089 Bridgette Mayer: Rising Above Your Circumstances

"Faith is like a muscle. It's similar to going out for a run- if you don't do it normally run, you're going to sweat and it's not going to be comfortable. If you step into having faith when you don't know what the end is going to be, then that's something you can build every single day and you can rely on it." - Bridgette Mayer   This show is for everyone who believes that their past determines their future. How did a young girl who came through the Division of Child Protection and Permanency (DYFS) system and foster care end up in the art world with a multi-million dollar gallery and consulting business? Through the kindness of strangers, fierce determination, and a survivor’s sheer will, Bridgette Mayer’s is a success story for the ages. In her inspirational memoir of gross neglect, violent abuse, and ultimately redemption, she shares her journey from the projects of Jersey City to eventually becoming one of Philadelphia’s most celebrated gallery owners. By following her heart and passion for art, Mayer’s interests evolved from a means of escape into her salvation and her security. She used her inherent self-assurance, natural curiosity, and scrapper work ethic to overcome the damage inflicted on her as a child and create a harmonious, rewarding, and charitable life — for herself and the artists she represents.   Rising Above Your Circumstances   "Anger is a much more proactive emotion than despair. I've used anger and fear to propel me forward. I've learned how to use both pretty well at this point. I've used such experiences to make me a better." - Bridgette Mayer   Bridgette's memoir, The Art Cure : A Memoir of Abuse & Fortune (published by Little Lion press in September 2016), is for anyone who aspires to a career in the arts and who has been told it’s too difficult or impractical to pursue. With bravery and tenacity, anyone can achieve the life of their dreams, no matter how out of reach it may seem. Mayer offers readers a bridge to color and a lifeline of hope for the future. After suffering an abusive childhood that landed her in foster care homes and on the streets, starving and beat up, Bridgette was adopted by a wonderful family at the age of nine and began her life transformation. Her early and challenging experiences gave her a tenacity of spirit, unbreakable creativity and a desire to make her mark in the art world. Now a successful art dealer, curator, art adviser, author and entrepreneur, Bridgette Mayer has spent decades cultivating her passion for art, artists, the clients she advises and finding her way to the top of the art world.   Creating The New Story   "I had a moment of frustration and I said to myself, 'The next 10 things that I'm asked to do, I'm just going to say 'yes' to them and figure it out.' The next day, I got a call from CNN to be on Anderson Cooper's show, 'On the Rise.' " - Bridgette Mayer   Bridgette's background of struggle and overcoming obstacles lead to her current success and spurred her to write, “The Art Cure: A Memoir of Abuse & Fortune.” Her passion for artists and managing them to the highest level as well as working with top collectors from around the world has guided her business the past seventeen years. Bridgette's expertise encompasses a whole approach to art collecting, creating authentic environments both public and private with art. Her mission is to continue to inspire those around her and especially artists, women and entrepreneurs to live the life they dream even in the face of insurmountable obstacles.   Bridgette Mayer Gallery   The Bridgette Mayer Gallery has been featured on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 as a small business “On The Rise” and was recognized as a recommended Philadelphia arts destination in The New York Times Magazine. In 2013, Mayer was named one of the top 500 Galleries in the world by Boulin ArtInfo, and was also featured in the Tory Burch Foundation’s “Women To Watch” series. Mayer has been a featured speaker on many panels in the Philadelphia area and has guest lectured at a number of Universities, where her talks focus on how emerging artists can promote their work and sustain a career in the arts.  A graduate of Bucknell University, Mayer was an active member of the University’s Arts Board for several years.  She is currently a board member of the Arts & Business Council, Philadelphia, PA & Vox Vopuli, Philadelphia, PA.   About Bridgette Mayer   For the past sixteen years Bridgette Mayer has been running a top contemporary art gallery in Philadelphia and helping her clients and the artists she serves improve the quality of their life through art. Growing up in an abusive home in the projects of Jersey City and filtered through the foster care system until she was nine years old, Bridgette was finally adopted by a wonderful family. If you had seen the conditions she grew up in, you would not even believe it that someone could come from there and get to where she is now. She had to learn how to read and get started living a life that was no longer centered around the drugs, alcohol and physical abuse. Over the years she has come through many challenges and worked for her dream of being a top arts professional in the gallery industry. For her entire life, Bridgette had big dreams, and has dreamed the dreams that others said would not be possible. Bridgette is living proof and this is not a Hollywood movie. She literally came from the other side of the tracks and built a life of abundance for herself. From Bridgette: "That is why I wanted to write a book to share my story with you. Part memoir and part how I got my start in the art world, this book is for anybody who might need inspiration or might want to know how somebody like myself who came from nothing, was able to build a multi-million dollar business in the art world. You see, It is possible. I hope you will share my journey and see what is possible for you!"   Resources Mentioned On the Show Bridgette's Book "The Art Cure" Bridgette's Website Bridgette's Art Gallery on Facebook Bridgette's Art Gallery on Twitter B Mayer Art Micheal Gerber's Books The Real-Life MBA by Jack and Suzy Welch Purple Cow by Seth Godin Check out the WF podcast episode with Jake Ducey Tony Robbins' Website   What You'll Hear On The Show 1:50  Josh discusses today's show topics 4:30  Josh introduces Bridgette 5:45  Bridgette shares her childhood history 7:00  What was your birth mom's struggle? 8:30  Bridgette's transitional experience into foster care 13:30  How Bridgette discovered her artistic gift 15:30  Bridgette talks about how her emotional wellness grew because of art 18:00  How did you decide to become a gallery owner? 25:15  What was your mindset like during this transition period? 27:00  What did you write to your mother in your 10 page letter to her? 33:00  What's your connection with your clients? 34:00 What do you do now to cultivate emotional wellness? 36:00  A lot of us deal with fear. 088 Dan Pardi: How To Find The Health You’re Looking For

"Knowing without doing is the same thing as not knowing. What matters is if the knowledge that you have will give you an effective health practice for the long term." - Dan Pardi    There is power in knowledge and with the right health and wellness information, we can make the right decisions in accordance with our own needs. This week, entrepreneur, researcher, and developer of Loop Model to Sustain Health Behaviors, Dan Pardi, explains Self Determination Theory and motivation, the human connection, and his latest project, humanOS to help us find the best health information.   Find The Health You're Looking For "You have more control over your health than anyone else." -  Dan Pardi   There are many sources out there that claim that they have the answer to all of your health problems, but they truly don't. These novelty, quick fix methods, products, and services may look appealing, but they aren't sustainable for long-term health results. To find the best help for your health needs, you first have to clarify your own health problems. Rather than trend hopping by focusing on what you just read in the latest health magazine about a new diet, research and find out for yourself what your body needs.  It can be so confusing with so much information out there in books, magazines, and the internet. However, sources like humansOS, that Dan and his team are putting together, help us find the best, most credible sources of information.    Truth vs. Fiction For Health Research   In a recent interview on humanOS radio with Dr. David Katz of Yale, Dan mentioned:   “As well-intentioned as someone might be, I frequently find myself getting  frustrated, not when somebody’s passionate and wrong about an issue,  but when people can be overly confident and dismissive of  mainstream medicine’s consensus in favor of their own opinion which can often associate with their own financial reward.”   Once you have a proper perspective and mindset, you make good decisions for yourself. It's better late than never to embrace your responsibility to find the best method and motivation for you stay true to yourself and progress your health journey.  One challenge we all face today is the fight against the modern lifestyle. We used to be hunters and gathers, but today we're consuming high processed foods and sitting around too much at home. An unhealthy lifestyle doesn't only lead to chronic disease, but can impair our daily performance and relationships as well. All the technology in the world won't help you, but you can use the power of technology to fight back against misinformed studies to do your own research.    Begin Your Own Research   To ensure that you are finding the best information out there, look closely at who this researcher is and what their study is all about.  Who are they associated with? Do they declare their method? Do they offer a too good to be true solution? If this source appears to provide a quick fix, be careful.  OR Do they have a realistic perspective? Does their method clearly explain how it will help? Is their research comprehensive? Does their campaign have an overall, large framework.  Once you've found a legitimate piece of information on health, how can you incorporate it into your daily life? Try to clarify the problem that you're trying to solve. Find the right ideas that can help you.  Understand those ideas deeply. Turn those into health and wellness skills. Maintain those health skills for life with good information.  Human Motivation   "Our job isn’t to motivate other people, it’s about creating the condition in which people can motivate themselves.” - Dan Pardi   Self Determination Theory - (SDT) is a theory of motivation. It is concerned with supporting our natural or intrinsic tendencies to behave in effective and healthy ways. SDT has been researched and practiced by a network of researchers around the world. The theory aims to understand motivation by looking at the core categories of human needs: Physical, which is things like thirst, and hunger, and sex. Psychological, which is the desire to be competent in anything but particularly things that are important. Autonomy, which speaks to the notion that we like to have freedom to determine our own path. Social needs, which is the sense of belonging to a group, recognition from others, and even the sense of power in your own life.     Controlled vs Autonomous Motivation SDT is a behavior model that tries to understand what human motivation is. Motivation has many different categories that can be placed into two different groups: Controlled Motivation and Autonomous Motivation. Controlled Motivation Controlled motivation is caused by external rewards such as a prize for accomplishing a goal. But you can also be punished by having something taken away from you if you don't complete the goal or feel guilty for not accomplishing it. Autonomous Motivation Autonomous motivation is when a person is compelled to do something because the activity takes on some personal importance or it becomes a part of the person's belief system and it even becomes part of the person's identity. Your not motivated by external rewards, but you do something because it's a part of your identity and who you are as a person. Dan gave a great example that someone who has controlled motivation runs for the physical reward. However, a person who has autonomous motivation will run in the rain despite all rational thinking because exercise no matter what is part of who they are.   Using humanOS to Your Advantage   As a mission, humanOS helps people master their health.  Understanding that this is necessary is actually critical to one's success of long-term help.   Why?   Because all the technology in the world won't be healthy for you. The technology can't just be available, you have to pick it up and use it and you have to use it the right way. HumanOS helps you benefit from the worlds best health technology and health information. How did you make humanOS so clear and easy to use? Explain why something is really worth your attention compared to something you shouldn't really pay attention to. Some untested therapies claim to have the ultimate answer for everything, but they're not validated. Having mindfulness or awareness about health can put you in a better position. If more people are aware of their own health and what works and what doesn't, we'll become a healthier community overall.   Listen As Dan Uncovers Why clarifying the exact health problem is missed by more than half of people seeking change Novelty seeking vs. taking a deeper dive into what you know to be helpful How do we get to the deeper understanding to creating skills for sustainable change How to not get lost in the research and data for your health Why Dan became frustrated by the ocean of misleading health information online and decided to do the academic work to create a trusted source based on science: humanOS. Understanding the human behavior model Why Dan was inspired from his father's early death from lifestyle Dan's Ancestral Health Symposium Talk Self Determination Theory Internal motivation, autonomy, vs. external motivation, reward, punishment, validation How to leverage different types of motivations for sustainable health change Learning for efficacy vs learning for recognition How does something go from interesting idea that you recognize to something that has a direct impact on your blood work?   About Dan Pardi Dan Pardi is an entrepreneur and researcher whose life’s work is centered on how to facilitate health behaviors in others. He is the developer of Loop Model to Sustain Health Behaviors to help people live a healthy lifestyle in a modern world. He does research with the Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Department at Stanford, and the Departments of Neurology and Endocrinology at Leiden University in the Netherlands. Dan specializes in building systems for health, behavior optimization and habit building, energy homeostasis, cognition, decision making, and physiology (sleep, exercise, and inactivity). Dan also works with Naval Special Warfare to help the most elite fighters in the world maintain vigilant performance in both combat and non-combat conditions. Formerly, Dan served as Board Chairman of the Investigator Initiated Sponsored Research Association, a global non-profit aimed to promote best practices in the arena of academic research grants.   Resources Mentioned On the Show The Most Advanced Understanding of How to Optimize Motivation: humanOS Radio Living a Healthy Lifestyle in a Modern World with Dan Pardi-EP 12 Dan’s Plan AHS 2014 Video  How Quantified Self Technologies Will Help Us Live More Like Our Ancestors  Stanford MedicineX Video  Loop Model BRETT HOEBEL: FINDING STRENGTH IN YOUR STRUGGLE-EP62 The Science of Mindfulness by Daniel Siegel   What You'll Hear On The Show 1:50  Josh discusses today's show topics 3:50  Introduction to Dan 4:45  Clarifying the health problem first 8:00  How can we transition from novelty information to applying what's best for us? 13:40  How can technology and resources like humanOS build a bridge for a healthier lifestyle? 18:00 What is self determination theory? 087 Bonnie Kelly: Upgrading Your Subconscious Beliefs

"How you perceive, interrupt, and how you experience reality is unique to you like your thumb print. That neurologically you are an endangered species." - Bonnie Kelly   Today, certified life coach & personal development expert, Bonnie Kelly, tells her story have how she overcame an astonishing amount of hurt and betrayal to become the strong woman, coach, speaker, and author on a mission to help 100 million people end needless suffering.  In just one year, we've listened to so many incredible stories about how powerful the subconscious mind is, and today we have a powerful one that sits atop the collective. One way to Bonnie was able to let go of her past to move on with a new life was by reprogramming negative thoughts to create a new, truthful story and forgiving her past.   Our Subconscious Software   "Feelings are the guards that stand watch over the belief ensuring it will not escape. For many of us, childhood felt more like an episode of Survivor than Leave it to Beaver." - Bonnie Kelly   Our brain is similar to a computer. We have a monitor that connects to the tower to transmit all of the necessary information to function and learn. Inside the computer, we have software that stores and saves all of our memories in the history file. Our software is our subconscious mind which controls all of our thinking and can also create either positive, true thoughts or negative, false thoughts in our mind as far as: Who we think we are How we show up in the world How we fit in the world   Negative Core Beliefs   Throughout life, we collect negative experiences and traumas. Even as children, any unintentional hardship that we experience becomes  part of our negative core beliefs. These experiences are like viruses being installed in our brains. We end up accepting harmful events and remember them in our subconscious. Once these negative thoughts become part of our every day thinking, it's hard to change them. If we don't challenge our negative core beliefs, they become part of who we are and we tell ourselves false ideas such as: We're not lovable. We don't matter. We're not good enough.   Stop The Cycle of Negative Thinking We attract ourselves to feelings or environments that are familiar to us. Because of this, we always we end up in experiences at re-validate any negative thoughts that we have about ourselves. Bonnie experienced a constant cycle of  bad relationships because that was what she was drawn to. Her negative core belief that she is not lovable attracted her to people and situations and confirmed that thought. She's realized that if we don't recognize the continuous cycle of negative thinking, we will continue to believe that our NCB's are true. We have to realize that this is how the brain is working against us.  If we disconnect ourselves from the negative thinking and stop reinforcing a new habit from a previous negative thought for 3 days, we can change ourselves emotionally. New, positive connections can reshape you into a new form of being. Put into daily practice, this can help us get out of long-term depression. However, if we reinforce the negative thoughts again, then we go back to our old way of thinking.   Learning to Forgive and Let Go   "Forgiveness isn't about the other person. It's about us. It's about letting go of the things that have happened because forgiveness is a gift you give to yourself."-Tony Robbins   It takes a tremendous effort to discover the root cause of our subconscious. Once we've discovered it, we need to focus on changing it through techniques on a regular basis. One method that Bonnie suggests is to practice forgiveness and retell your true story.   Not Your Fault, But Your Responsibility  The first stop on the process of healing the negative subconscious mind is to realize that things that have happened to you were not your fault and you were the victim. The words that people have said to you or the actions they have done were not your fault. Therefore these experiences that have created NCB in your mind don't actually have any true meaning that validates the person that you are. The things that have happened to you are not your fault and you became the victim. By giving that story power, your giving away your freedom. Forgiveness takes time and strength, but it will be your gateway of letting go of any wrongdoing that has been done to you. Forgiving others will help you transform you story and rewrite it so that you feel empowered once again and find your true core. Forgiveness is a practice and a choice that you have to do over and over to heal. Unwilling to forgive will consume you and keep you stuck with all of your feelings of anger and resentment towards others and what has happened to you. No one is gong to save you and you have to become your own hero.    About Bonnie Kelly Bonnie Kelly is a certified life coach & personal development expert, located in the Sacramento & Placer county area. 085 Lisa Perkins: You Are Not One Size Fits All

When it comes to personal health, one size does NOT fit all. We are all unique in terms of our preferences, genetics, life experiences. Therefore, what works for one person may not work for us. The same can be said about a relationship between a personal coach and a client. Just because one approach worked with one client doesn't mean that it will work with another client. What does it take to a create a positive relationship between a personal coach and client? How can a personal coach connect with a client in such a way that it will change their life forever? ACSM Certified Personal Trainer and Precision Nutrition Coach, Lisa Perkins, of Primal Transformations shares her 5 tips for changing your life around and discovering the perfect health plan for you.   The Power of Connection in The Coaching Relationship   "We can't look at quantitative biomarker data without looking at the emotional components."-Lisa Perkins   During her journey to become a personal coach, Lisa discovered the power of emotional intelligence and connection with other people. She realized that there is so much more to health than food or exercise. A good coach looks at the whole person.  Nutrition, exercise, and sleep all matter but they are just part of the story. One-size-fits-all plans don’t allow wiggle room for things like work deadlines, the stress of caring for family members, or internal struggles with self-esteem.  They also don’t provide support to help clients consistently implement their plan. Lack of customization and lack of support often prevent people from being successful.  Good coaches know this.  They work with clients to develop an enjoyable process that leads to long-term, sustainable results. A person needs to set a health goal that connects their deepest values. Lisa has witnessed the struggle of many clients dealing with a story of yo-yo dieting, restrictive eating, and plan hopping. They weren't told how important it is to lock in your "big why." According to Lisa, you have to determine how you want to FEEL when you achieve your goal.  If you’re trying to conform to how you think society wants you to look, that’s not a positive motivator. Instead, ask yourself, ‘How do I want to show up in the world?’ Strong? Radiantly healthy?  Energetic?  Capable of doing whatever I want to do? These are the powerful emotions that will help us keep our eyes focused on our unique goal.    Finding the Perfect Coach for You Find a coach who you can connect with and is willing to collaborate on a customized plan. Take the time to interview several coaches.  This is a personal relationship and it’s vital that you feel comfortable opening up with them. Don’t settle for the first coach you talk to or the least expensive coach. Remember:  You are worth the journey to reclaim your health and mojo.  Take the time to find a good coach and see for yourself how big an impact this has on your health, fitness, and life.   Your Approach Predicts Your Progress   "When we're constantly judging ourselves, nothing will happen. When we talk with other people that we trust, we can see things in a new light. We're all struggling with the same things, but we're not talking about them." - Lisa Perkins   The diet industry only focuses on short term result plans, but these often end in us reverting back to old habits. If we're going to do the work, we want the results that we get to keep! This requires us to slow down a bit, figure out our key roadblocks, and do the work to get out of our own way. This doesn't seem very sexy until you discover how amazing life can be without the diet/shame roller coaster. Just like Goldilocks, you need a plan that is 'just right' for you.  If what you're currently doing isn't working for you, it's not a moral failure. It simply isn't the approach that works for you! This doesn't mean you start judging yourself. Instead, you need to get curious! For example: You're hungry at 10AM. Ask, 'Did I get enough of the right food for breakfast? What could I change tomorrow?'. You like to graze in the evening.  Ask:  ‘Did I eat enough protein, carbs, fiber, and healthy fat at dinner?’  OR ‘Am I craving snacks out of habit/feel disconnected from others/feel bitter about going to a job I detest tomorrow?’ You simply can’t make yourself go to the gym.  Ask:  ‘Where can I find a bodyweight exercise routine that I can do at home that makes me feel good and doesn’t make me feel punished?’.  (Hint:  YouTube is full of them!) These are examples of how getting curious, as opposed to judging yourself for ‘failing’ on someone else’s plan, allows you to customize a nutrition and fitness plan fits your preferences, goals, and lifestyle.   Become the Expert on You vs Following Gurus   We have the power to take our health into our own hands but, sadly, we often forget this. Lisa often reminds her clients that they were in the driver’s seat of their own life the entire time, they were simply napping at the wheel! Life is short.  We mustn’t settle.  If your ‘normal’ is tired, unexcited, and feeling frumpy, it’s time to wake up.  We all deserve better than this. The great news?  It’s not that hard to get it! We tend to over-complicate this ‘getting healthy’ business.  It’s pretty simple:  What could you do in the next hour that would make you feel more vibrant? Could you go for a walk instead of eating that free (not!) break room doughnut?  Could you call a friend instead of going on social media? These small actions don’t seem like much but when you put them together, you’ve got a beautiful thing called momentum.   Lisa recommends 3 steps to begin your own health journey: 1) Eat real food most of the time Paleo is a simple approach and a good baseline to just start eating simple, nutrient dense food. 2)Become aware of your body's signals Ask yourself, "Am I physically hungry?" When you're aware of your body's signals, you develop self awareness. 3) Prepared with healthy food Taking the time to have healthy food prepared and ready to go is key. We want to make the healthiest option the most convenient option. High quality protein (organic, pastured, grass fed, wild caught), a wide variety  of organic veggies, and a moderate amount of healthy fat (olive oil, coconut oil, grass fed butter, avocado) is key to good energy, feeling satisfied, and developing a fit physique.   There IS NO wagon According to Lisa, the wagon mentality was invented by the diet industry to make us feel like we can't figure things out for ourselves. Unfortunately, this approach is toxic for our self-esteem. It prevents us from building trust with our own hunger/fullness signales and it makes us feel out of control. A better approach is to determine what represents an improvement for you at each meal.  Start there.  Learn to get on the same team with your body.  You wouldn’t feed your kids a sleeve of cookies for dinner because that wouldn’t be taking good care of them.  Give yourself the same grace. You deserve to take impeccable care of yourself. Ditch the wagon and adopt the ‘I take impeccable care of myself’ approach.  Not only is this more enjoyable, the result is a body and life you love.     Secret Sauce...Start Living Now! How do you think your life will be different when you’ve lost weight or improved your health?  What activities, career moves, or social engagements are you putting off? Start doing these things now. Why? Lisa gives two reasons: 1) You are more than worthy right now to show up, say yes to friends, take the trip, wear the bikini, go for the promotion, or whatever else you’re putting off until you’ve lost (insert number) pounds. Does anyone care what J.K. Rowling or Angela Merkel weighs? It’s ridiculous when you stop and think about it.   Start living now. 2) You’re much more likely to achieve your health and fitness goals if you’re excited about something else in your life.  Too often, we use food as entertainment or as a way to fill the void. Let’s fill the void with what we’re actually craving which is very often a sense of purpose, joy, and meaningful social connection.   About Lisa Perkins Lisa Perkins is a former librarian from Alaska turned ACSM Certified Personal Trainer and Precision Nutrition Coach. After years of living with chronic illness, she figured out the secret sauce for living a fit, vibrant life. 084 Dr. David Perlmutter: The Grain Brain Whole Life Plan

"Our dietary choices play a major role in determining whether we are going to live into our 80s and 90s and even beyond with a good, functioning brain, or like 50% of people who live to be age 85, we will experience brain decline in the form of Alzheimer's which is a preventable disease."- Dr. David Perlmutter  When we think about brain health, we don't think that our gut has anything to do with it. However, the fact is that the gut has everything to do with how our brains function as we grow older. Neurologist and New York Times Best Selling Author, Dr. David Perlmutter has witnessed the damaging effects that a poor diet can have on our brains. Today is perfect timing with the launch of his new book, The Grain Brain Whole Life Plan, as he shares why we are vulnerable to develop brain degenerative disease and how we can take matters into our own hands in order to live long, healthy lives with a bright mind that is free of illness.   Make the Choice to Have a Healthy Brain Even if a relative of yours was diagnosed with a brain degenerative disease such as Alzheimer's, you have the amazing opportunity to make lifestyle choices to ensure your brain's health. Factors such as sleep, nutrition, stress levels, and exercise can impact your health, but you can also take advantage of them to improve your wellness and lower the chances of brain decline.   Connecting Wellness And Gut Health   "It's a bit humbling to recognize that mood is regulated by our gut. Not only through the process of controlling inflammation, which is a cornerstone player in depression, but that around 90% of our levels of dopamine and serotonin are not manufactured in the brain. They're mostly manufactured in the gut." - Dr. David Perlmutter     If the gut is leaky and we lack serotonin, it can be linked to feelings of depression. In a study with probiotic yogurt, researchers found a dramatic change in brain function and mood in the test subjects that ate the yogurt compared to those who did not.   Build a Healthy Gut At this moment, there is a diverse community of healthy, gut bacteria living inside of us. If any harm comes our gut's way, it can increase the chances of having a leaky gut. This leaky gut can lead to inflammation and degenerative diseases including: Alzheimer's Parkinson's Diabetes Multiple Sclerosis Cancer The right way to eat food, is to focus on following a diet that helps reduce the chance of a leaky gut and inflammation from happening inside the body.   Do You Have a Leaky Gut? In today's world, we should assume that it is likely that we all have somewhat of a leaky gut. We would have to take a test or participate in a study to know for sure by having an LPS level done in a lab. There's a higher chance that you have a leaky gut if you have an inflammatory condition such as: Depression Early onset Parkinson's Alzheimer's Joint issues Skin inflammation Autism What can you do to heal your leaky gut? To help heal your gut, remove any offensive agents that may be harming it such as any overuse of: Antibiotics GMOs Drinking chlorinated water Artificial sugars and sweeteners Acid blocking drugs Proton pump inhibitors Non-steroid and anti-inflammatory drugs Stress To heal our gut, we need to stimulate and increase the diversity of the organisms that live inside of the gut by exercising and eating foods that are rich in pre-biotic fiber that helps nurture our gut bacteria: Mexican yam/ jicamo Onion Garlic Leek Dandelion greens Kimchi Kobucha Yogurt Fermented vegetables   The Truth About Sugar and Gluten   "Inflammation caused by sugar consumption can lead to diabetes and quadruples your chances for Alzheimer's Disease." - Dr. David Perlmutter   For decades, we've been told that gluten and sugar is good for our health and that fat is bad. However, recent research has shown that this is the exact opposite. Healthy fat is good for both the body and brain function, but gluten and sugar (including artificial sugar and sweeteners) can cause our insulin levels to spike which leads to inflammation in the body. In fact, according to Dr. Perlmutter, artificial sweeteners were created to help people control the amount of sugars in their diet, but still be able to taste something sweet. Unfortunately, artificial sugars and sweeteners can dramatically increase a person's risk for obesity and diabetes. Take your health into your own hands by making good choices. Eat healthy and avoid any sugary drinks, high gluten foods, and anything labeled "sugar free" or "contains artificial sugars."   The Best Sources of Healthy Fat There's a lot of taboo hanging around the words, "fat" and "fatty food." However, healthy sources of fat are great for our bodies and important for our brain's health. According to Dr. Perlmutter, the brain is already made up of a lot of saturated fat and even human breast milk is 50% saturated fat. If you want to ensure that you follow a healthy diet, use the Ketogenic and Mediterranean diets as a good model to follow. The best sources of healthy fats include: Extra virgin olive oil (organic) Fatty fish with DHA Nuts Seeds Avocado Grass-fed and free-range meat Olive oil particularly is good source of polyphenols that act as antioxidants and nurture the gut bacteria. This source of healthy fat provides both mono and unsaturated fats for our brain cell building blacks. When you follow a Ketogenic or Mediterranean based diet, but add extra amounts of olive or cocnut oil, your cognitive function can improve dramatically.   A Diet to Help Prevent Alzheimer's Disease To better understand your body and gene makeup, there are numerous services available from companies that offer biometrics tests including: Wellness FX 23andMe Promethease The sooner you better understand your genes and if there is a chance for you to have an inflammatory disease, the sooner you can take action to fight against it. Depending on our dietary fat composition, there is a risk of dementia or Alzheimer's Disease, but it can be handled by following a diet that includes food that is high in healthy fats. As mentioned before, we should be eating more nuts, seeds, olive oil, and avocado. Monosaturated fats such as almond oil, almond butter/nut butter, an oleic acid in sunflower oil can help prevent degenerative brain disease. However, we should avoid canola oil, vegetable oil, corn oil and other modified oils in our diets. These are the unhealthy oils that can harm our body and brain function.   Build a Healthy Brain with Aerobics If you want to build a healthy brain, change your diet, but also increase the amount of aerobic exercise. Working out helps to turn on BDNF (Brain-derived neurotrophic factor) which serves as a growth hormone for the brain and helps increase the number of memory cells throughout our lifetime. People who exercise regularly can reduce their chances for Alzheimer's Disease by 50%! One of the best things you can do to help your brain stay healthy is to include aerobic exercise for 20 minutes every day.   6 Key Factors For a Whole Life Plan According to Dr. Perlmutter, there are 6 key factors and goals that take place in creating a whole life plan for a healthy brain and gut: Reducing and controlling inflammation Turning the body into a fat burning machine Balancing levels of bacteria Balancing hormones and increasing leptin sensitivity Taking care of our genes Balancing our life   About Dr. David Perlmutter Dr. Perlmuter is a Neurologist and Fellow of the American College of Nutrition who received his M.D. degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine where he was awarded the Leonard G. Rowntree Research Award. He is the author of: The Better Brain Book and the #1 New York Times Bestseller, Grain Brain, and Brain Maker, also a New York Times best seller. He is recognized internationally as a leader in the field of nutritional influences in neurological disorders. Over the past 35 years, Dr. Perlmutter has been interviewed on many nationally syndicated radio and television programs including 20/20, Larry King Live, CNN, Fox News, Fox and Friends, The Today Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Like with Kelly and Michael, Montel Across America and The CBS Early Show. The cornerstone of Dr. Perlmutter’s unique approach to neurological disorders is founded in the principles of preventive medicine. He has brought to the public awareness a rich understanding that challenging brain problems including Alzheimer’s disease, other forms of dementia, depression, and ADHD may very well be prevented with lifestyle changes including a gluten free, low carbohydrate, higher fat diet coupled with aerobic exercise. 083 Dr. Trevor Cates: Heal Your Skin From Within

"We have two different options. One option is that we can suppress and cover up our skin's problems with creams, makeup, or topical steroids. However, this is not really addressing the root problem of what is going on with our body. The other option is to really look at what the body is trying to tell us. The body is so wise and it's so important to pay attention to the signals that our skin gives us instead of ignoring them." - Dr. Trevor Cates   The skin is an incredible organ that protects our underlying tissues, organs, and bones. Each day, it keeps us insulated, controls our body temperature, and helps us take in essential Vitamin D from the sun. The skin is also a key indicator that lets us know when our physical and emotional health is unbalanced. If our skin is dry, oil, itchy, or breaks out in acne, it's telling us that there is something else going on with our bodies that needs to be addressed. If our skin is so amazing, shouldn't we do more for it by eating the right foods and give it the care that it needs to stay strong and healthy? This week, licensed Naturopathic Physician, Dr. Trevor Cates aka The Spa Doctor shares her personal experience of dealing with skin problems and how we can heal our skin from within. You will learn how to use natural foods and real life methods so that you can have that healthy glowing skin no matter your age or race.   Discover The Root of Skin Problems   "We're all different because of our genes, but that doesn't mean that we're stuck with our genes. We can change our genetic expression based upon how we live. We can change the foods that we eat, the products that we use, or the toxins in our environment such as mold."   - Dr. Trevor Cates   We have the power to take control and improve our own health and wellness. At a young age, Dr. Trevor Cates suffered from allergies and infections that led to bumps and itchy hives on her skin. Once her parents got in touch with a holistic practitioner, she learned exactly what her skin and body needed to be healthy again.  Soon enough, her skin cleared up and her self-confidence at school blossomed. The root of Dr. Cates skin problems were not only because of her genetics, but also because of the organic milk that she was drinking and the toxic mold in her home. Our skin acts as a magic mirror and can give us so many clues about our health. Take a moment a think to yourself, do you have the following indicators of poor skin health: Is you skin __________? Dry Oily Dull Do you have__________? Acne Eczema Hives Psoriasis Rosacea Whether we're experiencing mild or extreme cases, if these skin problems show up, it's a good indicator that something is out of balance in our bodies.   The Best and Worst Foods for Our Skin There are many foods that can help improve the health of our skin, but there are also many trigger foods that can worsen it. Here, Dr. Trevor Cates has put together a list of The 5 Best and Worst Foods for Skin Inflammation:  5 Best Foods for Skin Inflammation: Berries Sweet Potatoes Ginger Wild Alaskan Salmon Cruciferous Vegetables 5 Worst Foods for Skin Inflammation: Sugar Dairy Barbecued and overcooked meat Refined grains Trans fats and common cooking oils such as vegetable oil Dr. Cates also shared that corn, soy, and nightshade foods (i.e. potatoes, paprika, tomato, and eggplant) also have a negative affect on our bodies. In her upcoming book, Clean Skin From Within, she shares more information on what foods to eat and what to avoid. How do we know what foods are best for us? To learn about your own body and what foods are good for your skin and what will make you break out, Dr. Cates suggests doing a 2 week to 1 month challenge to discover what specific trigger foods affect your health. During the challenge, eliminate any of the top trigger/ worst foods for your skin from your diet. At the end of the challenge, slowly reintroduce each food once at a time and see if you react to the food in a negative manner. Dr. Cates also has a 21 Healthy Habits Challenge. Avoid Harmful Ingredients on Your Skin   "If you can't put it in your month, then you probably shouldn't put it on your skin."                    - Dr. Trevor Cates   On average, we use 9 personal care products each day such as: shampoo, fragrance, shaving cream, lotion, face wash, deodorant, hair gel, makeup etc. More often than not, these products contain ingredients that are harmful toxins or hormone disrupting chemicals. Dr. Trevor Cates shared several specific ingredients that we should stay away from. You may click here to read her entire blog post, Are Your Skincare Products Causing a Hormone Imbalance? Even if products claim to be "natural," it's just a word that is used to hide the fact that the ingredients include synthetic fragrance and other hormone disrupting chemicals such as diethyl phthalate and DMDM hydantoin aka formaldehyde releasers. Fragrance Diethyl phthalate is a plasticizing agent that is used to help hold the scent in fragrance. Even though we all want to smell good, a long-lasting scent is connected to headaches, dizziness, asthma, and allergies. A better alternative is to use essential oils if you want to smell good all day. Do your research and find a company that you know you can trust and one that uses clean extraction processes for their essential oil products. Beauty Products Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and irritant found in nail products, hair dye, fake eyelash adhesives, and some shampoos. It is banned in the European Union, but unfortunately the FDA still allows it to be used as an ingredient in our products. Sunscreen One common ingredient that also disrupts our hormones is oxybenzone. Stay away from products with this ingredient and replace it with something that includes minerals such as zinc oxide and anti-titanium dioxide. One of Dr. Cates' favorite sunscreens is from DeVita.    The Impact of Our Emotions on Our Skin Genetics, food, and environmental toxins are not the only factors that affect our skin's health. Our emotional wellness plays a big part as well. If we're emotionally unbalanced because of stress and other factors, this can affect our thyroid health and cortisol levels. Excess cortisol levels can help trigger skin inflammation which can create or worsen skin conditions. To learn about your skin's health, Dr. Trevor Cates has a Skin Quiz that you can take. Here are Josh's results: Josh's Skin Quiz Test Results   Take Action to Heal Your Family's Skin   "It's important that instead of using food to help us feel better, we should deal with what's really underlying there. Find out what are the emotional issues that are going on and address those issues. The sooner you can do that with kids, the better you can help them address their health on their own. It's so much better than to say, "Here's a piece of candy. Everything's gong to be okay." - Dr. Trevor Cates on comfort food and children   To help your family live life with healthy skin and bodies, lead by example. Whether they're 7 or 17, kids will pay attention to what their parents are doing and look up to them. Eat healthy meals and encourage them to do the same. Instead of serving the same traditional kid meals i.e. Mac n' Cheese or hot dogs, introduce new foods at an early stage. Take them to different restaurants such as Thai or Indian to help them learn to appreciate and try different foods. The earlier, the better. Pay attention to your children's dietary needs as well. If you know that some foods affect their skin, teach them what foods are not good for them and what substitutes are better for their health. If you know that your child shouldn't eat gluten or dairy, take a moment to teach them the importance of following their diet. Walk them through a self analysis by asking questions: What did you eat? How did you feel after you ate? How do you feel now? What should you eat in the future? About Dr. Trevor Cates Dr. Trevor Cates received her medical degree from the National College of Natural Medicine and was the first woman licensed as a naturopathic doctor in the state of California. She was appointed by former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to California's Bureau of Naturopathic Medicine Advisory Council and served on the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians’ board. In addition to her medical degree, Dr. Cates has a master’s degree in spiritual psychology from the University of Santa Monica. 082 Tina Muir: Running For Wellness

Tina Muir is a Saucony sponsored professional ELITE runner who recently represented Great Britain in the World Half Marathon Championships. Tina is the Community Manager for RunnersConnect and host of popular running podcast Run to the Top. Tina is originally from St. Albans, UK, now living in Lexington, KY with her husband (and coach) Steve. With PRs of 16:08 (5k), 33:24 (10k), 1:13 (half marathon), 2:41 (marathon), Tina may have elite speed, but she candidly shares what it means to train, live and breathe your dreams (while still maintaining balance!) on her blog tinamuir.com. "Running is a lot like life. The more you persevere through those difficult moments, the better it feels afterwards. I realized early on that if I could persevere better than most people, I would feel so much better knowing that I overcame the mental demons while I was running." - Tina Muir On this podcast, Tina shares her experiences and expertise, what it takes to build a strong body and mind, and most importantly how it feels to use running for life and wellness in an open and honest way. Running For Health, Wellness, and Life Every year hundreds of thousands of new runners lace up their new shoes and hit the pavement striding towards their wellness and health goals.  For Tina, and many of us on the wellness path,  running is more than just breaking a sweat, it's a way of living a wellness based life. Over the past decade and beyond, Tina has worked her way to represent Great Britain as a professional athlete, but her road to the top has not come without busting through many personal and physical thresholds. She believes that whether you're an endomorph, ectomorph, or mesomorph, the right style of running has the potential to change not only your physical health, but to sharpen the edge of your mind. As the community manager of Runners Connect, a pro, and busy wife, she literally runs and walks her talk. From surmounting panic attacks, growing personal power, and upgrading emotional health, Tina believes in following her heart; it's the message she spreads not only on the Run to The Top podcast but on her highly popular running blog called "Fuel Your Future." She reminds us with her life's work how running can be a beautiful mirror for the mental hurdles we all scale. "With running, it's actually us against sabotaging ourselves." - Tina Muir Being Imperfectly Perfect Tina shares openly and honestly in this Wellness Force Radio podcast and on her blog about running outside of the current paradigm where runners are "supposed" to look: "For me, yes I could lose those extra few pounds, but then I risk sending myself down a dark, obsessive path, and it would mean I would not get to enjoy the cake and ice cream that does make me happy, so I would rather stay as I am, but know I am enjoying my food, and staying healthy as a runner.Every single body has something to celebrate. Every single runner has their own unique strengths and weaknesses, and that should be taken into account. Do not spend your life trying to look like someone else, spend your life doing what makes you happy, and the rest will follow." - Tina Muir Resources From The Show Tina's Website "Fuel Your Future" New runner's and checking your stride length Tina's exclusive "Running For Wellness" in depth blog post written for the Wellness Force Radio Audience Run to The Top Podcast Runner's Connect - Resource for global running Tina's blog post: The Privilege of Exhaustion and Chasing Your Dreams Tina's blog post "Do You Look Like A Runner" What You'll Hear On The Show 1:30 Josh discusses today's show topics and Tina's bio 3:20 Introduction to Tina 7:13 Tina's mindset approach to running for wellness for anyone 8:41 The importance of our mental narrative in running and in our wellness 11:02 How to persevere through mental demons in running and life 12:30 Overcoming self sabotage: What goes through the mind of new runner 14:20 Why people use running to let go of old weight and how Tina's sister lost weight through running 16:45 Identifying your body type and if steady state cardio is the right fit for you 18:14 Tina's coaching of why running and strength training must be dine to prevent injuries 20:01 How to train with running for fat loss if you have more than 20 pounds to let go of 21:26 Preventing injuries when starting running no mater your body type 22:45 The reason that 9 times out of 10 new runners have knee problems 23:32 How to cultivate healthy competition with yourself and others 26:45 How to practice self love and self care for the body and mind 29:40 How to persevere through the struggle and why she "reveals too much" 34:20 The gifts of running beyond weight loss, how running can change your life 38:25 Running metaphor for life 39:10 7 for 7 round with Tina and Josh 43:24 Top myth in running: Why running isn't bad for your knees 44:04 Tina's favorite Rocky Balboa quote even though she's from the UK 47:03 The Run to The Top Podcast 49:30 Takeaways from today's show Rate & Review Wellness Force Aloha! 081 Dr. Matt Accurso: From Weight Loss Resistance To High Performance

"I don't want someone to feel that they need my help. I want them to feel empowered about their body. The most powerful part about the whole journey with anyone that I've ever worked with is the long-term sustainable result. I want you to leave my care and I want you to teach your family and other people how to be healthy." - Dr. Matt Accurso on encouraging his health participants to feel empowered about their own health.   Many sources have claimed that we can only combat weight loss resistance and gain high performance energy if we stick to a strict "one fits all" nutrition and exercise regime. However, living a healthy lifestyle isn't just about checking off a doctor's to do list as we go through life. Health goes beyond the surface with a closer look at our body's cells, hormones, gut, and brain connection.  Lead Training Doctor at Designer Health Centers, Dr. Matt Accurso, shares his experience and tips on how we can become health empowered, lose old weight, and gain the energy we crave to develop into high performers.   Become Health Empowered   "Your body has the power to do what it needs to do. All I simply did was address the deficiencies and toxicities and then we let your body heal." - Dr. Matt Accurso on helping his health participants.   When you visit with your physician, don't see yourself as just a patient. Instead of just a patient, you are a health participant because you are there to take control of your own health. A physician can help you with a medical problem that needs to be addressed with a short term solution. However, that one visit is not going to fix all of your health needs. Instead of relying on a physician, specialist, or therapist to fix all of your health problems, take control into your own hands. You are empowered to live a long, healthy journey by making good decisions that will impact your health.     Defeat Weight Loss Resistance   Weight loss resistance happens when the brain is trying to communicate to the body yet cell receptors are blunted so they can't hear what's happening from the brain. By simply adding more good fats in your diet, you actually start to replenish those cells in the thyroid and gut."- Dr. Matt Accurso   Rather than looking at your body as a whole, look at it in parts and pieces like a puzzle. View the body from the outlook of its cells, organs, hormones, micronutrients, and gut health. Everything in the body plays an important part and anything could be preventing you from losing old weight. Many popular diets will help people lose sugar weight, but they're not sustainable for long-term weight (Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, and traditional diets). A long-term diet has to promote proper hormonal function health as well in the brain and body. Two hormones in the body that are key to losing weight are leptin and ghrelin.   Regulate Hormones for Healthy Weight Loss Ghrelin hormones increase hunger in the body and leptin manages energy, weight loss, and reducing appetite. Unlike other diets that focus on low-carb diets and staying away from fats, the Ketogenic Diet focuses on eating healthy fats. Once you've reached the ketosis stage, your body is better at regulating the ghrelin and leptin hormones to help increase weight loss. Not only will Ketosis help increase the body's weight loss, but it will also replenish the body's cells. Once thyroid and gut cells are replenished, they can better community with the brain.   Regain Your Energy Depending on what you eat on a day-to-day basis and your sleep cycle, you may find yourself with either little energy or a sufficient amount to get you through the day. If you find yourself exhausted or getting very little sleep, pay attention to you diet.  If a person does not have enough healthy fats in their diet is consuming too many toxins, they need they pay closer attention to their diet. Without healthy fats and nutrition, a person may have a macronutrient deficiency that is creating interruptions during the REM sleep cycle. If you wake up feeling energized, but then crash after lunch, you might not be getting the nutrients you need to help you rest and regain your energy.  Sleep and diet are key to feeling energized from morning to night. One method is to get into a state of Ketosis so that your body is burning fat on a regular basis. Otherwise, you can make simpler changes to your diet including: Not snacking between meals. Eating a low-carb diet and healthy fats i.e. nuts and seeds. Starting to take vitamins and supplements without USPS vitamins. Following a healthy diet that can increase your energy for higher performance means eating more: Fresh water fish with fatty Omega 3 Free range white meat Grass fed red meat Specific foods with Omega 3 have so many benefits i.e.: Triggering healthy hormones Increasing cell-to-cell communication Improving your brain's and body's health   Beat Fatigue with Neurological Overload Sets One way to beat fatigue is to do Neurological Overload Sets (created by Ben Pakulski). NOS is a functional fitness type approach exercise to help you fatigue your nervous system while fatiguing the muscle by doing 60-80% of your max power and then holding position at the end of each set for about 20 seconds. By overloading the nervous system, you can optimize your energy levels and reconnect the brain synopsis. Other exercises such as Pilates, Tabata, and anything else that includes an isometric hold and nervous system training is great to enhance the brain's memory and function.   Enjoy the Seasons of Life   "Don't beat yourself up if you're going through a season."   As we go through life, we strive to do it all and as hard as we might try, it's impossible to do everything at once. We all go through different seasons or stages of life that come and go as soon as we begin to experience them. Maybe you've already experienced the seasons of beginning college, a career, or your own family? Each season is different and has it's ups and downs that can create stress within the body and mind. To gain more energy and peace of mind, focus on enjoying and respecting that season. Take your time and be easy on yourself. You might have to adjust your schedule and habits according to that season, but that doesn't mean you can stop focusing on your health or what is important to you. Know your triggers and what's going to crush your energy.   Turn to Positive Thinking Because our body is one big puzzle piece, not only are our organs, cells, and brain connected, but our hormones and genetics as well. In fact, our genetics and thoughts give us this amazing power to structure our environment when we turn on the right genes and think positively. But what happens if negative thoughts creep up and block us from achieving high performance? Dr. Matt Accurso has this great system to help him create positive thoughts. If he feels a negative thought comes into his head when he wakes up first thing in the morning, he doesn't get up until he's replaced it with a positive thought in his mind. What does he think about? He turns to thoughts of gratefulness while maintaining a breathing pattern until he feels enough joy and happiness that those negative thoughts have disappeared. If you're experiencing negative thoughts, I encourage you to try this method. I know I will!   Resources From The Show Dr. Matt Accurso Designer Health Centers Sleep Cycle REM app Genomic Guru Bulletproof | Powerful Mind and Body Napoleon Hill Neurological Overload Sets by Ben Pakulski  Molecules Of Emotion: The Science Behind Mind-Body Medicine by Dr. Candace B.
