HM 35- Following After God's Dreams with JJ Heller
Fifteen years into her marriage and her music career, JJ Heller opens up about how she has followed God throughout the ups and downs of the life of an independent musician. When she first started out in music, she believed that by not signing to a label she was choosing a life of obscurity. After some national exposure on the show So You Think You Can Dance, JJ’s songs started getting air time on Christian radio stations and she has continued to connect with listeners, creating multiple albums with her husband Dave. She shares the background story of how she let go of her own dreams to play basketball in college and learned to follow after God’s dreams for her and the music she now writes. As a musician who travels and now a mom of two, JJ doesn’t have a strict morning routine. Instead, she focusing on allowing space for the Holy Spirit to direct her in how she needs to connect with God day by day. Now, after a successful start as a novelist, Kristy also shares about verse mapping which is a way to study and research scripture to go deeper with your faith. This interest came out of her own deep need to read and understand scripture. Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith is a medical doctor, wife, and mother to two boys. As a busy working mom, she struggled with the busyness that came along with the blessings. “A lot of the things that were giving me the most pressure were blessings I’d prayed for… my marriage, my kids, my career. They definitely weren’t things I was going to give up, so it was a matter of looking at how can I find rest in the midst of all this busyness. Because the busyness from the blessings wasn’t going away.” Using her unique perspective as a medical doctor, she researched rest and how we can connect with God’s plan for rest. Host Kat Lee talks with working mom and author Jessica Turner who knows what it feels like to reach her limits. She takes her experience as a mom of three kids working two jobs and shares boundaries and habits she’s developed to thrive instead of merely survive. “When you’re thriving, you don’t feel like there’s constantly something that is falling through the cracks. You don’t feel exhausted and overwhelmed all the time. It’s a place of satisfaction at work, in our homes, in our families and marriage. It’s about contentment, and that looks different for everyone.” We talk about ways to simplify the busy times in our lives, manage the mental load we carry, the importance of self-care and making time for yourself.
