Jo Dunkley: This Is Our Universe (#168)
Jo Dunkley is a Professor of Physics and Astrophysical Sciences at Princeton University. Her research is in cosmology, studying the origins and evolution of the Universe. Her major projects are the Atacama Cosmology Telescope and the Simons Observatory. She's also a member of the Rubin Observatory's Dark Energy Science Collaboration.Professor Dunkley has been awarded the Maxwell Medal, the Rosalind Franklin award, and the New Horizons prize for her work on the Cosmic Microwave Background, and she shared the Gruber Prize and the Breakthrough Prize with the WMAP team.In her thrilling new guide to our Universe and how it works OUR UNIVERSE, Professor Dunkley reveals how it only becomes more beautiful and exciting the more we discover about it. With warmth and clarity, Dunkley takes us from the very basics - why the Earth orbits the Sun, and how our Moon works - right up to massive, strange phenomena like superclusters, quasars, and the geometry of spacetime. As she does so, Dunkley unfurls the history of humankind's heroic journey to understand the history and structure of the cosmos, revealing the extraordinary, little-known stories of astronomy pioneers including Williamina Fleming, Vera Rubin and Jocelyn Bell Burnell.Support our SponsorsLinkedIn Jobs! Alan Lightman: Astronomy's Tolstoy -- Improbable Possibilities, Einstein's Dream, & More (#164)
Einstein's Dreams is a fictional collage of stories dreamed by Albert Einstein in 1905, when he worked in a patent office in Switzerland. As the defiant but sensitive young genius is creating his theory of relativity, a new conception of time, he imagines many possible worlds. In one, time is circular, and people are fated to repeat their triumphs and failures over and over. In another, there is a place where time stands still, visited by lovers and parents clinging to their children. In another, time is a nightingale, sometimes trapped by a bell jar.Support our SponsorsLinkedIn Jobs! Use this link to post your first job ad for FREE LinkedIn.com/impossiblehttps://magbreakthrough.com/impossibleProbable Impossibilities is a brilliant collection of meditative essays on the possibilities - and impossibilities - of nothingness and infinity, and how our place in the cosmos falls somewhere in between. Can space be divided into smaller and smaller units, ad infinitum? Does space extend to larger and larger regions, on and on to infinity? Is consciousness reducible to the material brain and its neurons? What was the origin of life, and can biologists create life from scratch in the lab?Probable Impossibilities is a deeply engaged consideration of what we know of the universe, of life and the mind, and of things vastly larger and smaller than ourselves.

Caleb Scharf: The Ascent of Information (#163)
Caleb Scharf was born and educated in England. He received his B.Sc. in physics from Durham University, and his Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Cambridge. Following postdoctoral work in X-ray astronomy and observational cosmology at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and the Space Telescope Science Institute in Maryland, he has been a research scientist at Columbia University in New York. He is currently the director of the multidisciplinary Columbia Astrobiology Center. His research interests include the study of exoplanets, exomoons, and the nature of environments suitable for life. Thanks to our sponsors!

About Caleb's new book, THE ASCENT OF INFORMATIONYour information has a life of its own, and it’s using you to get what it wants. One of the most peculiar and possibly unique features of humans is the vast amount of information we carry outside our biological selves. But in our rush to build the infrastructure for the 20 quintillion bits we create every day, we’ve failed to ask exactly why we’re expending ever-increasing amounts of energy, resources, and human effort to maintain all this data.Drawing on deep ideas and frontier thinking in evolutionary biology, computer science, information theory, and astrobiology, Caleb Scharf argues that information is, in a very real sense, alive. All the data we create—all of our emails, tweets, selfies, A.I.-generated text and funny cat videos—amounts to an aggregate lifeform. It has goals and needs. It’s an organism that has evolved right alongside us.This symbiotic relationship with information offers a startling new lens for looking at the world. Data isn’t just something we produce; it’s the reason we exist. This powerful idea has the potential to upend the way we think about our technology, our role as humans, and the fundamental nature of life.

Top Alien Hunter: “No, aliens aren’t here!” (#162)
Seth Shostak directs the search for extraterrestrials at the SETI Institute in California—trying to find evidence of intelligent life in space. He is also committed to getting the public, especially young people, excited about astrobiology and science in general.Seth is the host of “Big Picture Science,” the SETI Institute’s weekly radio show. The one-hour program uses interviews with leading researchers and lively and intelligent storytelling to tackle such big questions as: What came before the big bang? How does memory work? Will our descendants be human or machine? What’s the origin of humor? Big Picture Science can be found in iTunes and other podcast sites.http://sethshostak.com/Thanks to our sponsors!

The SETI Institute was incorporated as a 501(c)3 California Non-Profit Corporation on November 20, 1984. The inaugural officers of the Institute were CEO Thomas Pierson and SETI scientist Jill Tarter. The Institute began operations on February 1, 1985.Prior to the inception of the SETI Institute, NASA was funding a small project in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. John Billingham, Chief of Life Sciences at NASA Ames Research Center and Bernard (Barney) Oliver, formerly of Hewlett-Packard invited Tom Pierson and others into discussions about maximizing the effectiveness of the funds, and ways of putting more money into the research and less into institutional overhead. These discussions led to the concept of a dedicated non-profit research organization focused on research and education around the factors of the Drake Equation. This vision was realized in the 1984 incorporation of the SETI Institute.https://www.seti.org/Join this channel to get access to perks:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmXH_moPhfkqCk6S3b9RWuw/joinSupport the podcast: https://www.patreon.com/drbriankeatingAnd please join my mailing list to get resources and enter giveaways to win a FREE copy of my book (and more) http://briankeating.com/mailing_list.php 📝🎥 🎥 Watch my most popular videos🎥 🎥Frank Wilczek https://youtu.be/3z8RqKMQHe0?sub_confirmation=1Weinstein and Wolfram https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OI0AZ4Y4Ip4?sub_confirmation=1Sheldon Glashow: https://youtu.be/a0_iaWgxQtA?sub_confirmation=1Michael Saylor The Physics of Bitcoin https://youtu.be/CaN_CDKqXOg?sub_confirmation=1Sir Roger Penrose, Nobel Prize winner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMuqyAvX7Wo?sub_confirmation=1Jill Tarter https://youtu.be/O9K9OBd3vHk?sub_confirmation=1Sara Seager Venus LIfe: https://youtu.be/QPsEDoOTU6k?sub_confirmation=1Noam Chomsky: https://youtu.be/Iaz6JIxDh6Y?sub_confirmation=1Sabine Hossenfelder: https://youtu.be/V6dMM2-X6nk?sub_confirmation=1Sarah Scoles: https://youtu.be/apVKobWigMwStephen Wolfram: https://youtu.be/nSAemRxzmXM🏄♂️ Find me on Twitter at https://twitter.com/DrBrianKeating🔥 Find me on Instagram at https://instagram.com/DrBrianKeating📖 Buy my book LOSING THE NOBEL PRIZE: http://amzn.to/2sa5UpA🔔 Subscribe for more great content https://www.youtube.com/DrBrianKeating?sub_confirmation=1✍️Detailed Blog posts here: https://briankeating.com/blog.php📧Join my mailing list: http://briankeating.com/mailing_list.php👪Join my Facebook Group: https://facebook.com/losingthenobelprize🎙️Please subscribe, rate, and review the INTO THE IMPOSSIBLE Podcast on iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/into-the-impossible/id1169885840?mt=2🎙️Listen on all other platforms: https://wavve.link/intoA production of http://imagination.ucsd.edu/Support the podcast: https://www.patreon.com/drbriankeating Learn more about your ad choices.
