawa, Japan with the military and haven’t found any local sources for grass-Fed or companies that will ship here. The grocery store carries frozen liver slices from Skylark meats, but they’re not grass-fed. For that matter, I can’t find any information on how Skylark raises their cattle, so presumably it’s a large commercial operation. So, am I better off ordering some grass-fed beef liver capsules from a reputable company or do you think the liver from Skylark is okay, albeit suboptimal? 3. Essential Tremor [26:07] Jenny says: Hello, Robb and Nicki - Thank you for providing truthful and unbiased information on health.  I love your podcast and the Healthy Rebellion group. I am a healthy, 50 year old female.  I feel great but I have Essential Tremor.  I also have Celiac Disease.  Interestingly, I only know one other person with Celiac Disease, and he also has Essential Tremor.  Most of the time, my tremor does not bother me too much, and I have learned how to deal with it.  However, there are certain situations I am in once in a while where I would like to be able to reduce the tremor in my hands.  I have to do a pistol qualification course four times a year for my job, and I would love to reduce my tremor before the test.  I am drug tested for work and cannot risk using any CBD products, which is too bad because I have heard they can help with tremors.   I have a few questions for you. 1.) In your research regarding Essential Tremor, have you found a link between people with Celiac Disease also having Essential Tremor? 2.) Do you have any suggestions for reducing tremors before an event as described above? 3.) Is there any hope for completing healing Essential Tremor aka getting rid of it for good? Thank you. DNA based diets....good science or rip-off? [27:30] Chad says: First, gotta say, I absolutely love you two. Informative, humor, frank discussion...what's not to love. Been following for quite a while now and have no plans to stop. Started listening to the Paleo Solution back in 2010 and haven't stopped listening since. Anyways...I was wondering...thoughts on DNA testing to figure out your ideal diet. An ad for XXXXXX popped up so I was checking it out and made me wonder if such a test has any legitimacy or is it just a cash grab? Thanks! 2. Long term keto [33:47] Dan says: Hello - do you see any real hazard to long term keto? I’ve heard of thyroid and other hormonal issues being possible, loss of ability to digest carbs, developing food sensitivities, etc. If so, will a 1 day/week carb RE feed help with this? Thanks! 3. Essential Tremor [38:21] Art says: Hi Robb and Nicki, I heard you briefly mention essential tremor in episode 96. Me too. Supposedly, this condition’s aggravated by eating cooked meat because of a neurotoxin, harmane. Might there be a supplement or some other substance out there that would take the edge off harmane? Training While Calorie Restricted, Getting Enough Protein, Kids and Lockdown | THRR099

Make your health an act of rebellion. Join The Healthy Rebellion Please Subscribe and Review: Apple Podcasts | RSS Submit your questions for the podcast here News topic du jour: Ensuring planetary survival: the centrality of organic carbon in balancing the multifunctional nature of soils "Not only do soils provide 98.7% of the calories consumed by humans, they also provide numerous other functions upon which planetary survivability closely depends. However, our continuously increasing focus on soils for biomass provision (food, fiber, and energy) through intensive agriculture is rapidly degrading soils and diminishing their capacity to deliver other vital functions. These tradeoffs in soil functionality – the increased provision of one function at the expense of other critical planetary functions – are the focus of this review." Podcast Questions: 1. Calorie Restriction While Training Hard [6:58] From Maryann in THR I just got in from my best long run. Ever. It was a 12 mile run: 2 Repeats of 2 miles easy / 4 miles at half marathon pace. I want to thank Ryan Baxter for introducing me to Steph Gaudreau and the concept that too much calorie restriction while training hard is a mistake. My daily calorie intake gradually increased from 1,200 to between 1,400 and 1,800. My performance has improved and my weight / size has stayed the same. It's easy to see how so many female athletes get their heads so screwed up. 2. How To Get Volume of Protein, and The Magic of LMNT [10:01] Dave says: Hi Robb, I'm trying to figure out how to get enough grams of protein in my diet, and it seems almost impossible without massively overeating.   I'm about 210 pounds, and my ideal weight with healthy composition is probably in the 190-200 range.   Depending on who's advice you follow in the paleo/keto/IF/carnivore community I should be getting at least 100g of protein, and possibly as much as 200g by some accounts.   Over the last month I've been tracking macros carefully and eating basically nothing but meat, eggs, cheese, above-ground veggies, and some (good) fat.  But it's rare that I get more than about 80g of protein even when I try, and if I do get much more than that I feel over-full the entire day.   I've made a point of trying to see if I could get 150g of protein, and eating almost nothing but meat, still couldn't do it. Is it actually feasible to meet the recommendations?  The only ways I see to do it are to either drink gobs of whey powder (which would be rather unenjoyable) or workout so much and so intensely that my body would happily double up on calorie intake, which seems rather impractical as a fully-employed 53 year old .  Am I missing something? I'd love to get your perspective on this, and please accept my apologies if you've talked about this on your podcast or other forums-- I'm still catching up on several of them. Also, LMNT is amazing and has changed my life (I truly mean that).  I'm an avid mountain biker, and I use to routinely get cramps, sometimes quite horribly.  I tried everything. The only thing that helped, but only to a degree was using some salt tablets.  But after starting using LMNT this summer, they're completely gone.  It's amazing.  But even more:  I used to also routinely have heart palpitations (not the dangerous kind, but still unnerving), as well as restless leg syndrome.   Both are gone now.  And after I made the connection, I've noticed that if I feel the palpitations or the beginning of restless leg, within 30 minutes of taking LMNT they're gone.  That's happened frequently enough that I'm now sure it's causal.  I've literally never seen or heard anyone make the connection between RLS and salts/electrolytes, but it clearly mattered for me and seems plausible in retrospect given the role of electrolyte deficiency in nervous system and muscular dysfunction.  In any case, THANK YOU!!! Dave (By the way, since writing this a few days ago, the insight I had was that I was adding a fair amount of fat as well, which makes me full, so this week I’m reducing the amount of added fats (e.g., butter, clean Mayo, etc) to see if that makes room for more meat.) 3. Kids and Lockdown [16:56] Jen says: I was listening the new year's podcast re:kid's development and covid lockdowns.I  work in prevention and mental health awareness. The lockdowns have been awful and the lack of shared air community has been devastating on so many. But I worry about the rising cry coming from the education and occupational health sectors regarding "lags" in kid's development during cvid. This lament is (at least in my personal experience)  spawning conversations on how this proves that homeschooling is defunct and school choice shouldn't be an option-obviously parents can't teach their kids anything, right?  "Experts" showing up and telling the rest of the country that the people in an area are too stupid to handle themselves and their kids is a national legacy (Shenandoah Natl Park, the Chicago Projects) . While the detriment of lock downs needs to be explored, I worry about this rallying cry and what exactly it may mean for our kid's over all futures. Just my (crazy) two cents. Bastardization of the Scientific Method, Brain Fog, Baby Veganism Danger | THRR098

Make your health an act of rebellion. Join The Healthy Rebellion Please Subscribe and Review: Apple Podcasts | RSS Submit your questions for the podcast here News topic du jour: Why the Bastardization of the Scientific Method Is so Dangerous One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.” ― Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark   Podcast Questions:   1. Brain Fog [30:01] Ryan says: Hi Rob, I’ve been noticing more over the past few years the phenomenon of brain fog. It seems to most often set in after eating breakfast which is a rotation of Eggs, Sausage, and Cheese with the occasional bread and Oatmeal. Plain eggs is the most frequent breakfast. My question is: Are there other foods besides gluten known to cause this fatigue/fogginess (like eggs and dairy) and how long does it typically take to set in? Most mornings when I experience the fogginess it is accompanied by an irritable mood. Important to note that this was never an issue until after high school when my diet changed to include significantly less breads, often going a week or more between consuming glutens and obviously getting older too. Thanks P.S Maybe I see you at Costco sometime.   2. The Next Generation - Veganism [35:32] Janeen says: A topic I do not hear addressed much is that with veganism on the rise, what is going to happen to the children born to vegans?  I have a friend who is an RN and is an internationally certified lactation consultant (or some such title) and she says the babies of vegans are smaller, have lower APGAR scores, do not seem to thrive as well as non-vagan babies. But this type of information never makes it to the news. Those babies were denied so much nutrition while developing, and once born, the mother's breast milk is less than ideal.  Will these kids not be able to reach their full potential despite the lack of nutrients that was in their diets? Our 32 year old daughter has been a vegan for 4 years or so and is about to get married. She believes the vegan line that it is a perfectly fine diet.  I have a degree in anthropology and there has never been a healthy vegan society since we came down from the trees.  My daughter does not believe me.  I am and NTP, all I know about nutrition is wrong, according to her. She feels my course was taught by pro-meat eaters and therefore they had an agenda. What will happen to our society if there are not enough intelligent people left to do be able to make the hard, philosophical decisions that need to made to keep this ship floating?   Sponsor: The Healthy Rebellion Radio is sponsored by our electrolyte company, LMNT. Covid Policies, Creatine and Kidney Function, Immunity and Caloric Intake | THRR097

Make your health an act of rebellion. Join The Healthy Rebellion Please Subscribe and Review: Apple Podcasts | RSS Submit your questions for the podcast here News topic du jour:   Dishonesty about masking kids results in insanity To justify masking kids, proponents relied on bio-plausibility, and cited filtration studies, often performed on mannequins. Of course, the physical properties of a mask on a dummy are not the same as asking a child to wear it for prolonged periods of time. If a cloth mask captures 70% of particles or 80%; you still have no idea whether asking a child to wear that fabric mask (and accepting that use will be imperfect) has a net health benefit to that child or others around them. Universities' Covid Policies Defy Science and Reason Parents and students should challenge dogma with data. https://bariweiss.substack.com/p/universities-covid-policies-defy Dr. Marty Makary is a professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. At these institutions of higher learning and thousands more, science is supposedly held in the highest esteem. So where is the scientific support for masking outdoors? Where is the scientific support for constantly testing fully vaccinated young people? Where is the support for the confinement of asymptomatic, young people who test positive for a virus to which they are already immune on a campus of other immune people? The data simply do not justify any of it. For the past two years, this country has imposed extensive, and often unnecessary, restrictions on over 54 million school-age children, even though they are the least likely group to suffer serious consequences of a Covid infection. Instead, we have damaged their education, kept them from seeing human faces, and treated them as vectors without a right to a normal childhood. College students are not the only young people we have harmed. A recent Brown University study found that “children born during the pandemic have significantly reduced verbal, motor, and overall cognitive performance compared to children born pre-pandemic.” The researchers pointed out that families of lower socioeconomic status were most affected. At the same time, adults have been allowed to socialize barefaced at bars, while children outdoors on playgrounds are still masked. This is nothing short of an abuse of power by adults over a defenseless group. Podcast Questions:   1. Creatine and Kidney Function [23:04] Josh says: Hi Robb and Nikki! Thanks for all you do. The information is so helpful and you are both entertaining to listen to. What is your take on crearine supplements and kidney function? Can creatine supplementation decrease kidney function by increasing creatinine levels or is this just a false indicator as some studies have suggested? https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15273072/ https://pediaa.com/difference-between-creatine-and-creatinine/ 2. Immunity and caloric intake [24:52] Daniel says: Hi team! I have been following your work for years and have been a member of the Healthy Rebellion on and off. Recently I have been eating more calories purposely to put on more weight during a strength phase. However, I have noticed that when I am eating more I am feeling more rundown/get sick more often ie sore throat, etc. When I am not eating as much I typically eat in a smaller feeding window and adhere more towards a higher fat/lower carb lifestyle. When you Google ‘immunity and caloric intake’ it literally seems like each clickbait link opposes the other - one says eating less weakens the immune system, the next says the opposite. Do you have any opinion or thoughts on this topic? Are the increased calories causing the body to ‘process more’ and therefore create extra work? Or is there no correlation at all and this is just in my head? For context I am 5’10 74 kg eating ~2800 cals/day to add weight with ~160g protein/day. 38 years old.
