077 Darryl Edwards: Finding The Joy of Movement

Darryl Edwards is a Movement Coach, Natural Lifestyle Educator and creator of the Primal Play Method;™ developed to inspire others to make activity fun while getting healthier, fitter and stronger in the process.   "Primal Play is about making fitness fun and ensuring that the individual can experience the joy of movement again. Many of us have fallen out of love with movement, and we focus on fitness or exercise which then becomes pain and punishment as the way to get fit. What we should be thinking about is what we can enjoy that will get us there, rather than what we must endure to get fit." - Darryl Edwards   Finding The Joy of Movement Darryl's journey of paleo and natural movement began over ten years ago when he had iron-deficiency anemia, hypertension, and 26 percent body fat. He felt weak, lethargic, and suffered from insomnia along with debilitating lower back and knee pain. It didn’t take long after focusing on the Paleo approach to reap the benefits, and his improved health continues to this day. To eventually lead thousands of people by teaching the joy of movement across the world, Darryl first had to feel the pain of physical discontent early in life. Sitting for hours on end in his banking career, he began to train as most of us start training: in the gym and bored out of his mind. He intuitively felt from deep in his core that there must be a better way to live life well and attain the health and wellness he knew he deserved. This is a sad reality that many gym goers, marathoners, and weekend warriors discover once their "no pain no gain" mentality simply can't support the lifestyle any longer. Listen as Darryl unpacks how anyone and everyone can learn to experience the joy of movement wherever they are and whatever health goals they might have.   Movement Breakthroughs What  sparked radical change in Darryl's life was essentially finding the joy of play;  a reconnection to his childhood and the memories that brought happiness. This discovery would come to be the catalyst for greater health in his own adult life. In the video below from the ancestral health symposium in 2016,  Darrell discusses  his primal play method,  what it means to have physical health,  how to transform the current paradigm of exercise and fitness,  and gives an incredible lecture on physical activity for the new era.   What You'll Learn From This Episode Why your body is in pain and what to do about it How to make your workouts fun again no matter who you are How to turn your workouts into play The benefits of training in primal movement patterns The differences between "paleo" fitness and regular fitness and exercise Action steps to begin the integration of movement as play Darryl's story about how he transitioned from working out in gyms to 100% functional movement Resources Mentioned In The Show   Darryl's Website - Primal Play 7 Day Introduction To Paleo Fitness by Darryl Edwards  Transform Your Workouts Into Play - Wellness Force Radio EP 014 Paleo from A to Z: A reference guide to better health through nutrition and lifestyle Fitness Explorer on facebook Fitness Explorer on Twitter   More About Darryl Edwards Darryl is a Movement Coach, Natural Lifestyle Educator and creator of the Primal Play Method;™ developed to inspire others to make activity fun while getting healthier, fitter and stronger in the process. 076 Josh Trent: Vipassana Meditation: A Spartan Race For The Mind

"In my life I've done a lot of physical things like marathons, challenge races and weight training, but vipassana was one of the hardest things I've ever done because it was so dependent purely on the mind. When we work out and go through physical pain, you can push through it because there's a stimulus there. When you sit in silence, the hardest part about it is that's there is nothing else to do besides face your thoughts, face your feelings, and face what's going on inside." - Josh Trent   Vipassana Meditation - 10 Days In The Desert of Your Soul Today's show welcomes fitness and wellness celebrity Scott Colby as our guest host interviewing Wellness Force Founder, Josh Trent, on his 10 day Vipassana meditation experience in Joshua Tree, CA at the Dhamma Southern California Vipassana Center . This episode is for you if you've never meditated in your life and it has always been something you've wanted to try, or even if you're a seasoned meditator looking for that next step on how to grow your life's practice. We're also going to discuss Scott Colby's partnership with Pencils of Promise and his incredible service to Guatemalan children schools through the "say it with gratitude stationary sets" fund raiser towards the end of the episode which Wellness Force is honored to support.   Why do hundreds of thousands of people globally complete an annual vipassana? Most students embark on a vipassana with the intention to achieve greater inner peace and harmony through the mental training of "thought purification" which allows one to face life's tensions and problems in a calm, balanced way. Vipassana meditation, essentially, is a practice of what founder Mr. S.N. Goenka calls "The Art of Living" that one can use to get out of their own way to begin making greater positive contributions in society. This may sound empowering and healing, which many studies report to be true, but be warned: this practice is not for everyone, rather it is only for the one who feels called to it at the right time in their life. As Yogi & Best-selling Author Karan Bajaj says: "Just sitting with your spine erect for eleven hours a day can be a challenge, now add complete silence and two sparse meals a day to it, and you’re guaranteed some level of physical and emotional agony."   Why You Get To Do A Vipassana Meditation is a essentially a practice that teaches focusing attention inwards. This could be done with a mantra, breathing techniques, or by using visualizations. There are numerous ways to practice meditation, and all of them center around becoming more self aware. The main difference of vipassana however is found in its technique of "body scanning" that students learn through a process of relaxation without the normal stimuli of instant gratification it has become so accustomed to and even in some cases, addicted to. In an era filled with the weapons of mass distraction, vipassana arms students with the tools they can use to rise above mindless actions in our modern world. Because of the long durations of sittings in the training, vipassana allows the student to discover powerful insights about the subconscious roots of their unresolved anger, discontent, and other emotional issues. Once these issues can be seen, felt, and worked through in silence, a new mental narrative can be spoken which helps to lower overall stress and anger while boosting future emotional balance and mental health. Vipassana training is also helpful in maintaining emotional balance, treating neurosis, and other unhealthy emotional conditions. The foundation of the vipassana practice is sīla — moral conduct. Sīla provides a basis for the development of samādhi — concentration of mind; and purification of the mind is achieved through paññā — the wisdom of insight.   Benefits of vipassana include: Lowered blood pressure Reduced cortisol levels Corrected circadian rhythm Increased body awareness leading to lifestyle change Increased mental faculties for memory, cognition, and decision making Insights on how to let go of existential stressors The formations of new healthy habits Increased patience and persistence in the tasks of everyday life   "I became interested in this vipassana journey about 4 months ago after interviewing Karan Bajaj on the podcast and felt the pull to go to the desert for the 10 days of silent meditation. When I arrived and sat for the first night, I quickly felt just how intense and demanding these 10 days would be." - Josh Trent   The Benefits of Delayed Gratification In our current society, where smart phones and calendars rule, if we're not paying attention, it is far too easy to become a slave to the mind. By intentionally practicing the art of delayed gratification with Vipassana, students begin noticing the difference in thought processes where they can consciously control the directions of which the Amygdala sends its impulses. Beyond just the physical challenges of sitting in silence for 100+ hours in 10 days on the body, the long stillness and silence also supports the growth of new synapses where increased mental toughness, patience, and delayed gratification can further develop.   Benefits of practicing delayed gratification include: Increased happiness Improvements in practicing gratitude Greater financial habits and health Improved physical health Higher levels of appreciation   “One can have no smaller or greater mastery than mastery of oneself.” — Leonardo da Vinci   A Spartan Race For The Mind For the 10 days of the course, all students agree to maintain "noble silence" which includes refraining from talking, exercising, looking at other students, and communicating by hand gestures with other students. With the removal of all stimuli, the metaphor of vipassana is like "a spartan race for the mind."   As Josh Trent says: "By day 7 - I had had enough.  7 grueling days of going through what felt like excruciating pain with a numbness in my butt and a stabbing in my hips I'd never experienced before. The 4am wake up gong at my window. Two hours of meditation before a breakfast of oatmeal. The strict daily routine in the confined environments. No writing, reading, or exercise. There were around 100+ of us sitting in a dimly lit meditation hall sun up to sun down. The distractions of modern life—phones, work, movies, music, — all gone. All that is left do do is sit for 7-10 hours a day in total silence and breathe. I glanced around and could see I wasn't the only one struggling. I had a few really bad days on 3 and 5, and on day 7 my only solace was living hour by hour. Among the pain, there were moments, sometimes even a 30 minute blocks where I felt waves of compassion and love so profoundly, that I almost didn't know how to deal with them. But I did. And when I emerged on the other side after the 10 days, I left the center with a clean mind, immense gratitude for life, and love and compassion for family, friends, an colleagues like never before." - Josh Trent     Links From Today's Show Southern California Vipassana Center Vipassana Meditation - Dhamma.org Scott Colby's "Say It With Gratitude Stationary Sets" Scott Colby's Ultimate Gratitude Summit Dr. John Gray's Interview With Josh Dr. John Gray's Work With Meditation Karan Bajaj's Interview With Josh Trent Karan Bajaj's Vipassana Blog Sarah Maxwell - San Diego Mindfulness Meditation Teacher   Rate & Review Wellness Force Aloha! 075 Jeff Agostinelli: Breaking Free From Chronic Thinking

"The point of identifying emotion and navigating emotion is not to hold on to it, but to be able to recognize it and to understand that it's trying to tell us something." - Jeff Agostinelli   It's easy to get ahead of ourselves and allow our emotions to control our lives, but that's not the purpose of our emotions. Our emotions are the tools we need to help us break through from chronic thinking.  This week, Life Coach, Business Coach, and Podcast Host of The Next Level, Jeff Agostinelli, shares how we can take advantage of our emotions to truly listen to ourselves in order to think clearly, rediscover joy, and be free from pain.   Break the Cycle of Chronic Thinking   "A lot of people will try to reach out and they're stuck in a pattern of thought. We have an emotion and then there's a thought, there's an action, there's a behavior, there's a habit and they're all connected. Who's to say that we can't just move one of those things around and everything else will change?"- Jeff Agostinelli   When we're feeding into our emotions, we can find ourselves stuck in connecting thoughts, habits, and behaviors. But what if we try to change something? What then happens to our emotions? If we try to change something in the way we think or act, it can create a new path for us to follow. We may be afraid of change and think that we can't change our lives. But we can change when we or another person takes a close look at what's going on in our lives. To help us get started on breaking free from the cycle of chronic thinking, we must start by asking ourselves honest questions such as: Do I really love my environment? Do I really love want I'm doing? Do I really love this relationship? When we break free from chronic thinking, we get in touch with our emotions and move forward.    Tap Into Your Emotions   "The gift inside of pain is the true expression of what the pain is meant to wake us up to. So if we're experiencing pain in a certain moment of our life, it's a momentary thing to let us know, "Okay, look, this thing has got to change." - Jeff Agostinelli   It can be painful and strange to tap into our emotions, but it's the number one thing that we can manipulate and utilize to help us move forward. If we're experiencing pain from outliers such as our environment or other people, we can manipulate what we feel. We just need to take a close look at the situation to recognize ourselves and what we're feeling. The point of identifying  and navigating emotion is not to hold on to it, but to be able to recognize it and to understand that it's trying to tell us something. To tap into your emotions. Ask yourself the right questions to help you reach an understanding with yourself. Don't ask questions such as: Why can't I find a boyfriend/girlfriend? What's going on? Why do they have to be so hard work with? Ask yourself: Why am I creating these habits? Why do I feel this way? Why did I act like that?   Find Clarity In Your Thoughts We're constantly evolving so in order to understand our emotions and feelings of pain, we need to re-assess ourselves regularly. When we're starting to feel pain again, we need to look at our top priorities and discover what's missing. We need to take some time give ourselves some self-care and self-love. Part of this process is to find clarity in our thoughts. Here are three ways that Jeff suggests we find clarity in ourselves: 1. Meditation Meditation allows us to give our bodies the space that it needs. It really helps us tap into our emotions and break free from chronic thinking. 2. Writing Writing allows use to get all of those thoughts to get out of our minds and onto the physical piece of paper. This is a much stronger therapeutic practice than just talking about we're thinking because we're putting it into a deeper physical practice. 3. Movement Movement can be whatever we want it to be-running, dancing, swimming, jumping etc. Movement is the practice that allows our bodies to do what they're meant to do: move. We're not created for sitting or standing all day. Movement gives your body and mind what it needs to help it calm down.   About Jeff Agostinelli With a background in studying pre-med biology and working as a private chef, Jeff wanted to take his knowledge about food, healing, natural health, and a healthy lifestyle to help others. Eventually, Jeff's journey led him to become a personal Life and Business Coach. Jeff is also the host of The Next Level Podcast where the goal is to inspire, educate, and deliver simple techniques by extracting key lessons from those who have already been there.   What You'll Hear On The Show 3:55  About Jeff Agostinelli 4:40  What habits have you kept from childhood and what have you let go? 10:50  What is a macrobiotics diet? 074 Jake Ducey: Creating The Life We Love

"Everyone can relate to sitting in a spot and you don't feel like you're supposed to be there and you're meant for something more. You could be 45 years old sitting at a desk in an office and you feel like you're selling yourself short and you've been lying to yourself your whole life about who you are and what you're capable so you're just limiting your dreams." -Jake Ducey   We've all experienced a moment when we're not happy with our life. We've reached a moment when we know we need something else to become who we're truly meant to be. However, it can be difficult to know where to begin and how we can accomplish our goals. Today,three-timed publish author, speaker, and leader, Jake Ducey, shares how we can create a life that we love. To get started on living a fulfilling life, Jake will explain how the subconscious mind works to help our intuition, how to identify and own our vibrations, and how to live a life that we love.  Take Advantage of Your Subconscious Mind To be successful and live a life that you love, it's all about living a life that you feel good about. To do this, you must listen to your own thoughts and senses. Unfortunately, many people are limited by their mindsets and their emotions are controlling their thoughts. Not only is it important to understand how our thinking process works, but how we can use our subconscious to our advantage. The unconscious mind is a wonderful thing and it acts as a filtering device for outside reality. Outside reality can be anything from thoughts about love, body image, money, or career that we hear from other people, the public media, and even Facebook. And these pieces of outside reality create barriers that keep us from listening to our inner reality and intuition. Once you begin to listen to your intuition and emotions, your inner vibrations can tell you the truths about who you are and who you're meant to be. Learn to Listen to Your Inner Vibrations   "When you disconnect from your senses, you get in touch with a deeper vision. You can see your life and who you want to be and who you're supposed to be. You can hear the intuition and the soul and the heart speak to you in a faint voice that you can't really hear because the noise of the world is so loud."-Jake Ducey   Thoughts from the outside world can keep us down, but so can our own senses and emotions. When we're controlled by different senses and emotions, we become unfocused. Things that we want like good grades in school or a higher salary send vibrations and senses that control our every move. By disconnecting from outside noise and really listening to our emotions, we can tune in to what our unconscious thoughts and energy vibrations are telling us. In the end, you come to realize that the truth relies in your own reality. What creates reality is yourself and not your senses nor vibrations. Change Your Life with Visualization   "If you hold a vision within yourself, two things can happen: You eventually give up or you start talking to yourself about how it's not going to happen or it's not happening."- Jake Ducey   We think in images, not words. If you can control the images within your head, then you can control your mind and essentially your life.  But sometimes, outside thoughts and images can create roadblocks. These images can be anything from what we see on the news, from social media, to a chat with our coworkers. Fortunately, you were born with this powerful mind to create whatever you want to create. Don't listen to what other people tell you what you can and can't do. Visionaries don't accept the outside world and they don't allow it to hold them back from doing what they want to do. You have to think of what you want to think. Don't fill yourself with negativity and everything that's going on in the outside world. Block out the outer world. focus and believe in your inner world more.  First Steps to Create a Life That You Love Create a life that you love by setting goals for yourself and give a new meaning to things in your life such as your education or your career. Another way is to increase your own value and don't change what you do. Stick with your job and work on being more comfortable with yourself and the tasks that go along with your job. You can increase your value and not change what you do by growing your skills and increasing your self-image. Accomplishments like that can help you grow in your career and start you on a path a position that you love, a new company to work for, or a better salary. It's not where you are in your career, but the meaning that you give to your career and the value that you create from it.  To move forward in your life, what do you want to create? People such as Jay-Z, Steve Jobs, the Wright Brothers didn't listen to the outside world. Instead, they were so ambitious and successful because they had these inner visions and images. Their inner world helped them become who they wanted to be and do what they wanted to do with their lives.   About Jake Ducey At only 25 years old Jake Ducey is a three-time published author with Penguin/RandomHouse (The Purpose Principles and Profit From Happiness), a leading speaker for his generation having been featured in TEDx Youth, hired by mega organizations such as Nielsen and Accenture, and a leader who has already inspired countless thousands of young people to seek meaningful career success and to make a difference in the world. TEDx Youth Talks featured Jake on their stage, the Van’s Warped Tour made Jake Ducey their first ever-inspirational speaker for their entire 42-city 2015 summer tour in front of 500,000 Millennials and their parents. “High School Nation” sent Jake on a 30 high school inspirational speaking tour, the number one talent agency in the world CAA (Creative Artist’s Agency), signed Jake, and school districts across Southern California have begun to implement his first book “Into the Wind” as required reading along with a teaching curriculum he helped design. 073 Kute Blackson: Trusting The Process & Breaking Conditioned Responses

"The true spiritual practice is learning to love no matter what. Not when everything is perfect. Not when you feel like loving. This is the layer that we must peel in order to access our soul." - Kute Blackson  On this week’s podcast, best-selling author, speaker, and transformational teacher, Kute Blackson, shares how we can forgive and let go by observing who we are through listening to what our emotions are telling us. Forgiving and letting go of the past can be two of the hardest things a person may face during their lifetime. Sharing his own personal story of the relationship with his father and how he came the USA, Kute explains how we can be brave and allow our internal compass on the wellness journey can guide us through life. How To Live Life Itself As Your Spiritual Practice  Living your life means making your own decisions and taking control. To help us along our wellness journey, look for signs that a path is right for us. This will allow us to be true to ourselves in a way that the universe supports us each stop of the way. If you feel that a path is not right for you, listen to that gut feeling. Maybe your mind is telling you one thing, but your emotions and feelings are telling you something completely different. Be Willing To Tell The Truth "When we live in alignment, then the universe will support us, but it may not look how we always think it will."- Kute Blackson  We have to be willing to by true to ourselves and we can feel that truth in our hearts. Maybe a current job isn't lined up with our morals or beliefs? Maybe we're in a relationship with the wrong person? At a point in Kute's life, he was following his father's footsteps to take his role, but then he realized that this path was not for him. Kute spent a lot of time observing his thoughts and emotions. He eventually realized that his life was supposed to take him on a different wellness journey. This wouldn't be the first time that this thought process allowed Kute to come to a revelation of what his mind and body were telling him. With this practice, Kute is continuously learning to let go and accept what path is next for him to follow. When The Path Is Difficult Following your path can be so difficult with many obstacles, struggles, and tests. However, just like they did for Kute, these moments prepare us for the people that we should be. Part of letting go is just allowing yourself to trusting each step of the journey. If we can trust, life will give us what our soul most needs the most right at the very moment in which we need it. Letting Go of Worry Why worry so much? Most of the time, we're afraid of what our destiny truly is, and we're afraid that we have to control everything. To let go of worry, we first have to be willing to surrender and trust the process. When we're children, we're free to be just as we are and we trust right away and express ourselves however we want because we're unconditioned. But as we grow older, we become conditioned. Part of early-life conditioning is believing that we're not free and this keeps us from trusting other people and our own authentic voice. Breaking Conditioned Responses Breaking conditioned responses begins once we've taken the honest emotional inventory within ourselves. Conditioning tells us that we're a certain persona and so we try to figure out who we should be. This helps us avoid pain because we feel validated by society because our persona has been accepted. But we cannot truly break condition responses until we've accepted ourselves. Part of accepting ourselves is observing our thoughts and emotions.  When we observe ourselves, we begin to stop judging ourselves. And as we practice being the observer, we can break the reinforcements of the previous negative thoughts about who we really are. "We have over 65,000 thoughts a day and most are the same as yesterday. Your thoughts are not real, your thoughts are just energy. Your thoughts aren't the issue. The importance you give your thoughts is the real issue." - Kute Blackson  Win Two Tickets To Kute's LIVE Event Kute was generous to Wellness Force, and he’s giving away two advanced tickets to his “Man Breakthrough Experience” October 14th in Los Angeles. Generosity makes our goals more powerful by giving them a greater purpose than our own self interest, and brings greater abundance into our lives. Integrity - Helps us to not create new obstructions that impede our progress. It allows us to learn lessons about the intensity and frequency of our vicious cycles, and the negative consequences that we experience because of them. It also brings more intimacy and connection into our lives. Patience - Helps us to not take our current obstructions and blow them out of proportion, making them even bigger barriers to progress. In fact, lack of patience does the opposite of progress– it turns our mountains into molehills. Brings more growth and transformation into our lives. Inspired Action - Helps us to cultivate more of what we really want in our lives, rather than trying to move us away from what we don't want. It also brings more joy and fulfillment into our lives. Mindfulness - Helps to free us from attachments that keep us feeling stuck in life. It is the inner essence and the common thread of all of the previous practices, and as necessary in order for them to be powerful and effective. It also allows us to experience true freedom. Commitment - It is the outer container that gives shape and direction to all the previous practices. It also gives us the ability to stick with the other practices long enough for them to blossom and have a noticeable effect on our lives. 071 Melissa Hartwig: Food Freedom Forever

"This is not like any other nutrition program you've ever stumbled across. You have to think about it differently in terms of it being just one part of a lifelong cycle." - Melissa Hartwig   Pushing Your Reset Button With Your Health, Habits, & Relationship With Food On this week's podcast, you’ll learn from an exceptional woman who has dedicated her life to driving real transformations in physical and emotional wellness. In this hour, together we’ll discover the connections between your emotions and healthy habits to live your best life and enjoy the process. Sparking real, sustainable transformation and creating food freedom begins when we do the emotional inventory with ourselves. This can be a tricky process when starting out, especially when taking the honest look at how we're showing up in our relationship with food is the only way through. But there's science behind why we get stuck, and how we can change. It happens when we're hungry and open to the right answers.  As Melissa writes in her first book, It Starts With Food:   "Ancient signals in a modern world: Food scientists have engineered chemicals in processed foods that light up the reward centers in the brain for a different reason than nature intended- not because they provide vital nutrition, but because they are scientifically designed to stimulate our tastes buds."    About Melissa Hartwig Melissa Hartwig is a Certified Sports Nutritionist who specializes in helping people change their relationship with food and create life-long, healthy habits. She is the co-creator of the original Whole30 program, the New York Times bestselling author of The Whole30 and It Starts With Food. Melissa has been featured by Dr. Oz, Good Morning America, the Wall Street Journal, Details, Shape, Outside, and SELF. Melissa has also presented more than 150 health and nutrition seminars worldwide, and provides support to more than 1.5 million people a month through the Whole30 website.   "We're often told that it's selfish to take care of yourself first, but I look at it as an act of radical self love. I set boundaries in my life so that I am healthy, happy and so that I flourish in my life and I have more to give to everyone else." - Melissa Hartwig   Melissa's New Book: Food Freedom Forever Letting Go of Bad Habits, Guilt, and Anxiety Around Food End the yo-yo dieting cycle… forever. Welcome to the Food Freedom plan. Millions of people have successfully completed the groundbreaking Whole30 program and radically transformed their energy, sleep, cravings, waistline, and health. Now, Food Freedom Forever offers real solutions for anyone stuck in the exhausting cycle of yo-yo dieting and the resulting stress, weight gain, uncontrollable cravings, and health complaints. In her newest book, best-selling author Melissa Hartwig defines true “food freedom” as being in control of the food you eat, instead of food controlling you.   Food Freedom Forever gives you everything you need for achieving dietary success, for today and for the rest of your healthy life. Melissa Hartwig’s information is spot on in terms of its scientific validity, and wonderfully approachable in terms of its implementation. — DAVID PERLMUTTER, MD, Author, #1 New York Times Bestseller, Grain Brain   Resources Mentioned In This Episode The Whole30 Book - New York times Best-seller It Starts With Food - New York times Best-seller Melissa's New Book - Food Freedom Forever Melissa & Dallas Hartwig on ABC's Nightline Melissa & Dallas Hartwig on Dr. Oz The Whole30 Website The Whole9 Website Melissa's Author Page on Facebook Whole30 on Facebook Win a FREE copy of "The Whole30 & "It Starts With Food" Enter to win by posting a picture of your favorite whole30 meal on Instagram and tag @wellnessforce #whole30  Practical Spirituality With Adam Farrah Byron Katie's Work - Inspired Melissa in her life "Loving What Is" by Byron Katie What You'll Hear On The Show 2:00 About Melissa Hartwig 4:45 Melissa shares a few things we don"t know about her 7:45 Melissa's road to creating the Whole30 and her tipping point 9:00 Why Melissa used joy instead of struggle to launch Whole30 and it Starts With Food 10:50 The difference between west coasters vs. east coasters and their relationships with food 12:00 Melissa unpacks what the Whole3o is, how it resets the body, and who it's for 14:30 A life changing story of an older man who transformed his relationship with food by doing Whole30 17:50 Your brain on food: Melissa explains her favorite chapter of "It Starts With Food" 21:15 Melissa explains the difference between satiety and satiation 24:30 Foods with "no brakes" and gateway foods 25:29 The healing power of grass fed hydrolyzed collagen 28:30 The psychology of change model and how to change 30:16 Dealing with anxiety on the Whole30 and in your life 33:30 Melissa discusses shame spirals and her new book Food Freedom Forever 36:07 How to feel like you're enough and worthy of being healthy, lean, athletic and fully present 40:16 Melissa and Josh discuss wearables and using trackers for obligers and upholders 41:20 Why Josh started and hosts Wellness Force Radio 45:51 Being authentic, intuitively vulnerable, and empowering on social media with the Whole30 46:46 7 for 7 round: Josh asks Melissa 7 fast questions 55:13 Win a copy of It Starts With Food and Whole30   Rate & Review Wellness Force Aloha! 070 Tony Federico: How To Feed Your Body & Soul

"Food is what you are, and you are what you eat. Food serves multiple purposes. On one hand, it's to nourish your body with physical things that it needs, but you can also use food to soothe emotions, avoid emotions, as entertainment, or when you feel sad. It allows for a certain degree of emotional manipulation." - Tony Federico   Food is an important part of our everyday life, but sometimes we allow unhealthy, processed foods to manipulate our bodies' health and emotions. Unfortunately, eating healthy is not always an easy switch to make with big multinational corporations selling and promoting foods everywhere we look. However, we have the ultimate power to make the decision to decide what we eat every day. Take a moment look inside yourself and ask if your relationship with food is a healthy one. It's okay to admit that it's not a healthy relationship and that you're ready for a change in your life. On this week's podcast, host of the Paleo Magazine Radio podcast, Tony Federico, shares with us how he overcame an unhealthy relationship with food and how making a goal to live a more Paleolithic lifestyle has transformed his body and his life. How To Create A Healthy Relationship With Food As humans that operate from the reptilian brain, what do we ultimately need to thrive? We need real food. Take a moment to think about where our ancestors found their source of food. It wasn't from the processed food section from the grocery store, but from real foods like fruits, nits, seeds, vegetables and different meats. If you are what you eat, then your relationship with food can say a lot about whether you are tuned in with your body or not. Tony himself struggled for quite some time to create a healthy relationship with food. At one point, he found himself in a cycle of doing unhealthy amounts of exercise and eating processed foods that he believed to be healthy. In looking back on his lifestyle, Tony discusses on the show how his obsession of eating healthy food was called Orthorexia nervosa before it even existed. To create a healthy relationship with food, Tony shares how we first get to understand how it helps our body. How all of natural foods' nutrients, vitamins, and more give you the energy and strength to live a healthy life each day. Feeding Yourself From A Place of Love & Abundance "Maybe my body is not the enemy. Maybe I can work with this thing if I understand it."- Tony Federico on the Paleo Diet  What does your life balance look like right now? Maybe the mix includes: Nutrition Relationships Career Health Friends Fitness But is everything balanced evenly? What areas do you dedicate your time to the most? Which areas are healthy and which are unhealthy? If your health and nutrition are not at the best place that they can be, you may have to change your daily nutrition. For Tony, going Paleo helped him to rethink the benefits of food and a healthy lifestyle. To give your body the love and abundance that it needs to stay healthy, real food can help give you the right mindset and positive energy that you need in your life. If you're eating unhealthy, it can throw you off balance in all six areas of your life. Reach Your Goals With Reverse Engineering One method to help you complete a goal is to do it via "reverse engineering." Reverse engineering goals is when you pick a specific goal and decide what types of systems, people, and environment you can put into place to help you reach that goal. As part of the goal, you need to have a base number, but it's very important that you have zero judgement towards that number. For example, if you want to lose 20 pounds and your base start number is 200 pounds. Don't judge that number because it will only lead to negative thinking. Instead, use it to help you see the results that you want. Next, do your homework to start planning and creating a strategy. Be responsible and have the will and commitment to do it. Even if your plan isn't working,  think about what can you do to change it so that it does work? The slightest tweak can help you get to the goal that you want to complete if you have the willpower to complete it. More About Tony Federico Tony is the host of the Paleo Magazine Radio podcast, author of an eBook audio program deep dish, "Paleo Grilling: A Modern Caveman's Guide to Cooking with Fire", and Cofounder of Powerful PT, an innovative information resource for Fitness Professionals. He has appeared on numerous local and national television and radio broadcasts and regularly hosts healthy cooking workshops and informational lectures. 069 Natalie Vartanian & Bob Schwenkler: The Sex & Wellness Connection

"The quality of our sex life is a direct reflection of our internal health."-Bob Schwenkler  On this week's podcast, trained life coaches and founders of Sex the Podcast, Natalie Vartanian and Bob Schwenkler, join me to talk about relationships, sex, and wellness. Since joining forces as a power couple in 2015, Natalie and Bob have been the secret sexual weapon for successful men from all walks of life. They’ve helped many people from former Army Sniper Instructors, Online Marketing Experts, to Corporate Airline Pilots from across 3 continents unlock the next level of joy and confidence in their sex lives and relationships. Meeting someone new and beginning a romantic relationship with them can create one of the most exhilarating feelings that you will experience during your lifetime. However, your emotional wellness plays a huge part in not only your health and fitness, but also your sex life. Past relationships and experiences can really effect new relationships, who you are, and who you want to become. Each time you begin a new relationship with someone, it's important to address anything that's going on with yourself. If you're emotionally unsteady because you have bottled up feelings of anger, sadness, and trauma on the inside, not only will it show up in your daily fitness and wellness health, but in your personal relationships and sex life as well. To have a healthy sex life, you need to be healthy on the inside by addressing any hidden issues or baggage that you may be carrying with you.    How to Recognize and Share Your Personal Feelings In a relationship, it's important to recognize how you feel and not to ignore those feelings. Ask yourself, what do you want in a relationship? What do you want for your sex life? What do you want for your career and the rest of your life? For you to be able to recognize your feelings and open up to your partner about your wants and desires, you should first become intimate with yourself. You can do this by giving yourself self-care and self-love.  Begin by slowing down and taking a moment to understand what is going on with you. Try to be in the present and recognize what emotions you're feeling right now. Come back to yourself and be honest with what you want and need. Learn To Understand Your Partner's Love Language When you understand yourself better, you can learn to listen to your partner better as well. However, miscommunication or no communication can still happen throughout a relationship. Fortunately, coaches like Natalie and Bob can help you can fix that by using strategies and tools to help open up and improve communication with your partner.  These communication tools can help you both to understand each other's love language, what your desires are, and how you can recreate something in your relationship.  To understand your partner's love language, it may mean unpacking any baggage and talking about issues that you haven't even discussed about in the past. How to Get Out Of A Shame Spiral Something that can keep us back from having a fulfilling relationship and sex life is the shame that we feel for ourselves. This shame spiral can happen to us when we don't feel good in our own bodies or the person that we are. If you're feeling shameful, it could be happening because you're in a constant pattern of avoidance. This pattern occurs when we're stuck in an unhealthy routine that doesn't allow us to find out what's really going on with ourselves. This pattern of avoidance could include having lots of unfulfilling sex, drinking, working a lot, spending time on social media, or even just rational thinking.  Rational thinking mode is a thought addiction and surprisingly enough, over-thinking will keep you from having connected, fulfilling relationships. To have a better sex life, you should look deep inside yourself and have an internal inquiry. Ask yourself what's holding you back from having great sex and even other experiences such as an amazing life or career?  To help you truly escape this shame spiral and begin having fulfilling relationships and great sex, reach out to sources of support and help if you must do so. Don't Be Afraid To Reach Out For Help If you're struggling with your emotions and your shame spiral is keeping you from connecting with your partner, don't be afraid to reach out for help.  Because we're only human, we can't take this journey all by ourselves. Talk to close friends about what you're going through and maybe they've been through the same obstacles. 068 Glenn Stokoe: The Science of Letting Go

On this week’s podcast, floating and sensory deprivation expert, Glenn Stokoe, shares his personal experience with meditation and why floating creates the perfect environment to deepen a mediation practice that helps the body and mind to recover, align and fully relax. "We store so much energy, not only in our psychology, but in our muscular skeletal system that when we float, our body gets to unwind and just finally take that breath it's been craving so much." - Joe Rogan Meditation has been studied for centuries as a powerful tool that supports us in letting go of what doesn't serve our growth. With traditional meditation however, it can take years to reach the clarity and inner peace we desire. With a new modality of healing called "floating," you can reach a state of ultimate relaxation with just a few sessions. Science is also proving that the burgeoning field of sensory deprivation through floating can be a powerful way to heal the mind and body alike. Floating is not only a great empowering tool to help lift our spirits and clear our thoughts, but it is also fun and can allow us to bring more creativity into our lives.  Whether you suffer from stress, cloudy thinking, or chronic pain, floating is for everyone and it can help us let go of everything in order to simply just "be." The Science of Letting Go As the founder of Float North County in San Diego, California, Glenn has helped numerous athletes and spiritual seekers recover from pain and clear their minds. Since his first float in 2013, Glenn's personal exploration in floating has included completing sessions that have lasted up to 3 hours and his own 30 day journey of floating and meditation. If you want to recover from chronic pain, improve your athletic performance, or re-energize your mind and body, floating can help you rediscover yourself and let go of anything that is holding you back.  What is a Float Studio? At a float studio, the floating experience takes place in an enclosed space that looks similar to a large hot tub. The floating tank is about 8 feet long by 5 feet wide and can be between 5-7 feet in height. The tank is filled with 1,1oo pounds of Epsom salt which is made up of magnesium sulfate that allows you to float effortlessly in just 11 inches of water. The water's temperature is set to match the temperature of your skin so that you're completely balanced and it feels like you're floating in almost nothing.  A lot of people who are claustrophobic may be hesitant to try floating, but once they're in the large tank, they find that they feel fine in the water. Floating effortlessly in warm water in an enclosed space can bring a lot of comfort to us. In addition, the Epsom magnesium salts keeps you completely buoyant so it's very easy to float and just let go of everything that you're feeling. You don't have to worry about water getting on your face or into your eyes. Watch the video with Wellness Force Founder, Josh Trent, as he interview Glenn Stokoe live at the float studio! Who Visits Float Studios? Floating studios are for anyone and everyone. However, the people who benefit from them the most can include athletes and people who suffer from chronic pains or varying forms of stress and anxiety. When you're in float tank, you're in an environment where you're not affected by gravity and you're absorbing all the magnesium from Epsom salts. This is perfect to help your body recover and relax. Many professional teams including the Golden State Warriors and the Chicago Cubs now have their own float tanks. They have found that floating helps their athletes visualize for upcoming games, recover fast from injuries, and help re-evaluate what they did during the last game to make a real mind and body connection. According to Glenn, these float tanks can be your best, personal, development tool because you can easily listen to your mind and body. If you can learn to be sensitive and  pay attention to what is going on with your body, then it can alert you to whether or not a future injury may happen and you can actively prevent it from occurring. How Much Time Should You Spend in a Float Tank? According to Glenn, 90 minutes is the perfect amount of time to spend in a float tank. Now you may be asking yourself, "Isn't 90 minutes a lot of time to spend all  by yourself in just water?" To help you get into a state of complete relaxation, 90 minutes is key to allow your body and mind to reach a circadian state of rhythm (at 45 minutes). When you first try floating, 90 minutes may seem like a lot, but some people actually prefer and benefit from floating for over 2.5 hours. Depending on why you attend floating sessions and whether it's for chronic pain or anxiety and stress, how often you go during the first sessions can differ from person to person. If you float for chronic pain, it's recommended that you go 8-9 times over the course of 3 weeks. If you float for anxiety and stress, you should go 6-7 times over 2 weeks for results. Once you've gotten into a rhythm of spending time in a floating tank, you don't have to go as often, but  you should try to go on a regular basis for ongoing results that can benefit your life. This may be anywhere from 2 times a week to once a month depending on your reason for going and how much you need it. How Can Floating Help You to Let Go? "Consciousness is knowing that we're a force and we get to direct our force by choice." - Josh Trent According to Glenn, it's natural that the first float won't be the most productive float for you. Your thoughts can be in another place because everything is so new and you're brain is so focused on taking it all in. However, each time you float, you'll be able to relax your body and mind faster to reach a higher state of meditation because your brain and body will be accustomed to being in the float tank. "Negative thoughts can overtake your thinking and your ego can take over because you're amazed by what you're doing, but floating lets you ultimately shut that out completely because all you can hear is your own breath and your heartbeat. Simply letting go is a very big part of the floating experience. You have to enter the float tank knowing that you're not going to control the float, but to just let go." - Glenn Stokoe Not only have athletes found floating tanks to be extremely helpful, but people who suffer from chronic pain, stress, and symptoms such as PTSD have walked away from their first session feeling amazing. If you're overloaded by work, many have found that a float tank allows for clearer thinking for ideas. Instead of spending time overthinking about a situation to find a solution, a float tank can naturally help you have new ideas and  "aha" moments because you've allowed yourself to let go. "How can we create as human beings if we're constantly reacting to what we're receiving and we can't respond to it?" - Josh Trent What You'll Hear on the Show 0:00  Wellness Force Show Opening 3:00  Introduction to Glenn Stokoe 4:00  Why did you form Float North County?  What was your journey? 7:00 What is floating? 8:30  How did you set up your floating center business?
