In this rich conversation, poet-chaplain David Tensen and Catherine explore what true eldering looks like in an age hungry for maturity, belonging, and wisdom. David encourages mature believers to embrace the challenge of authentic eldering through intentional decentering. This means decentering anything that demands center-stage - including ourselves, the ways we see God, the need to be constantly heard, our knowledge, denial of death, and materialism. David names the ache of a lack of eldering for so many, especially in the west. We’ve become long-lived, prosperous, information saturated, yet elder-poor. He invites us into practices that form “big, generous (fat) souls”—people who listen deeply, companion others, and make others feel safe, seen, and not judged. When we decenter our need to be heard, we create room for inner healing and spiritual transformation to unfold in those we love. David also discusses “decentering God”—not removing God, but moving our limited ideas of God out of the way so we can perceive God more and more accurately. Here we can see Trinity in a perichoretic dance—space at the center, room for wonder, union, and identity in Christ that doesn’t crowd out others.
