Course teaser: Back to Hermes with Andrew Sweeny
This new course from PARALLAX ACADEMY’s “Rebuilding Spirituality” curriculum - starting March 5th 2023, aims to explore comparative symbolism and examine the differences between eastern and western arcane symbol systems. We will ask ourselves: what is true in magic and mysticism, and what is new-age bullshit? How can we practice symbolic contemplation without self—delusion and fantasy, or falling into various states of 'egregore possession' or ego inflation? What exactly is gnosis, magic, and mysticism and how to distinguish between them? What are the practical uses of symbolic contemplation and work with archetypes? How do we become symbolically literate?
We will begin by exploring the so-called 22 "arcanum" of the Tarot card deck from diverse perspectives, such as Valentine Tomberg's Christian Hermeticism, Alister Crowley's Magick, and Alejandro Jodorowsky's psycho-magic. We will then explore what Dion Fortune called the 'yoga of the west' or the Tree of life or Sefirot. We survey some of David Chaim Smith's ideas in his book "The Kabbalistic mirror of Genesis" and his non-dual and "non-emanationist" view of symbolism. Finally, we will look at symbolism from the point of view of Buddhist tantra, my own tradition of practice.
There will be lectures and dialogue, readings and meditation. For those who subscribe to the complete package, I will offer one-to-one 'meaning coaching' sessions, which include symbolic exploration, dialogues, and self-inquiry—and even Tarot readings! Please join us for some illuminating and radical fun!

Parallax/Intellectual Deep Web Extravaganza #3
w. Alexander Bard - Alex Ebert -Thomas Hamelryck - O.G. Rose - Dimitri Crooijmans - Andrew Sweeny - Daniel Fraga - Owen Cox - Raven A third conversation with the mysterious figures of a legendary online philosophical forum called The Intellectual Deep Web. Attendees include Alexander Bard, OG Rose, Alex Ebert, Thomas Hamelryck, Daniel Fraga, and Raven Connolly.

Layman Pascal has described it thus: The Intellectual Deep Web (a name that parodies and transcends the notorious ""intellectual dark web"") is a contingent of high-powered neo-philosophers lurking at the edges of the so-called Emerge field. They are voracious, combative, obscenely well-read, performative, enticing, offputting, fast & deeply attuned to the leading edges of technosocial, occult, spiritual, psychoanalytic and cultural unfoldment. Their vision of upgrade in a time between worlds is a Dark Renaissance. This concept takes archaic futurism, technophilia, phallic vigor, immanent transcendence, interactivity, emergent informational worldviews, artistry, metalocalism and emergent religion and combines all that with an intoxicating affirmation of negation, dissonance, abysses and exclusionary boundaries. Oh, and don't forget their deep skepticism about the unprocessed sexual and aggressive tendencies that might be locking the rest of us into a toothless and doomed utopianism. https://www.whatisemerging.com/profiles/what-the-hell-is-a-dark-renaissance

Parallax Sangha #9: Thomas Hamelryck - The return of prohibition and ritual
With the guiding star of Rene Girard, Tomas Hamelryck makes an analysis of the present culture and the need to distinguish between ritual time and times of prohibition. Without the release valve of ritual carnival transgression, the murderous scapegoat mechanism and mob will capture the culture; whereas with too much prohibition, the culture becomes rigid and tyrannical. In the present culture, we have ‘unsatisfying ritual time’ in the form of banal entertainment; our prohibitions are unclear and tend to devolve into scapegoating. This is why we need to understand the tension between sutric law (prohibition) and tantric transgression (ritual) and bring back intelligent religious prohibition and satisfying art and collective ritual.
Thomas Hamelryck is a Girardian scholar and professor of machine learning. His research focuses on rethinking the foundations of religion from the perspective of mimetic desire, scapegoating and ritual, synthesising Girard, Nietzsche, and eastern tantric religion.

Parallax Sangha #8: O.G. Rose - Literature, Philosophy, and Tragedy
Owen Cox and Andrew Sweeny talk to OG Rose ( pen name of Daniel and Michelle Garner) about the creative dance between literature and philosophy. They discuss how literature makes philosophy real by putting ideas into the conflict between different human subjects, requiring the reader to evaluate and undergo their process of self-discovery and self-becoming in reading. They discuss the pitfalls of rationality and intellect divorced from the body and how art helps keep the two together. They think about tragedy and trauma in literature and critique notions of "post-tragedy". And they think about the state of modern literature and culture in general, where it goes wrong, and what it needs.
O.G. Rose is the penname of Daniel and Michelle Garner, consisting of Michelle’s maiden, middle, and their shared last name. While at the University of Virginia, O.G. Rose spent several years working collaboratively with other artists at Eunoia, a creative community Rose helped develop. Rose now lives on a farm, manages a wedding venue named Mead Lake Lodge, operates Frozen Glory Photography, and teaches piano using visuals from the DLG Pattern Method.
A finalist for the 2020 UNO Press Lab Prize and 46th Pushcart Nominee, Rose’s creative works appear at The Write Launch, Allegory Ridge, Streetlight Magazine, Ponder Review, Iowa Review online, The William and Mary Review, Assure Press, Toho Journal online, West Trade Review, ellipsis, Poydras Review, O:JA&L, Burningword, and Broken Pencil.

Parallax Sangha #7: Raven Connolly - Gender Envy
In this conversation Owen and Raven begin by discussing autoeroticism and autogynephelia, a theory for understanding transgenderism different from the usual gender theories. They continue to think about sexual subculture and the broader 20th and 21st century context, then open up a group discussion which begins to explore the idea of ritual time vs ordinary time and how we suffer when the distinctions break down.
Raven Connolly has been described as a “digital socialite” and a “philosopher queen”. She is currently travelling Europe and America, exploring and networking with the various underground subcultures of the avant-garde, hippy and tech scenes. She has been a host on Peter Limberg’s Stoa, a facilitator with the Nordic Women’s Gathering, and was a student of Bret Weinstein (of IDW fame). What is Parallax Sangha?
