Today on the Take on Board podcast, Helga interviews Sandy Bell.Sandy is the chair of the Queen Elizabeth Centre and Early Parenting Centre. She was previously a board member at the Queen Victoria Women's Centre Trust, YWCA Victoria and YWCA Australia, Social Housing Victoria and Bass Coast Health.Sandy holds over 25 years experience in the health and human services industry, initially as a clinician and in senior roles of both public health services and the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services.She's currently director of strategy and planning at the Royal Women's Hospital. Sandy has more than 20 years experience as a director and chair on a range of public sector and not for profit boards.She's a graduate of the AICD with an extensive understanding of the role of the board director in both corporate and clinical governance.Helga first met Sandy when they were on the board of YWCA Victoria, which was her first board. Courageous questions in the board room with Llewellyn Prain - Episode 4
Llewellyn Prain is currently a Board member at Western Water, the Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, the Public Transport Ombudsman, and the Disability Services Board. And she's previously been a Board member of Western Regional Health Centre and CoHealth.She's worked as a lawyer in senior strategy and policy roles and she's run her own business. Her zone of genius is in helping to develop and communicate policy in a range of areas including emergency management, health, and transport.Llewellyn was the first woman to Chair the Board of the Western Region Health Centre. And she helped to lead the merger process that created CoHealth, one of the largest community health organisations in Australia.She completed the Williamson Community Leadership Program in 2017. Llewellyn lost most of her vision in 2014, through a hereditary eye condition. She's passionate about addressing inequity in our community, and ensuring diversity and inclusion in all aspects of life. Getting clear about intentions in joining a Board with Rachel Lowry - Episode 2
Rachel is the chief Conservation Officer at the World Wildlife Federation, WWF Australia and past president of the International Zoo Educators Association, and former chair of the Centre for Sustainability Leadership. She also currently sits on the Parks Victoria Advisory Committee and the Zoo Wise Advisory Committee.In our discussion, we talk about being an effective board member: what time commitment is required, what support you ned to have in place, what's the balance between governance and operational, what skills you need to have on your board, and also how incredibly rewarding it can be to be a board member.One of the other things that stands out in this discussion is Rachel’s views about engaging with members and networks. She talks about:her first board role, which she gained through reaching out to Larissa Brown, the then CEO of the Centre for Sustainability Leadership.her time as President of the Zoo Educators Association where she surveyed members so that board could determine their strategic direction.
