Investing in the Medical Technologies of Tomorrow | Rachel Butler, President, Catalytic Impact Foundation

The video is an interview with Rachel Butler, the President of the Catalytic Impact Foundation (CIF). CIF is a unique type of organization that integrates philanthropy and venture capital to develop cures for diseases that are often overlooked. The foundation is a 501 C three public charity that invests donated capital in early-stage companies that are developing technologies to address healthcare problems. CIF makes equity investments instead of grants and operates like an early-stage venture capital fund. The difference is that CIF has no limited partners, and if a company they invest in makes money, it gets reinvested back into the fund. CIF focuses on investing in companies that are in the valley of death, a period where they may not be quite to proof of concept, or they haven't built their team to the degree yet that they will eventually. CIF invests in areas that don't get enough funding, such as women's health, children's health, and rare diseases. The reason these areas don't get enough attention varies, but in part, it's because there is not enough money to be made. 00:24- About Rachel Butler Rachel Butler is the president of The Catalytic Impact Foundation, an organization that invests in early-stage life science companies that address unmet medical needs. With an emphasis on Women's and Children’s health, Rachel helped her organization launch a unique platform called “regenerative philanthropy.” Using donated capital and an evergreen model, CIF makes impact investments in cutting-edge companies. Returns go back into the fund to be recycled for more impact, resulting in a platform that is targeted, impactful, and scalable.
