Paralyzed at Home

Do you want to receive the show notes in your inbox? Email thejeffcavinsshow@ascensionpress.com! Check out www.ascensionpress.com/thejeffcavinsshow to view all episodes and show notes. Have you ever been sitting at home bored and restless, feeling like you are going nowhere? Do you pull out your phone, turn on the television, or reach for a drink to numb this restlessness? Your home is supposed to be a place of reflection, intimacy, and growth. But in these moments, it is all too easy to become paralyzed and cease to walk in your vocation. We all have been given 24 hours in a day and as a disciple, you are a steward of that time. Today, Jeff reflects on two Bible passages: Jesus healing a paralyzed man (Luke 5:24) and the faith of the Centurion (Matthew 8:5-13). Through these two passages, Jeff provides 3 things you can do to break free, rise up, and walk. *Snippet from the Show: * We all experience these kinds of paralysis in our life, but it points to something deeper and that is that we cannot get to heaven on our own. We need Jesus, we are paralyzed in terms of our eternal destiny and we desperately need him to help us. SHOWNOTES Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the one who was paralyzed—“I say to you, stand up and take your bed and go to your home.”(Luke 5:24) The Faith of the Centurion When he entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, appealing to him and saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, in terrible distress.” And he said to him, “I will come and cure him.” The centurion answered, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only speak the word, and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and the slave does it.” When Jesus heard him, he was amazed and said to those who followed him, “Truly I tell you, in no one[d] in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and will eat with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the heirs of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; let it be done for you according to your faith.” And the servant was healed in that hour. (Matthew 8:5-13) 3 Things You Can Do To Rise Up and Walk Identify your vocation, father, mother, husband or wife, single, priest, deacon. What area of your vocation are you continually sitting in the lazy boy instead of walking in your call? Pick a good book and start reading it when you would otherwise be watching squirrels roller skate on Youtube. Are their any habits that you are caught in that are costing you big time? TV, eating. Exchange this for bible reading or adoration. Resources The Book “Unbound” by Neal Lozano The Great Adventure BibleSupport The Jeff Cavins Show (Your Catholic Bible Study Podcast)

The Ultimate Thanksgiving

Everyone who finds himself in a dilemma intuitively turns to God and makes promises whether they are empty or sincere. When we discover that we are fine, we often ignore our promises and may even come to blame God as the cause in the first place. Today, Jeff dives into Scripture and shares the prescribed way to give God thanks for all that he has given us, especially when he has helped us through a perilous time. Maybe you are going through a great trial right now and the last thing on your mind is Thanksgiving. Take 30 minutes to listen and discover the ultimate thanksgiving that has stood the test of time. Your holiday season may become a little bit brighter. Snippet from the Show: We offer up thanksgiving to God in the Mass and celebrate the victory of our risen Lord. This victory is our victory as we are joined with him as his body. And everytime we enter into the Mass with a sense of plight, we should exit with praise and thanksgiving in our hearts and on our lips. 3 Keys to Rebuild a Shattered Life!

It feels like your life is shattered and you don’t know how to rebuild it from the rubble. Does this sound like you? This feeling can happen to anyone at anytime. Whether it’s triggered by a catastrophic event or creeps in like a slow leak, we can take heart in knowing that we’re not alone. In fact, there are a lot of biblical stories where lives were shattered, and rebuilt. Jeff walks us through the exile of the Israelites to Babylon. They lived shattered lives as captives for seventy years until, “God stirred up the heart of Cyrus, king of Persia” (Ezra 1:1) who allowed them to return to Jerusalem. They returned in three waves. Each attempted to rebuild their shattered lives in different ways, and each one is vital to our own struggles. Beware of Lukewarm Christianity!

In America, most of us do not have any big needs. As a result, it becomes easy to think God is not needed, because it seems like we can provide everything for ourselves. We become cafeteria believers, people who believe what they like, and reject what they do not. In today’s episode, Jeff says we need to make sure we don’t become so self-reliant that we feel like we don’t need God. Beware of lukewarm Christianity! Becoming Dust Jackets for Truth: The Art of Storytelling!

Mastering the art of storytelling is an extremely effective way to spread truth. Spoiler alert! Jeff talks about the popular dystopian book, Fahrenheit 451. In it, scholars who memorize books in the hopes that they will be written down again call themselves “dust jackets for books”. We too, are “dust jackets for books”, especially when it comes to the Bible. We are responsible for remembering important parts of the Bible so that we can share them with others, especially our kids and grandkids.
