Their material poverty resulted from spiritual faithfulness, but their spiritual wealth came from relationship with Christ. The primary battle wasn't against human opponents but against Satan himself. Remarkably, Smyrna received no rebuke because their suffering had sanctified them—hostility made them holy, persecution made them pure. Jesus promised them the crown of life, not as something to earn but as an inheritance already won through His death and resurrection.
