Top 3 Takeaways From The Show We've all had moments when we say "I'm too stressed" or "I'm so busy with everything." Fortunately, we have the power to recognize that stress and turn our feelings around. We don't have to allow stress to take control of our lives. Instead, we can find productive ways to use it and handle it. Regularly check in with your mind and body to see how you're doing. Taking a couple of moments each do to be mindful can help you recognize what your emotions or literal gut feelings are telling you. Meditate, walk, or journaling can help you get in touch with yourself and discover what you need. Following the Four Fundamental Steps in the Immune System Recovery Plan, be conscious about what you eat and drink as well as your stress levels. Treating our bodies naturally is possible without taking so many antibiotics for long periods of time. Power Quotes From Dr. Blum [tweetthis] "Functional medicine can heal the gut, detoxify the body, and help manage and measure stress levels." [/tweetthis] "Autoimmune disease is a malfunction in our immune system and there have been studies done to prove that certain factors disrupt our gut, stress and overall health. Functional medicine is an approach to treating and repairing the body. With functional medicine, we can heal the gut, get the toxins out of the body, and manage and measure stress levels." - Dr. Susan Blum on the power of Functional Medicine to heal our bodies.  "Today, babies aren't developing the healthy microbiome that they need to support their bodies. According to the Hygiene Hypothesis, babies don't need to be so clean because it tones their immune system. They should get an exposure to dirt to help their microbiome be strong. Kids should be playing outside. It's okay for them to eat dirt and parents don't have to make everything so clean." - Dr. Susan Blum on how a healthy microbiome and gut system can develop when we're young.   "You're eating what the animal ate." - Michael Pollan on how what animals we consume, such as fish our poultry, can affect us because of the mercury in the ocean or pesticides in the animal feed. "We don't have medicine for viruses, except for herpes. How can we recover from a virus? Our immune system naturally puts the virus into remission and that virus continues to live hidden inside our bodies. However, sometimes those viruses don't stay quiet and they can come back. That's when we have a problem with the immune system, but these four steps can treat that. By treating the immune system, you can also treat the virus." - Dr. Susan Blum on how viruses can be treated the same way we'd treat an autoimmune disease.  "The number one most important influence on your gut microbiome is food. Vegetables and foods with fiber and vital nutrients feed the good bacteria and help it flourish. Think of your gut like a garden and what you feed it will determine what will grow in it. So you can either grow flowers with good food or weeds with bad food." - Dr. Susan Blum on how food influences our gut microbiome.  "A plant-based diet and cultured foods are still king for encouraging the growth of good bacteria. If you eat cultured foods or take probiotics, you have a better chance at recovering the gut." - Dr. Susan Blum on how a plant-based diet and cultured foods or probiotics can really help our gut thrive.  "We all know that stress has this great control over us, but the fact is that we really have to take it to heart. We really have to believe that it's having an affect on us so that we can take steps to change what's happening. Try to think of it as if we have these 'stress auras' around us, but stress is actually the way our bodies are responding to them and we do have control over that." - Dr Susan Blum on the importance of recognizing how stress is affecting us and that we have the ability to take control.  "Keep practicing your self-care and keep it a priority. Check in with yourself to make sure that you're being true to who you are. We all have a North Star that's within ourselves that's there to guide us and that's also our intuition."  - Dr. Susan Blum on the best piece of advice she received to keep her health strong while working hard at her career. "Wellness is really about balancing our mind, body, and spirit. It's learning about who you are and finding happiness. Wellness is charting a path towards health with a positive outlook. It's about living your life to the fullest." - Dr. Susan Blum on what wellness means to her. 108 Zlata Sushchik: What's Eating You?

Have you ever shame spiraled after a "cheat day" or eating a piece of food that's not on an approved list? Shouldn't creating healthy eating patterns really be all about self-care and self-love? JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST How can we take all of the obstacles we face each day and really use them to help us make empowered decisions for ourselves? On this episode of Wellness Force Radio, lifestyle coach, sports nutritionist, founder of Sexyfit, and author of The Sexyfit Method, Zlata Sushchik, teaches us how we can deeply connect with our bodies, create a fresh start with our health, and gain our own confidence and powerful mindset. In this interview, Zlata uncovers how we can avoid being a "diet robot" that's compelled to always keep up with the rules, regulations, and latest "trends" around food and fitness. As you'll learn, no single diet or exercise plan made for every person, because we get to discover what makes us feel good about ourselves by trusting and honoring the process. Listen to Episode 108 as Zlata Sushchik Uncovers How Zlata's mother and her Russian roots in Moscow have influenced her career in the health and wellness industry. Zlata's story from moving from Russia to the USA (Alaska), getting her start in the fitness industry with bodybuilding, and her relationship with food. Why Zlata created Sexyfit to help her and other women create a healthy relationship with food and love themselves. How our health problems can actually be a blessing that leads us to live healthier lives. Zlata's experience starting out as a wellness coach and helping coach her best friend shed 70 pounds. What it means to be Sexyfit. Zlata's 5 Key Steps in the Sexyfit Method: Train Your Mind Food Freedom Simple Fitness Accountability Power of Community How trend hopping around diets eventually leads us to stop doing them and discover food freedom. How the Sexyfit Method differs from the Whole 30 and other nutrition methods. What was Zlata's Mirror Work moment and how it helped her analyze her relationship with food. What are the emotional triggers that attract us to food? How you can create a new dialogue with your body and stop self-sabotaging it. What both Zlata and Josh have done to help them change their state of mind about their bodies. Zlata's view point on weight lifting vs. simple exercise. Why exercising should be about honoring your body. How we're responsible for our own happiness and self-love. What can sabotage a busy mom's own health and wellness plan. Why selfishness is not a bad thing: We have to take care of ourselves before we can take care of other people. What's eating most people today and what affects us on a day to day basis. Why it's so important, but scary for people to take a closer look at their emotional inventory and come to terms with it. Top 3 Takeaways From The Show You don't have to be a "diet robot" that follows all of these different fitness and nutrition rules and regulations. Healthy is something you create for yourself. Discover and enjoy whatever keeps you motivated to stay on track with your wellness. Don't see your poor health as something to be ashamed of. Instead, see it as a blessing that you're recognizing that you want to take control of your health and wellness. We all have to start somewhere. Each day, you have the opportunity to wake up and honor your body. Do the exercises that you want to do whether it's cardio, HIIT, or LISS. Sometimes, some workouts like CrossFit won't bring us the same joy that other ones can provide for us. Just because your favorite workout isn't hardcore like CrossFit, it doesn't make it any less beneficial for your mind or body. Power Quotes From Zlata Sushchik [tweetthis] "Words shape our present and future. We don't need more restrictions. If there is anything that we do need, it's freedom." [/tweetthis] "We must understand that all of the different parts of the body are connected. If you're constantly fatigued, your body is giving you a sign that you need to pay attention to it. All your body really wants is just attention." - Zlata Sushchik on the power of listening to our bodies.  "It is possible to live in peace. It is possible and available at any time. To achieve it, we need to pay attention to how external chaos influences us internally and how we pick up on energies and mirror those reflections." - Zlata Sushchik on paying attention to ourselves.   "There's no one definition of 'sexy' just like there's no one definition of 'success' because that's something that we truly cultivate for ourselves as women and that's truly where we shine in being different in our own way. Our bodies are different, our lifestyles are different, and we must honor that in order to feel at home in our body and with who we are rather they buy into the ideas of what we're supposed to look like." - Zlata Sushchik on what 'sexy' means. "Sexyfit is about understanding who you are, how you feel, and doing things your own way." -Zlata Sushchik on what Sexyfit is all about.  "Words shape our present moment and shape our future. We don't need more restrictions in our diet. If there is anything that we do need, it's freedom. Freedom doesn't come from restriction. Freedom comes from empowerment and making choices based on what's true for us." - Zlata Sushchik on how we should be empowered to make the choices we want to make about food and not restrict ourselves.  "There's this idea that every workout has to be intense and insane, but half of my workouts are a mix between walking and meditation. I believe that simple fitness is really the best way to connect with our bodies and to connect with our movement. Fitness is not therapy. Use fitness as a way to honor your body and movement. Don't torture yourself with crazy workouts that don't feel good to you." - Zlata Sushchik on why we don't need to do intense workouts like CrossFit.  "The true wealth is our health. It's really important for us to honor the relationship we have with ourselves when it comes to trust, communication, respect, kindness, and compassion. Just like everything else in life, it takes work. It's not something that's just given to us and it's not something that's so simple unless we have the right tools." - Zlata Sushchik on the importance of honoring our minds and bodies.  About Zlata Sushchik Zlata Sushchik is a lifestyle coach, sports nutritionist and founder of an online fitness coaching company called Sexyfit. 107 Dr. Sylvia Tara: The Secret Life of Fat

How can understanding the secret biological and emotional connections hidden deep inside our fat help us let go of old weight, discover individual wellness, and rekindle a trusted relationship with our body? On this episode of Wellness Force Radio, biochemist and author of The Secret Life of Fat, Dr. Sylvia Tara teaches us why fat is such a complex endocrine organ that can control our minds and how we can use that knowledge to our advantage for weight loss and more energy. JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST Our Individual Connection With Fat There is no one-size fits-all weight loss plan because our age, gender, genetics, as well as bacteria and viruses all play a role.  Forget everything that you thought you knew about fat and discover how you can create an individual approach to losing weight and loving the skin you're in. Listen To Episode 107 As Dr. Tara Uncovers  Why Dr. Tara wrote, The Secret Life of Fat, as an educational tool for us to use. What is fat? Why is it so easy for some people to lose weight and difficult for others? Why do we shame ourselves for our weight? When did we start judging our bodies? What changed society from bracing fat to fearing it? Dr. Tara and Josh share their fat loss stories and what has helped guide them to embracing their bodies. Why fat is so amazing and how it connects with our bodies, emotions, metabolism, and behavior. The analogy of money and fat in the body: glucose is cash, glycogen is a checking account, and fat is a certificate of deposit. What is leptin and how does fat regulate it? How does it affect our food cravings? What are the daily habits we can make to ensure that we continue to keep the weight off? Why we should keep in mind different hormones to keep off weight: insulin, ghrelin, and leptin. How intermittent fasting has helped Dr. Tara keep off her unwanted fat. As we age, other fat burning hormones such as estrogen and testosterone begin to decline. What do sumo wrestlers eat and what happens to their metabolism when they retire? The difference between visceral fat and subcutaneous fat. What can allow us to release adiponectin so we have fat stored as subcutaneous versus mesentery or visceral fat: cardio, HIIT, working out at night vs. the morning. How genetics, age, gender, viruses and bacteria all have different roles that play into how much fat we store. Why women are predisposed to pack on more fat than men because of their biology and hormone levels. Dr. Tara's tips to staying on your nutrition and exercise plan. Why we feel like a failure if we skip a day in our plan because of dichotomous thinking. Don't fall into a shame spiral. Take a break from your diet if you need and get recharged to get back on it again. Why sleep is so good to help our hormone levels and elevate our stress levels. The most fascinating fact that Dr. Tara learned during her research: that fat can control our mind. It controls our appetite and how affects how we think about food. What leptin replacement therapy is and how it could be used to help people control their weight.  Top 3 Takeaways From The Show If you're a woman, don't let the thin female models on the covers of magazines send you into a shame spiral. Women are naturally predisposed to pack on more fat than men because they are meant to store their fat for energy. Also, when women workout, they release more of the gherkin hormone which is why they're hungrier than men afterwards. It's not a bad thing that women store more fat and have hunger cravings after hitting the gym, it's completely natural. How much fat each person stores is completely unique to them because there are so many factors to consider (age, genetics, bacteria, gender). To approach weight loss, we need to create an individualized plan for ourselves. Know which foods help or hurt your weight loss goal and which type of workout benefits your body that most. Don't limit yourself to eating you favorite foods; just try to stick to your plan. Create a plan that works for your body, mind, and schedule. Don't be upset with yourself if you fall off your nutrition and exercise path one day. We're only human and taking a break is okay. We need time to recharge our batteries and get motivated to eat healthy and workout again. Power Quotes From Dr. Sylvia Tara [tweetthis] "We don't all lose weight the same way. You have to find a diet that just works just for you. " - @SylviaTaraPhD [/tweetthis] "The Secret Life of Fat is about having a better idea of what fat actually is and to stop believing in all of these myths about fat loss." - Dr. Sylvia Tara "Once I learned about fat and what it does with our bodies, it was actually really empowering. Fat has so many tricks to stay on our bodies and it can do amazing things. It's an endocrine organ so it can release hormones into our blood stream that can affect our behaviour, our appetite, and our metabolism." - Dr. Sylvia Tara on the power of fat. "We don't all lose weight the same way and that's why it's so important to tailor a diet that works for yourself." - Dr. Sylvia Tara "When you've lost weight and you're feeling less satiated and more hungry, just remember that your body and its leptin levels are driving you to get that fat back on your body. It takes a lot of drive and determination to not give into cravings. This feeling can even last for years and it's important to have that inner drive to keep off the weight." - Dr. Sylvia Tara "People think that sloth and gluttony are the only reasons why people gain on weight. However, genetics, age, gender, as well as viruses and bacteria all have a role in how much fat we actually store." - Dr. Sylvia Tara on how we actually store fat vs. how we used to think we store fat. "If we feel uncertainty in our daily lives, whether over a medical test, job offer, or family situation, the lingering doubt depletes our willpower. Starting a weight management plan during such a time of uncertainty makes it more difficult to persevere. If it is possible to ease the stress in your life before starting a serious attempt to change your lifestyle do so. Successful weight management requires the ability to take challenges in stride and maintain your diet and exercise plan." - Dr. Sylvia Tara on how to set up the mind so we can focus on losing weight.  "Once you get on a shame spiral, it's hard to get off of it. Not only will dichotomous thinking affect your diet plan, but other factors of your life as well. People with dichotomous thinking tend to have more depression, more eating disorders, and a lot more unhappiness in their lives." - Dr. Syliva Tara on how dichotomous thinking can negatively affect our minds and bodies.  "Dieting is hard. It's a long-term commitment and you have to fight a lot of urges to stay on it. However the rewards are good. It might be hard to go through and stay on a diet for awhile, but you also get a lot of rewards. You gain a control of your life, can buy clothes at the size you want to be, and so many other benefits. Choose to follow a diet when the timing is right for you and the commitment will be worth it. " - Dr. Sylvia Tara on her own difficulties with staying on a diet.  "Anger is a very strong emotion. What helped fuel me through this wellness transformation was my anger and vengeance towards my fat. Use your negative emotions and direct them in a way that you will win in the end." - Dr. Sylvia Tara on how we can use our anger and other negative emotions to fuel our motivation to lose weight.  About Dr. Sylvia Tara Sylvia Tara holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry from The University of California, San Diego and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. She was a healthcare management consultant with McKinsey & Company, and has worked for the world’s largest biotechnology companies. After an extended battle with fat, Dr. Tara became fascinated with its resiliency and embarked on a mission to better understand it. This book is the culmination of years of research and interviews with physicians, patients and leading scientists. 106 Dr. Anna Akbari: Finding Happiness & Wellness In A Digital World

The digital world is growing faster than ever, but how it is really helping us to create better wellness, loving relationships, and true happiness in our modern world? On this episode of Wellness Force Radio, sociologist, entrepreneur, innovation consultant, and the author of Startup Your Life: Hustle and Hack Your Way to Happiness, Dr. Anna Akbari shares how we can and find both happiness and wellness in a digital world. Listen and learn how to bring more wellness into your life as we dive deep into a discussion about career and life choices, relationships, and money in today's modern life.  JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST Think Like A Startup To change her life, Dr. Akbari had to start analyzing each of her decisions like a startup company would approach them. Even though Dr. Anna Akbari had a wonderful career in New York City and academia at New York University and Parsons New School for Design, she eventually realized that it was not enough to sustain her happiness and wellness forever. Following just one career path was not all that Dr. Akbari wanted to succeed at during her lifetime. She knew deep down inside that there had to be something more. One day, she woke up and finally decided it was time to pivot her life. Craving nature, new work projects, expanding her career and life possibilities, Dr. Akbari made the plan to move to California. Academia was her comfort zone but she knew she could be happier if she added more practical passions to the mix. Pausing our lives, pivoting, and making a major change isn't the easiest choice, but it could be what changes the direction of our journey forever.  Happiness Architecture How we can design our lives so that we can create the life that we want. Mental models hold us hostage in thinking that there's only one singular path that we have to follow to be happy and successful. Like a startup trying new tactics and finding better solutions, we can invert the truth about how a life should be lived and begin anew. We can afford to take chances, unlearn something, and innovate. We don't need to make a geographical change like Dr. Akbari did by moving from New York City to California, but we can find new ways to reinvent ourselves and be more open take chances. When we get outside of our comfort zone, we can make it easier for ourselves to pivot our lives in order to increase our wellness and happiness.  The 3 Part Formula for Happiness & Success If we get to a point in life where we know we can no longer stay with the same unrewarding job, a lot of us need to pivot our careers or find a new place to live like Dr. Akbari did to rediscover her wellness and happiness. While moving to a completely different location or leaving our work field for another career may not be entirely feasible, there is a formula we can use to evaluate and choose our next move. During our interview, Dr. Akbari shares her 3 Part Formula for Happiness and Success and how we can apply it to our lives. Simply ask yourself the following questions: Passion: What is something that you are passionate about? Practicality: What are you skilled at or could be good at? Audience: What does your audience demand? If all of these three areas successfully intersect, then you've created your own secret sauce for happiness and success.   Listen to Episode 106 as Dr. Akbari Uncovers Why Dr. Akbari decided to title her book, "Startup Your Life" and how it relates to her personal life. What her experience was like during the 2008 recession as a working professional. How "pivoting" can help us improve our careers, relationships, wellness, and more. The biggest pivot that Dr. Akbari has made in her life when she decided to leave New York City. Happiness Architecture: Digital Happiness in our modern world. How Dr. Akbari is able to handle decision fatigue throughout the day. What digital happiness can look like in 2017. How we can design our lives so that we can create the life that we want to create. What Dr. Akbari did to invert all of her assumptions about what would happen if she left NYC and took a chance to move to California. How do we know if we should drastically change our environments or stay where we are? What can we do to get rid of some of the facts that we used to believe about ourselves? How can we get rid of old software to start anew? Why Dr. Akbari decided to include the following quote in her book from Paramahana Yoganana: "Since you alone are responsible for your thoughts, only you can change them.” The 3 Part Formula for Happiness according to Dr. Akbari. How we can strategically spend money to help our feelings of well-being and security. Can love and relationships really thrive in this digital age? How does each gender play a part? How do men and women feel empowered in the world of technology? How do we socialize without technology? Why ghosting is one of the most selfish things a person can do in both their personal and professional lives.  Top 3 Takeaways From The Show Pivoting can help us improve anything we want to actively change in our lives. Our careers, relationships, or wellness can all benefit from pivoting. We can become better "pivoters" when we don't invest in the idea of what our singular outcome will be. If we keep an open mind and if we're experimenting with how we'll get to where we want to be, then the constant feedback will help us readjust our input. It's always good to remember to not be too over-attached to something that wasn't even feasible in the first place. Relationships, both personal and professional, have changed because of all of the new digital technology. We're so used to online dating that for someone to actually come up to us and ask us out in person can seem strange and even intimidating. The digital age has really affected the roles that both men and women play in relationships. Now there are all of these new terms like catfishing and ghosting that are really affecting our relationships with each other. We've gotten so used to moving from one relationship to the next through dating apps, they we don't take the time to really dig deep into one relationship. Conventional pieces of wisdom such as "money cannot buy happiness" is affecting the way we see money today. What a lot of people don't realize is that without money, we don't have the ability to create, thrive, nor relax. How we spend our money can affect our wellness and happiness. If we spend our money more strategically by investing in experiences, it can help build long-term happiness compared to buying objects. If we're worried that a life decision will set us back financially, we have to be honest with ourselves. Will it just slightly lower some of the luxuries that aren't bringing us happiness or will it threaten our well-being and security? Power Quotes From Dr. Anna Akbari [tweetthis]"If you follow your heart and you keep the 3 Part Formula in mind, then you will be happy." - @annaakbari[/tweetthis] "Since you alone are responsible for your thoughts, only you can change them.” - Paramahana Yoganana "The actions I did weren't necessarily glamorous decisions, but they were actions that many people think are out of reach for them. The difference is that I was trying to figure out life hacks and how to do things that might immediately seem inaccessible. That is what startups do all the time. That's what they have to do all the time to be relevant and to beat out the major competition. The more I applied that thinking to my life, the more of an edge I got and the happier I was." - Dr. Anna Akbari on how she was able to startup her life. "It's easier to be happy in the sludge. Much of our life is spent in the sludge. It's not all spent in those top-of-your-game milestones. We think that achieving those milestones will make us happy, but it's really all of those in-between moments that we have to sort out along the way that bring us joy." - Dr. Anna Akbari on how working towards achievements is what brings us purpose and makes us happy.  "As devastating as it was, I think the 2008 recession was actually really liberating for a lot of people. A lot of my friends and peers had been relatively unhappy in their life and career paths. Then everything that they had always taken for granted was pulled out from underneath them. So they thought to themselves, "Well, I should just go do what I want to do if this career that I don't want to do isn't secure anymore." - Dr. Anna Akbari on the effect of the 2008 USA recession and how people realized that they could change their careers to something that they love to do.  "Stop investing in so much of what the initial idea of what your singular outcome can be. If you're always thinking about what you're working toward and if it's only towards one thing, then you're not going to be open to a pivot. Any kind of shift in your focus or in the outcome is going to feel like a failure and an unacceptable outcome." - Dr. Anna Akbari on what can hold us back from pivoting and therefore making a successful change in our lives. "We've been taught over and over again that we should focus on one thing and really excel at it so that we can climb the ranks. But that's not the correct path for a lot of us; especially if we have different interests or just want to diversify our income. Following a singular path is not the only or right path for most people." - Dr. Anna Akbari on why pivoting and changing our paths can be the right thing for a lot of us.  "When I started following my heart and not doing just what was immediately professionally practical, all of these new professional opportunities for success started flowing in." - Dr. Anna Akbari on how her biggest pivot to move from New York City to California helped her find happiness in her career.  "We're at this interesting point in time when technology is such a crucial element of our lives and it affords us so many wonderful conveniences and yet, as we all know, it simultaneously diminishes and deteriorates the quality of our lives." - Dr. Anna Akbari on digital happiness. "Why does this magnificent applied science which saves work and also makes live easier bring us so little happiness?" - Albert Einstein on how technology can bring us very little happiness.  "Wherever you go, there you are." - Josh Trent "The more that we can keep our minds ripe and ready for change, the better we will be. Constantly pushing yourself out of your comfort zone or introducing new variables into your life will keep you fresh." - Dr Anna Akbari on how we can be open to change and be rid of old software or false beliefs.  "Your opportunity for both success and happiness is at this intersection of what you're passionate about, what you're actually skilled at or could become skilled at, and what people are demanding. If you can find an intersection of those three things and use that to interrogate which passions are viable and which aren't, you're going to have a much smoother and happier path." - Dr. Anna Akbari on her advice to clients on how to interrogate their passions for happiness and success. "When it comes to money and happiness, it's less about specific numbers and more about the choices that surround those numbers. Studies find that the amount of money you make matters less than how you spend it. While money alone can't buy happiness, strategic spending can significantly enhance your well-being." - Dr. Anna Akbari in chapter 8 (Hustle and Grow) of her book, Startup Your Life.  "Finding happiness is not so much in trading to a new novelty, but rather digging deeper. Really taking the time to put in the work is the key component with relationships."  - Dr. Anna Akbari "To follow my heart and not just always be thinking about being practical. If you follow your heart and you keep the 3 Part Formula (passion, audience, and practicality) in mind, then you will be happy." - Dr. Anna Akbari's advice on being happy.  "Everyone has their tipping point when they know that something is a breaking point for them. We all have to decide what that is for us and submit to it when that time comes. Embrace it and reflect on it so that we can grow. We don't grow the most when we're actually thriving. We grow the most when we've had some kind of failure and are forced to reflect and make something of it." - Dr. Anna Akbari on what we can learning from trying something new.  "We might not like everything that we see happening in the world and we can't always change all of that, but we can decide how we're going to design our lives and how we want to touch the communities that we encounter on an every day basis. " - Dr. Anna Akbari on what kind of legacy she wants to leave.  "Wellness is about creating balance. Whether it's sleep, diet, exercise, or meditation while also never forgetting the value of spontaneity." - Dr. Anna Akbari on what wellness means to her.  About Dr. Anna Akbari Dr. Anna Akbari is a sociologist, entrepreneur, innovation consultant, and writer.  She is a former professor in the department of Media, Culture, and Communication and the department of Art and Art Professions at New York University, as well as the Art and Design History and Theory department at Parsons The New School for Design. The brain is the ultimate governor of the body. Without it, we wouldn't have strong muscles, healthy emotional wellness, good gut health, and the ability to perform to our highest potential each day. We've always known that the brain is a powerful organ, but without it, we wouldn't have such an amazing connection with the rest of our body.  Today on Wellness Force Radio, Sport Scientist and Clinical Sport Psychologist at Clinical & Sports Consulting Services and co-author of the latest book, The Brain Always Wins, Dr. John P. Sullivan, teaches us how our brain has the powerful ability to help us deeply connect with our emotions, make good decisions, and build relationships within our tribe.   JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST   Hydration. Nutrition. Sleep. As long as we provide these three essential daily activities to our lives, our brain will always win. Power Your Life We work so hard to be perfect, but the brain doesn't want us to be perfect. Perfection causes anxiety and trauma. What we really need is consistency. The brain craves consistency that is in line with our daily hydration, nutrition, and sleep. Without all three elements, we wouldn't be able to move and perform as well. Today, Dr. Sullivan will help us answer the ultimate questions, "How do we show up powerfully in our lives? How can we train for both brain performance and brain health?" How can both a top performing athlete and a busy parent manage and enhance their mental health by focusing on good hydration, nutrition, and sleep? What do our brain waves, meditation, and emotions all have in common? How does both our brain and gut function to help us thrive and perform each day? Tune in to find out. Listen to Episode 105 as Dr. Sullivan Uncovers What fascinates Dr. Sullivan about the brain and how his career began. Why Dr. Sullivan placed the following quote by Francis Crick on his website and what it means to him: "There is no scientific study more vital to man than the study of his own brain. Our entire view of the universe depends on it.” Dr. Sullivan explains what he means by calling the brain a "governor" throughout his book, The Brain Always Wins. Why does the brain always win? Why is the brain the leader of our bodies? How come our brains are so much larger than great apes? What is the benefit of this? What is the contrast between athletes and high performers vs busy parents? How can the MUSE headband help? The benefits of meditation to combat not stress, but the trauma we experience in our lives. A look at the 5 major sections of brain waves: Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta, and Gamma. The proper way to nap for brain health plus the difference between napping and sleeping. What's the best amount of time to take a nap? Do you need 10 minutes or longer to get the full benefits from napping? How our brains are able to detoxify while we sleep. When we're stressed, does the brain produce more toxins that need to be washed during a sleep cycle? The importance of water and staying hydrated to keep our nervous system healthy. If we don't have sleep, hydration, or food, we simply cannot move and that's why the first three or so necessary to create a healthy brain. Training for brain performance and training for brain health: How do we do both? What's the correlation between professional athletes who train hard and people in every day life? How can we train or vagus nerve to have a better connection between the gut and the brain? How does the vagus nerve benefit us? Sport Psychology practices that athletes put to use that we can also use: the power of music for our brains, heart, vagus, and more. How can Ketosis help us have a healthy brain? The best way to keep your mind in a consistent state of flow and combat fatigue while traveling between time zones. Top 3 Takeaways From The Show Our quality of health including muscle, nutrition, and heart function are all in service to our brain. Our brain has a solid part and a place in everything concerning our health and wellness. We can improve our health and keep it in top condition with three factors: hydration, nutrition, and sleep. The brains is the governor of the body and is wired to help us survive. Thanks to our evolution, with our brains we have the ability to hone in on our background environment and  predict at least a minute ahead of time of what will happen next. It's because of our ability to first feel and then think that allows the brain to always win. Unlike great apes, we're able to make emotional connections that allow us to make good decisions. It's because of our emotions that we're able to evaluate friendships and stay connected within our tribe. We're not made to be isolated from other people and our emotions help us to stay balanced. Power Quotes From Dr. John Sullivan [tweetthis]"Our brain is wired to survive, but we can to certain things day to day to make it more resilient." - @BrainAlwaysWins[/tweetthis] "There is no scientific study more vital to man than the study of his own brain. Our entire view of the universe depends on it.” - Francis Crick  "Heart health, maintaining lean muscle mass, nutrition and a multitude of other factors all serve the brain. They are not in service for isolation; they are in service to our brain. If we don't think about our brain as the vehicle for our personal performance, our quality of life, our ability to give  to others and to give to ourselves, then we're really missing a critical point." - Dr. John Sullivan on his take on the above Francis Crick quote.  "Excellence is grounded in the billions of neurons between our ears. Arguing this point also comes from the same neurons between our ears." - Dr. John Sullivan "Human variation starts with the brain and I try to assist people to have a better quality of life or better performance in certain situations. The brain's function is not "cookie cutter"  because it's not the same pattern for everyone. But because we're uniquely wired to survive, everyone has these strengths that they can bring to the table." - Dr. John Sullivan on his fascination with the brain.  "Central to our life is our brain health. Without our brain health, we don't have health and then we don't have performance." - Dr. John Sullivan on why the brain is the governor of the body. "The brain always wins because it's a predictive organ. It's always giving us consistent information about our health. It is incredibly efficient in helping us get information, understanding what that information means, and using that information to benefit our health. The brain always wins because it is designed to survive." - Dr. John Sullivan on why the brain always wins.  "There is no such thing as mental toughness or grit. These are re-packaged terms with very poor science. Everyone's ability to perform on any given day is based upon their health." - Dr. John Sullivan on what it means to have a strong mind.  "Life is not about stress. If you look at neuroanatomy, life is about trauma and it's either a little "t" or a large "T." Trauma requires rest and recovery which meditation provides." - Dr. John Sullivan on how meditation can help us with trauma. "We can all expect stress or some type of challenge, but we have to plan for the recovery so that it all balances out. Only then can we become resilient, evolve, grow, and adapt." - Dr. John Sullivan on the power of rest and recovery when we're stressed out. "Our culture is all about work, work, work and we've lost the idea that rest is where it all comes together." - Dr. John Sullivan on the benefits of rest. "Our brain is wired to survive, but we can to certain things day to day to make it more resilient." - Dr. John Sullivan on how to make our minds stronger.  "You don't have to be perfect. In fact the brain hates perfection because it induces anxiety and it creates more neurological stress. We only really need consistency to have a happy brain. Looking at our ancestors and evolution, if we needed perfection, we wouldn't have been able to survive as a species." - Dr. John Sullivan on why we're not wired to be perfect. "What we've learned is that we think first and then we feel, but it's actually the other way around. We feel first and then we think. It doesn't work any other way than that because the limbic system was designed for survival." - Dr. John Sullivan on the purpose of our emotions.  "Any important decision we've ever made in our lives has been made on emotion. The more important the decision, the more emotion is involved. This why emotion regulation is so key to decision making." - Dr. John Sullivan on why are emotions are so important to help us make decisions.  "Wellness is having an individualized, thoughtful, and flexible approach to being able to be healthy and meet life's demands." - Dr. John Sullivan on what wellness means to him. 104 Amanda Steinberg: Money, Women, & Wellness

Worthless. That’s how Amanda Steinberg felt in her late 20s. She had bottomed out financially, emotionally—everything. She’d worked herself to the bone to showcase herself as a 21st Century working mom, and like practically every college-educated woman she knew, she'd followed what seemed like straightforward steps to building the perfect post-feminist life. It was at this gut-check moment, in debt and emotionally spent, when she realized that she was "worth it," and so are you.    Join The Wellness Force Community on Facebook    As a female, have you ever felt like you could not achieve the same financial success as others because of your gender or present situation? Have you struggled to let go of old weight and society’s expectations of what you should do with your life? For women who believe they need money to be enough, are afraid they’ll never achieve financial success, or feel stuck in their present situation, this episode is for you. We are all worthy of financial success and feeling empowered about ourselves. Despite gender inequality in the workforce and how society views and values money, women have the ability to take the idea of financial success and make it something of their own. We don't have to allow society's structure and regulations to prevent us from creating a successful relationship with money because we're worth more than that. Rewiring our Perception of Self-Worth Around Money What are the stories we tell ourselves in relation to money around society? For decades, situations and circumstances have shaped the household roles of both males and females. Males have been the providers and women the nurturers. This idea has been branded in our minds. Society tells us that males cannot be the nurturers nor females the providers. Fortunately, this idea is slowly changing as females are discovering their self-worth and net worth. Today on Wellness Force Radio, Founder & CEO of DailyWorth, founder of WorthFM, and author of Worth It: Your Life, Your Money, Your Terms, Amanda Steinberg shares how she’s helping women find their inner strength to let go of old weight and gain financial freedom. Roots & Wings: Create Your Own Rules About Money At a young age, Amanda observed the burden that money had on her mother. She saw first-hand the pressure that her mother experienced to make sure that she had enough money to pay the bills and provide a comfortable life for her family. At one point or another, we can all relate to that same pressure that Amanda’s mother faced. We’ve all experienced the pressure to “be enough” and have a baseline of “normalcy” according to our financial self-worth. We’re pressured to have enough money to provide for the perfect family, have the best possessions, or to fit our role according to our gender. Unfortunately, because of this pressure around normalcy and money, some women might feel held back from achieving their own financial success. We’re afraid that we’re not worthy because of how we show up to society. On this episode, you will learn that despite what society has told us, financial freedom is attainable for anyone. Money shouldn’t be a burden according to our background, gender, or knowledge. One day Amanda learned an important lesson from her mother that has helped her to let go of old weight and rewire how she perceives money. To be financially secure, we just need two things: Roots and Wings: Roots are your assets such as real estate, investment, and owning a business. Wings are your cash flow including credit and income. Join us in listening to Amanda as she shares how we can rewire our perceptions about money and gain financial freedom. Listen to Episode 104 as Amanda Uncovers How is financial security defined? What does it mean for different people? What we perceive as clarity and control around money versus the reality of our own circumstances. How money can create stress and harm our personal wellness. Amanda's childhood and the paralyzing pain that she and her family experienced because of money. Amanda's experience with debt and the steps she took to reevaluate her personal finances. How a hip-hop poetry artist and a spiritually elevated human rights advocate named Rha Goddess helped Amanda re-program her thoughts on money. The shift in society regarding the role that both men and women have with money. Why Amanda was living a life that she thought she was supposed to live out of fear of not fitting in. Why Amanda forced herself to live a life that didn’t suit her at all. How Amanda created a new story about money to fit her life and needs. How women can write their own rules to live their own lives with roots and wings. The new financial narrative for women in 2017: How does money impact their wellness? Josh's experience with money and how it represented pain for him when he was younger. How we learn about money habits from our parents and other sources. Amanda's strategy to rewire thoughts about who she is and her relationship with money. To rewire her thoughts to not see herself as a spender anymore, but a saver. The challenges women face to become leaders in the corporation world. How the social norms are changing as far as women being nurturers and men being the providers. Amanda's goal to help people to become more comfortable with who they are and what roles they want to take on. How a couple can begin to balance their money and keep their family in a constant state of financial wellness. The importance of figuring out what is important to you i.e. travel, a home, technology so that you focus on spending your money on that and not on something that is not as important to you. How to discover Positive Net Worth: Ask yourself what you're invested in, what do all of these financial terms mean for you? Where is your money and how is it being directed? Amanda's favorite money tools to help you re-evaluate your personal finances. Amanda's plans for 2017 and her new book, Worth It. Top 3 Takeaways From The Show We do not have to learn money habits from only our parents. There are other sources out there that can act as good examples to help us achieve financial stability and freedom. Society doesn’t define our relationship with money. We do. Despite our previous income status, experiences, our gender, we can let go of old weight and begin a new relationship with money. We can start fresh and gain control of our personal finances with clarity. Our society has wired our brains for years to believe that only men can be the main providers and women the sole nurturers. But times are changing as both genders can either be the provider or the nurturer. Power Quotes From Amanda Steinberg   "Our feelings and relationship around money have very little to do with the actual circumstances of our finances." - @AmandaSteinberg   "My life and work are dedicated to the reinvention of financial advice and financial services so that anyone, regardless of circumstance, gender or knowledge level, can experience the thrill of money clarity and control." - Amanda Steinberg "Our feelings and relationship around money have very little to do with the actual circumstances of our finances." - Amanda Steinberg on achieving clarity and control with money. "As women, we can't really fulfill our potential until we understand our money. I'm trying to support this shift for women in the workforce so that it doesn't feel like work and they don't feel bad about it." - Amanda Steinberg on the current shift for women in relation to money and work. "Worthless. That’s how I felt in my late 20s. I had bottomed out financially, emotionally—everything. I’d worked myself to the bone to showcase myself as a 21st Century working mom, and like practically every college-educated woman I knew, I had followed what seemed like straightforward steps to building the perfect post-feminist life." - Amanda Steinberg on her own struggle with money. "If women are disassociated from finance as our culture has required it, women are never going to be able to take care of themselves and it's going to perpetuate this impossible situation." - Amanda Steinberg on the motivation to help women become financially independent and manage their money better.  "Debt led to doubt; doubt spiraled into despair." - Amanda Steinberg in her new book, Worth It. "All you need are roots and wings." - The piece of financial advice that Amanda Steinberg's mom gave her. "This baseline of normalcy has set it up so that people are so afraid to be judged by others. We don't realize that anyone's judgement of ourselves is actually more about them than anything to do with us. Where do these expectations even come from? Give yourself the freedom of space." - Amanda Steinberg on the social pressures that we face every day and how to ignore them. "We shape our identities to protect ourselves from pain. So, when we start to dismantle some things that we realize don't have to be entirely true, it can be really painful. It's confronting and really uncomfortable. But it can bring clarity to recognize which statements cause us pain and those are the ones that we need to get rid of in our lives." - Amanda Steinberg on how we can rewire our thoughts around money and ourselves. "All of your Truth exists because you arbitrarily chose it for no reason long ago and then collected evidence. That's it. Except for: be nice to people, be honest, love wins. Otherwise, all bullshit.” - Carl Richards "Humans are really starting to realize that we are the creators of our world, we are not victims of it." - Amanda Steinberg on how we are gaining more confidence to do what we want with our lives. "Women have been programmed to be self-less, dependent, and bad with money. I am overtly and expressly helping women to reprogram themselves so that they are self-full, independent, and can live life by their own definition." - Amanda Steinberg on how she's helping women redefine themselves. "What's important for women is to realize that we have been impressed upon us by society that we are valued when we are selfless and giving. That makes it very hard for women to even think about money because it feels like a selfish thing. For the man, he has been told that he will be successful when he has monetary success and he is a provider. So, for the man to release some of that over to his wife and to not feel like he's being emasculated, it's equally as challenging."  - Amanda Steinberg on the struggle society faces to see the female and male roles with money in a different light. "Revenue solves all problems." - Amanda Steinberg's own mantra when she faces something difficult. With Wired To Eat you’ll embark on a program to rewire your appetite and regain your health. Listen to Episode 103 as Robb Uncovers Robb's response to when people say they do not believe in Paleo and ancestral health: the evidence is there that it works and it's helping people. How Paleo health got its start with just a couple of thousands of people studying and researching it. The emotion and story behind Robb writing his upcoming book, Wired to Eat. How the human race has evolved in such a way that it's difficult to eat healthy with our current environment: food to order, a variety of flavors, processed foods etc. Why we have a mindset that we can't be healthy even as we're watching other people do just that. It's hard to make changes in our lives because we're afraid to fail or look bad. How Robb struggled with his own health and inherited genetics. Despite his success as an author and podcast host, Robb has always been able to stay level-headed and stay true to himself. What Robb has learned from watching other people in the industry and how he used that point of view as an opportunity to decide how he would present himself to the public. How Robb's mom's health scare with her gastrointestinal health led to Robb taking a closer look at his own health and adjust his nutrition to follow the Paleo diet. Robb's experience adapting to a Paleo based diet and the success he has had with it. How Robb met his wife, Nicki, when he moved to Chico, California and the unknown link their mothers shared by having the same rheumatologists. The impact of the death of Nicki's mother from rheumatoid arthritis and how Robb wishes he could've helped her based on what was able to help his mother. How Robb's 30 Day Reset plan can help people take a closer look at their nutrition and improve their lives. Robb and Josh dive deep into a conversation about the neuroregulation of appetite and personalized nutrition tools. How our modern world has taken away the positive impact of our natural optimum foraging strategy and why we have palate fatigue. What we can do to avoid distractions and really focus on what our appetites are telling us: when we're truly hungry and when we're full. The dessert effect: When we decide to go ahead to eat dessert even though we've just polished off a huge meal. The normal fed state: what it is and how it varies from person to person depending on several factors such as stress, sleep, genetics etc. The idea of calories in and calories out simply doesn't work. We need to balance our activity and nutrition out. If we're very active, we need  more nutrients, but if we have a low calorie day, we're naturally less active. If we get into an over-fed state, we're overweight, but our brain cannot sense it because it's become numb to the feeling of over-eating food. How Robb came up with the 30 Day Reset Program in Wired to Eat and why it's only 30 days: It's not a long time, but enough time to collect necessary information to help the person see results as far ar their: Protein Fiber The mission behind the 7 Day Carb Test: it helps people to see the impact that different carbohydrates have on their bodies and minds. Robb's experience with the Ketogenic Diet and what advice he would give to people who follow it or a low-carb diet. The blood-glucose monitors that Robb offers on his website and what it can tell you about yourself in accordance with different parameters such as food and sleep.  Precision Xtra Glucose+Ketone meter Dexcom Continuous Glucose monitor Are finger pricks really necessary to tell us about our blood-glucose levels? Robb shares how technology is making it easier for us to learn about our bodies and what we can do to modify our daily habits for better health.  How becoming a parent has helped Robb become more patient with both himself and others. What it was like for Robb to write his second book, Wired to Eat and some of the hurdles he had to jump to make sure his voice was heard in the book. Top 3 Takeaways From The Show What have we got to lose from trying a diet like the Paleo diet? If we're doing all that we can to help our health, but nothing is helping, simply changing your focus on nutrition could be the solution. Change can be difficult but with Robb's 30 Day Reset Program and 7 Day Carb Test, we'll be able to see that making small changes to our diet really isn't that difficult after all. Our modern world has stolen the positive impact of  the natural optimum foraging strategy that was passed down to us by our ancestors. This is why we experience palate fatigue after we eat the same processed foods over and over again. The Paleo diet brings us back to that optimum foraging strategy so we can avoid palate fatigue. What our bodies and minds need is a variety of healthy, nutritious foods that can help us function better. Our bodies have a gut, health, and brain connection and The 4 Pillars of Health have a great influence over this connection. The 4 Pillars of Health are Sleep, Movement, Community, and Nutrition. Our genetic and environmental factors can either make it easier for us to overeat or if we're able to balance the 4 Pillars, we can manage our nutrition. Power Quotes From Robb Wolf "Eat whole foods, get outside, move a lot, sleep like you are on vacation, and surround yourself with loving relationships." - @robbwolf "If we understand how our world has changed, our genetics are wired for a different world, we can free ourselves of the shame and missed placed morality associated with you and hearing difficulties of change. We can finally stop bleeding ourselves for our inability to lose weight and get healthy." - Robb Wolf in Wired to Eat "We are genetically wired to eat more and move less; it’s no wonder most people fail to achieve health and weight-loss goals." - Robb Wolf in Wired to Eat "The fact that the Paleo diet can be difficult for some people to follow indicates that there is a mismatch between our genetics and our current environment. Everything that made our ancestors successful and everything that brought us to where we are today is the reason why changing our diets can be difficult." - Robb Wolf on why it's difficult for people to follow healthy diets like the Paleo diet. "We often tell ourselves stories about why we are a certain way. We tell ourselves why we can or cannot change. And the common denominator with most of the stories is fear. Fear of change, failure, or wasting time. This fear sends the logical mind searching for credible reasons why embarking on a new solution seems like a bad idea." - Robb Wolf in his upcoming book, Wired to Eat about why we let fear get in the way of our goals.  "It's not about me, it's about the mission." - Lauren Noel on the importance of staying true to yourself while becoming more recognizable in the health and wellness industry.  "I basically adopted a low-carb, Paleo diet and it was almost as if a switch had been flipped. For the first time in my life, I didn't have to eat every hour and a half to two hours or face a catastrophic hypoglycemic event. I was completely functional. I felt good, I was leaner than I had ever been in my life, and it was all effortless." - Robb Wolf on deciding to follow a Paleo diet to improve his health.  "Eat whole, unprocessed foods, get outside in the sun, move a lot, sleep like you are on vacation, and surround yourself with loving relationships." - Robb Wolf  in Wired to Eat on how to stay healthy.   "With a Paleo template, you can still add spaghetti if you want to add it. You can have spaghetti squash and it might be a bit odd for some people at first, but when you add the marinara sauce, it still tastes delicious. It's the same as normal spaghetti because you don't even taste the noodles. What you taste is the marinara sauce on top." - Robb Wolf on how you can eat Paleo foods and still enjoy the meal.  "Be able to do whatever I want to do with very little preparation or effort within the 4 pillars of health: sleep, nutrition, movement, and community. We need to have a balance of all 4 and if we're successful, we'll be able to do a large amount of what we want to do with our lives." - Rob Wolf on what wellness means to him. "People are not swayed into action by information. Most people make changes in behavior due to emotion, not facts and figures. This is not a bad thing; our emotions, coupled with our logical intellect, is what make us human." - Robb Wolf in Wired to Eat More About Robb Wolf Robb Wolf, a former research biochemist is the New York Times Best Selling author of The Paleo Solution – The Original Human Diet. 102 Esther Gokhale: Primal Posture For Wellness

Esther Gokhale has been involved in integrative therapies all of her life. As a young girl growing up in India, she helped her mother, a registered nurse, treat abandoned babies waiting to be adopted. This early interest led her to study biochemistry at Harvard and Princeton while later, acupuncture at the San Francisco school of Oriental medicine. REVIEW THE PODCAST | ENTER TO WIN 1 of 5 PRIZE PACKS | Full Details After crippling back pain during her first pregnancy and unsuccessful back surgery, she began her lifelong crusade to find a solution to back pain. Her studies at the Aplomb Institute in Paris and years of research in Burkina Faso, India, Portugal, and elsewhere led her to develop the Gokhale method which she has been teaching at her Palo Alto wellness center for over 15 years, and gives lectures for the ancestral health symposium, TEDX, google, and many more large organizations interested in posture’s effect on health, wellness and work.  Primal Posture for Wellness When did we ever stop paying attention to our primal posture? Even if someone does remind us to "stand up straight" or "sit tall," we either become easily distracted or we fail to have good posture and end up over-exerting ourselves.  Other cultures have shared good posture techniques for generations. They know how to bend, sit, and stand with a strong body. But our modern culture has lost something along the way. We're not the same active hunter-gatherers that our ancestors once were long ago. We've lost our primal instinct today because we either work at a desk for hours on end or we're doing other sedentary activities all day. We're naturally born with excellent posture and mobility, but as we move on in life, we tend to lose our good posture habits. On this episode of Wellness Force, we'll discuss how our modern culture has affected our posture and what we can do to fix it. For those with constant back pain or have lost the ability to move comfortably, Esther Gokhale of the Gokhale Method is here to help. Combining her experiences and knowledge about the human body, Esther has dedicated her life to changing our modern culture. With each workshop, lecture, and class, she is teaching us how we can achieve primal posture for wellness. Esther Gokhale is the creator of The Gokhale Method as well as the author of the book, 8 Steps to a Pain-Free Back: Natural Posture Solutions for Pain. Esther and her team have helped many people with back pain and decreased joint mobility all throughout the USA and the rest of the world. Not only does Esther teach us that it is possible to improve our posture and mobility, but she reminds us that without either, good health and wellness would be difficult to achieve. Just as nutrition and fitness are important for our bodies, so is excellent posture and mobility.  Listen to Episode 102 as Esther Uncovers Common misconceptions and myths about posture. Why we don't have to over-exaggerate our posture, but instead we should focus on core posture by standing and sitting naturally and comfortably. The reason why the "chin up and shoulders back" posture is unnatural and creates tension in our bodies. How to do a shoulder roll to improve your upper posture. How good posture translates into stretching and strengthening of the body. The negative effects of poor posture and how we can improve our health with good posture. The Gokhale Method 4 Levels of Learning: 1) Intellectual understanding of what movement you want to do. 2) The ability to do that movement when a teacher is helping you. 3) The ability to do that movement when you remember to do it. 4) When that movement becomes a habit. Why our environment affects our posture and movement habits. How sitting can actually be good for our bodies under the right circumstances. Standing vs. Sitting: How is each beneficial for the body and for how long should we be doing each activity? Why we're born with great posture and mobility, but our modern culture has worsened it. What we can do to change our posture and improve our back pain throughout our lives. Learn what the Gokhale Method is and how it can help you improve your posture. Why movement and dance breaks would be so beneficial for the human body during the work day. How to improve your fluxed position and swayed back. What you'll learn from Esther Gokhale's book, 8 Steps to a Pain-Free Back: Natural Posture Solutions for Pain. How do we strengthen our spine and inner-core set? How you can use the plank exercise correctly to strengthen your inner girdle and core. What's the best way to stand? What's the best position for your pelvis? The 6 Lessons in the Gokhale Method Foundations Course. How our posture can affect our emotional health. Top 3 Takeaways From The Show We might have believed it to be true, but sitting is not the new smoking. As long as we do a combination of sitting, standing, and movement in moderation all the while maintaining good posture, we can have strong, healthy bodies. Posture is the key to healthy joints and avoiding pain. Whether we're sitting, standing, or moving; we have to have good posture. The key is to not over-extend ourselves. We shouldn't have to "sit up straight" or "point our chins up" because those movements create tension. There are better, more comfortable movements that we can teach ourselves over time. Good posture is not only good for our bodies, but for our minds and emotions as well. Focusing on our posture can help reduce cortisol levels and increase testosterone levels. Power Quotes From Esther Gokhale "When you have good posture, then your every day life and activities become both your exercise and therapy." - Esther Gokhale "When we focus on pointing our chins up, it usually leads us to tense up the muscles in the back of our neck. This tension in the back of the neck is not healthy. Our chins want to elongate and point down towards the ground." - Esther Gokhale on why we shouldn't focus on pointing our chins up to try to achieve good posture.  "When you have good posture, then your every day life and activities become both your exercise and therapy. Every bend and step becomes a rep or a stretch. You're also taking care of a lot of your exercise needs. With poor posture, not only are you missing out on those stretches and strengthening repetitions, but you're actually creating wear and tear on your joints." - Esther Gokhale on how good posture can benefit our bodies while poor posture hurts it. "On average, people have great posture design and structure. However, it's up to the culture to either nurture and support this primal architecture that we're born with or to destroy it. Good posture can be destroyed with poorly designed furniture, directions such as "stand up straight, chin up," and even those electronic notifications that remind us to fix our posture." - Esther Gokhale on how good posture can decline because of culture.  "Culture is critical to posture and my life mission is to change the culture. My long-term goal is to create a healthy posture culture for modern people. It's possible and we have such an advantage to change our posture." - Esther Gokhale on her mission to help modern culture improve its posture.  "We blame sitting for our health problems, but it's actually incredibly gentle for the body. Of course you shouldn't just sit like a lump or sit with unhealthy posture in badly made furniture. However, if you sit well for moderate periods of time in half-decent furniture, sitting is really gentle for the system. It's so easy on the joints and our architecture." - Esther Gokhale on how sitting can be beneficial for our bodies with the right circumstances.  "Corporate jobs tend to keep people at their desks and don't allow them to move. Dance or movement breaks would be beneficial for the employees." - Esther Gokhale on how corporations can include movement as a part of their employees' work day.  "A lot of people will only make an extreme change when they're going through extreme pain. But this is an opportunity for everyone to get involved and be proactive. Proactive health is so much easier than reactive health." - Josh Trent on how we can take advantage of the Gokhale Method to actively improve our health.   Resources Mentioned by Esther & Josh Check out the official Gokhale Method website Learn more about Esther Gokhale Connect with Esther Gokhale on Twitter Read Esther's book, 8 Steps to a Pain-Free Back: Natural Posture Solutions for Pain Purchase your own Stretchsit Cushion - Gokhale Method Posture Solution Read Esther's blog post, Forward Pelvis: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Meet the Gokhale Method Teachers Find a Gokhale Method Class Location near you Join a free Gokhale Method Workshop Purchase other Gokhale Method products Watch more Gokhale Method videos Read the New York Times article, The Posture Guru of Silicon Valley Learn more about Kelly Starrett and MobilityWOD "Culture is critical to posture and my life mission is to change the culture." -Esther Gokhale Support This Podcast   Leave a 5 star review on iTunes Share this episode with someone you care about Contact Wellness Force Radio for podcast sponsorship and partnership opportunities Rate & Review Wellness Force Aloha! 101 Ian Ryan: Fearless And Healthy

"You realize that when you get to the core of it, wellness is really about taking care of yourself physically, mentally, and spiritually. Paying attention to all three will affect how you show up for everyone else" - Ian Ryan on the importance of paying attention to our bodies and minds.  REVIEW | ENTER TO WIN 1 of 5 PRIZE PACKS | Full Details For anyone who has ever felt the feelings of unworthiness that blocks them from living a fearless and healthy life, Ian Ryan is on a mission to inspire and share his message: We are all worthy beyond measure. On this episode of Wellness Force Radio episode, we'll discuss personal power, courage, and confidence needed to take imperfectly perfect action, knowing that anything is possible. Ian Ryan is the creator and host of the Fearless and Healthy Podcast, a top ranked iTunes podcast in health, self-help and education. With over 150 podcast episodes and counting, Ian has been interviewing some of the best minds in wellness and personal development that support grow in both mind and body. Become Fearless and Healthy With over 9 years experience as a highly sought after health coach, Ian believes in a holistic approach to wellness and putting a large emphasis on mastering mindset. His vision is to help one million people step into their true calling and live a healthy, confident and fearless life. Ian’s motivation to create www.fearlessandhealthy.com was in large part influenced by his 25 year old brothers death in January 2015. This tragedy was the catalyst behind his podcast, cross country move and desire to inspire people on a bigger scale. Ian believes that wellness can spark the change necessary to change lives both inside and out. On this eye-opening show, Ian shares his top advice for coping with tragic loss, getting re-connected with yourself in a modern world, and the steps he believes will allow anyone to become the person they are meant to be. Discover how you can tap into your fears and make the changes to live the life that you desire. Listen to Episode 101 as Ian Uncovers How he helps people with busy schedules to really focus on improving their physical and mental health. Why he values his alone time to focus on himself; especially during his morning rituals or breathing exercises. His personal story of how gaining the college Freshman Fifteen was a real wake up call for him to focus on his health. When he began building a career as a personal fitness trainer and what he learned from the initial experience. How his brother, Casey, struggled with drug addiction and the impact his death had on him. Why this tragic experience really pushed him to work harder to help people with their health and wellness. The moment when he decided to follow an uplifting life path and try to understand addiction by interviewing people for his magazine. The difference between acting out of fear and acting out of love. How we can begin to create behavior change and good habits. The reason behind him asking himself the following questions after his brother's death, "What type of impact have I had on this world? Were the lives of other people going to be better because I was here? How am I going to make the lives of other people better?" His fear of being video-taped and being seen in YouTube videos because of the reactions or comments that he would receive from the public. Why people hold themselves back from achieving the health or self-expression that they want. How we can choose our own journey by ignoring negative thoughts. The power behind focusing on doing something that's going to help us get to where we want to be while serving other people at the same time. Why there's no cookie cutter approach to living our lives. If we follow a "template" to live our lives, it can be so easy to get caught up in a shame spiral. His morning ritual that he tries to follow each day. Why it's okay if our morning isn't perfect and we don't do everything that we want to accomplish each day. How he adjusts his morning routine if he's traveling or doesn't have the time to complete everything. How he has used meditation as a tool to help him cope with the loss of his brother. How meditation, stillness, and journaling all help to work our brain muscles and build cognitive strength. Why it's okay to let go and not be consistent with journaling. We can give ourselves permission to not do something everyday. The magic behind why our life journey doesn't have to be like anyone else's. How positive thinking can change us: We don't have to live up to anyone's expectations and we're worthy on our own.  Top 3 Takeaways From The Show We don't have to allow a personal tragedy to lead us on a destructive path. We have the ability and power to live a life that can help others and as well as ourselves. If you're seeking to improve your life, you will find the right tools and assistance to help you get there. It's very common for someone to be afraid of what other people think about them. For example, we can easily fear judgement and not being accepted by our peers. But guess what? People are actually way more caught up in their own lives and problems than you think they might be. Other people don't have time to judge us because they're more caught up with what is going on with themselves. Many of us think we need to have a perfect morning ritual or a template to set ourselves up for the day, but life doesn't actually work like that. Life happens and the reality is that sometimes there's just not enough time to complete everything, but that's okay. Just use whatever time you have available to you to do something that empowers and motivates you to do your best each day. Even if you spend 10 minutes focusing on your breathing; that can be enough to start your day with positive emotions. Power Quotes From Ian Ryan "We're the architect of our own future and sometimes we forget that." - Ian Ryan of the Fearless and Healthy Podcast "You realize that when you get to the core of it, wellness is really about taking care of yourself physically, mentally, and spiritually. Paying attention to all three will affect how you show up for everyone else. You realize that when you get to the core of it, wellness is really about taking care of yourself physically, mentally, and spiritually. Paying attention to all three will affect how you show up for everyone else."- Ian Ryan on the importance of paying attention to our bodies and minds. "When we share the tragedies that we experience, it can help other people who are in similar situations." - Ian Ryan on how we can all heal by talking about difficult experiences. "Although my brother's death is a difficult topic for me to talk about, that life event shifted everything for me because I realized that no one is promised tomorrow. So many of us look at life as if we have time to put things off, but the reality is that life can be snatched away from you at any moment." - Ian Ryan on the impact of his brother's death. "A couple of different things can happen to the mind when we experience tragedy. We can either take it in a direction where we go into addiction or we can turn that pain into art and service for other people." - Josh Trent on how we cope with a tragedy. "It's nice to have a game plan and clarity, but the reality is that all of the pieces aren't going to make sense before you have to jump in and take action. So many of us think we're waiting for this magic bullet for everything to come together. The reality is that we have to jump, take action, and then figure things out along the way because life is a journey. Whatever area we want to change, we have to be able to step into it and be okay with imperfect action." - Ian Ryan on why it's okay to make changes in life without a perfect game plan.  "What type of impact do I want to make? I'm okay if my message doesn't resonate with everyone because it doesn't have to. However, if I don't do anything at all, then I'm not going to impact anyone." - Ian Ryan on how he got over his fear of sharing his message with YouTube videos. "We're the architect of our own future and sometimes we forget that. We get into reaction mode to everything else that's going on in the world. But sometimes we have to take a step back, breathe, look at the vision we have of ourselves, visualize what we want, and try to act in alignment with the person that we want to try to become." - Ian Ryan on how we can create a clear purpose and vision for ourselves.  "If I only had ten minutes to do a morning ritual, I wouldn't check my smartphone, laptop, or e-mail. I'd just sit there and be alone with my breath for a couple of minutes and be grounded. Even if it's just a 100 count breathing exercise, do something because I guarantee you that it's going to make a huge impact if you're consistent with it." - Ian Ryan on the benefits of doing breathing exercises on a daily basis even if we don't have a lot of time. "First make the commitment and decide that you're worthy of change. Just get started and realize that things will get better over time. You're going to build that emotional and physical muscle. You're going to get to where you want to be, but you just have to take that first step." -Ian Ryan on how you can use today to get started and make changes in your own life. "In life, we can either react to what this world throws at us in an unfavorable way or we can choose to tap into our hearts and live with purpose and power." - Ian Ryan from the Fearless and Healthy Podcast intro Resources Mentioned by Ian & Josh Check out the official Fearless and Healthy website Tune in to the Fearless and Healthy Podcast Listen to Josh's interview on the Fearless and Healthy Podcast: Josh Trent - Tackle Limiting Beliefs And Rewrite Your Story Take the Fearless and Healthy Body Type Quiz Complete the Fearless and Healthy 7 Day Metabolism Challenge  Listen to WFR Vipassana Meditation - A Spartan Race for the Mind with Josh Trent and Guest Host, Scott Colby Check out WFR Episode 097: Brainpower, Consciousness, & The Placebo Effect with Jesse Lawler Tune into WFR Episode 087: Upgrading Your Subconscious Beliefs with Bonnie Kelly Listen to WFR Episode 012 with Dan Pardi: Living a Healthy Lifestyle in a Modern World Check out WFR Episode 088 with Dan Pardi: Finding the Health You're Looking For Learn more about Mel Robbins and the 5 Second Rule Read The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho Visit Gary Vaynerchuk's official website Learn more about meditation with Dr. Joe Dispenza Find a CrossFit gym near you Support This Podcast Leave a 5 star review on iTunes Share this episode with someone you care about Contact Wellness Force Radio for podcast sponsorship and partnership opportunities Rate & Review Wellness Force Aloha! In our first clip, we’re talking about why wellness and achievement live in two different worlds. After 20 plus years as health and wellness professional, David believes that there is one universal reason that blocks most people from letting go off old their old weight. Let’s hear what and why right now with David, and be sure to listen to episode 072 for the full show.   Michael Strasner Michael Strasner is one of the most respected leading experts in personal transformation, and taught me in person how to open my heart in the advanced emotional intelligence and leadership course that changed my compass forever. This was a really emotional episode for me as from Micheal’s teachings, I was able to connect with my father after 2 years of not speaking, and let go of some weight I’d been carrying around for years. In this clip, Michael is talking with us about the difference between our feelings and emotions, and commitment to self, how we can harness energy to guide us towards wellness without letting emotions hold us back. Let’s drop in with Michael, and be sure to listen to episode 027 for the full show.   Tom Bilyeu Our next clip is with a powerful speaker, health entrepreneur, the co-founder of Quest Nutrition and the Host of Impact Theory, Tom Bilyeu. In this segment, Tom is talking about the promises we keep to ourselves and why. How his mission now with Impact theory spearheading a movement to facilitate mental transformation, both through its empowering content and by accelerating the businesses and entrepreneurs destined to change the world. Tom wants to free people from The Matrix. Said another way, he wants to end the poverty of poor mindset. Tom dives into what the no BS answer is that will help end metabolic disease and how understanding mythology and rituals can empower us in our wellness journey. Let’s listen in with Tom now and be sure to check out episode 098 for the full show.   Bonnie Kelly Our next guest is going to take you to the basement for some cleaning! In a good way. Bonnie Kelly, author, speaker, certified coach and my friend returns to wellness force radio to talk about her new book True To Your Core and how we perceive, interrupt, and experience reality is unique to all of us, just like your thumb print. Bonnie is talking about why neurologically, we are an endangered species. Bonnie is an expert in personal development and helping people heal from their past, and in this short clip she's explaining the science and real talk about how our brain chemistry is just like a computer, and like any computer, it can be reprogrammed with inspired action. From upgrading our subconscious beliefs to what it really takes to write a new story, Bonnie is giving us the clarity and the insights on why we do, what we do. Be sure to check out episode 087 for the full show.   Nir Eyal Nir Eyal is a best-selling author, speaker, and behavior change jedi-master that is educating people on how to build the sometimes challenging healthy habits we need to thrive in this technologically modern world. With the buzzing from apps, devices, and notifications pulling us away from our personal connections and conversations, Nir is teaching us about what he has come to know as the “Hook Model.” This is how companies create behaviors with technology that can benefit their users, or, turn them into addicts depending on their intention. In this clip, Nir pulls back the curtain for a look behind how companies use psychology to capture our attention, including triggers, actions, variable rewards and investment. Once we know how they do it, we can then consciously choose where we put our attention and avoid being disconnected from the relationships we care about. We can use technology to give us wellness, rather than take it away. You can hear Nir’s full story and mission on episode 048.   Daniel Schmachtenberger Prepare to get you brain fed high octane on our next clip. Daniel Scmachtenberger, the Co-Founder of The Neurohacker Collective, shares far beyond how a Nootropics like Qualia can provide a comprehensive hardware upgrade for radical cognitive enhancement and emotional resilience, but also how he believes it creates the building blocks towards a better planet. Daniel is sharing his brilliant mind and expertise of the body and brain to teach us the why, how, and what these cognitive enhancers can do the health and speed of our mind. The was one of my all time favorite episodes on the podcast where I shared my n=1 experiment using nootropics, so be sure to download episode 096 for the full story.   Lisa Perkins This is where we trust our process. Lisa Perkins my friend and nutrition expert, is uncovering exactly how we can trust ourselves when it comes to food, by using intuition, time, and focused attention. Lisa shares about how when it comes to nutrition, rules minus relationship equals rebellion. When we impose rules upon ourself without first trusting the promises we make to our body about nourishing it, it’s going to end in rebellion. She believes that easy is earned; in the beginning of any nutrition program, you’ll have to pay attention to yourself just like if you were learning any new skill. Lisa not only has the science and accredited background as a precision nutrition coach, but she also has a heart of gold. Click on episode 085 for the full show with Lisa.   Ryan Yokome What happens in your physical body when you hear the word money? Do you get loose or get tight? Our next clip is with Ryan Yokome, an internationally recognized expert in the field of personal transformation. Ryan is the CEO of Money & Miracles Breakthrough Coaching and essentially he believes that money is just an exchange of energy. The challenge comes when we have an unhealthy relationship with our energy around money that can deflect it. Ryan has an extraordinary presence you’ll feel in this clip. He shares about how a lack of expression as a teen blocked his physical and financial wellness as an adult, and the stages of work he went through to overcome the block to call in the money and health he always wanted. Set your player for episode 079 to hear the full show.   Dan Pardi Our last clip is with a man who needs no introduction - health and human behavior specialist, Dan Pardi. Dan’s return to Wellness Force Radio is shining light on how we can use what he calls HumanOS to cut through the noise of the overwhelming information online so we can really find the health we’re looking for. Dan’s mission and his systems of finding the right answers for our mind, body, and spirit are so profound, we put his voice in our show intro. So in this final clip, Dan shares why no matter how much we know, it won't always inspire us to take the right actions. "Knowing without doing is the same thing as not knowing. What matters is if the knowledge that you have will give you an effective health practice for the long term.” Dan is one of my most trusted sources for wellness so you’ll want to download episode 088 for later.   Join Us For The Next 100 Shows!   You’ve arrived at the end of the show but it’s all good, there hundreds more episodes to pull energy and inspiration from on your phone that’ll last you for weeks.
