This session is for attendees that are fairly new to the EA community. Catherine will give a quick overview of Effective Altruism, what the EA community does, and the ways our community is unique. EA conferences are unlike any other conferences! So Catherine will also share some tips on how you can make the most of your weekend, and give you a chance to meet other newcomers.

The EA movement prioritizes cause areas based on scale, neglectedness, and tractability, and seeks effective interventions within each area. However, certain interventions can address multiple cause areas simultaneously. This talk explores the concept of intercausal impacts and analyses food system change as a prime example, given that our current food system not only causes vast amounts of animal suffering but also is a key driver in many other of the world’s most pressing problems. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyHqkIIlUEQ

GiveDirectly grew 6x during COVID-19, in part because the realities of the pandemic made cash transfers exciting to many more people than before. Two years later, a senior leader from their growth team shares lessons learned about to build and adapt an effective-intervention brand to multiple audiences and retain mass-appeal.
