Irish Storytelling & The Art Of Conversation (feat. Morrissey’s Roy Connaughton)

Whether you’re at a pub, a coffee shop, or in line at the DMV, striking up a conversation with a stranger can be intimidating. That said, I’m convinced it’s one of foundations of living a curious life.   You may just have a kind interaction but you never know, you may be sitting across from a future close friend, or in Roy Connaughton’s case, a future friend and your future Irish Pub co-owner.   With the convenient distraction of a cell phone in our pocket at all times, we’ve never had an easier excuse to not strike up conversation, but Roy says that it’s not that simple. Growing up in Ireland pre-cellphones and social-media, there’s always been an excuse to not strike up conversation but it you can get over that hurdle… you never know where in the world life will take you!   Roy Connaughton is one of the owners of Morrissey’s Irish Pub in Minneapolis, MN and a new friend of mine and I wasn’t expecting how deep this conversation ended up going. This my friends, is why I do this.    ALSO! Next week, I’ll be at Morrissey’s hosting their St. Patrick’s Day 2020 celebrations! Come swing out and LET’S CHEERS over a pint of Guinness!   For more information, visit: www.thecuriouspod.com/morrisseys

Question 74 // How'd you become a chef? (feat. Shane Oporto & Special Guest Laura Lou)

Shane Oporto is best known for his time as executive chef at Octo Fishbar and “Chef de Cuisine” at La Belle Vie.   We talk about how, seemingly overnight, Shane went from working behind the scenes as a Chef to being asked to give interviews and being flown all over the world to cook for private events. Wait… that sounds a lot like my first gig with Owl City, being thrown on a private jet with my close friends to open for The Frey. I tell that too but it has me wondering… is there anything else bassists and chefs have in common? Laura Lou joins Shane and I for drinks at DeGidio’s Restaurant & Bar in St. Paul… let’s jump in a booth with some mics to see what happens.    Call The Podcast Hotline: (612) 584-9330   Visit www.thecuriouspod.com for show-notes and guest info.

Question 73 // What’s the official cocktail of New Orleans? (feat. The Sazerac House)

What’s the best way to really taste whisky? How are cocktails and ‘Coffee Houses’ historically connected? Can the way you order a cocktail make you a better traveler? What’s the official cocktail of New Orleans (seriously… it’s the only city in America that’s passed legislation to have an official cocktail!) and how can you make it at home?   Join Rob and Sarah as they travel to New Orleans to meet up with their friend Miguel Solorzano, the general manager of The Sazerac House, to answer these questions and more.   Recording Location: The Official Tasting Room on the 3rd floor of The Sazerac House in New Orleans          ------------------------------ GUEST LINKS: https://www.sazerachouse.com/     ------------------------------ Call The Official Podcast Hotline: (612) 584-9330  Visit Recording Locations: www.thecuriouspod.com/map Subscribe on iTunes: www.thecuriouspod.com/itunes Subscribe via RSS: www.thecuriouspod.com/rss Like us on Facebook: www.thecuriouspod.com/facebook Follow us on Instagram: www.thecuriouspod.com/instagram   ------------------------------   This Week’s Sponsor: Blackwing 602

Lefty: “What’re ya looking for?” Me: “I have no damn clue…” (or “What I ask when looking for a recommendation”)

Sarah and I are smashing beignets at Cafe Du Monde in the French Quarter of New Orleans. We just left Euclid, a record store on the East side of town with a stack of vinyl and I’m suddenly struck with a realization… The reason I just had such a killer experience discovering new music is directly related to a conversation I had with my friends Ian and Jorge this last summer about coming up with a better question to ask when asking for a recommendation. Sushi, beer, food, cocktails, music… doesn’t matter. This shit works and I wish I would have known about it years ago!   Ian's Ep: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/question-6-what-makes-someone-influencer-feat-ian-allison/id1231166203?i=1000385712861     podcast hotline: (612) 584-9330      website | map | itunes | instagram | intro song | YouTube

Question 72 // How’d you get into vinyl records? (feat. Down In The Valley’s Scott Farrell & Steven Williams)

Scott Farrell and Steven Williams work for Down In The Valley Record Store in Golden Valley, MN. If you’ve been following along with the podcast, you know that I’ve been falling in love with listening to music on vinyl for the first time in my life, but here’s the drop… I’m still an idiot when it comes to the subject. So, it’s no surprise that, when I met the two of them at a record store pop-up at Boom Island Brewery (and it turned out they were not only more smartest than me but crazy fun to talk too) I knew I had to get together to record a conversation.   Does vinyl ACTUALLY sound better? Doest the weight (grams) of an album influence how it sounds? How’d they personally fall in love with vinyl? Join me and the guys in the back of Down In The Valley Record Store as they answer these questions and more.   Recording Location: Down In The Valley Record Store, Golden Valley, MN  Down In The Valley: https://downinthevalley.com/   My First Convo With Steven: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/daily-guinness-intro-to-buying-vinyl-records-feat-steven/id1231166203?i=1000450678208       Call The Official Podcast Hotline: (612) 584-9330  Visit Recording Locations: www.thecuriouspod.com/map Subscribe on iTunes: www.thecuriouspod.com/itunes Subscribe via RSS: www.thecuriouspod.com/rss Like us on Facebook: www.thecuriouspod.com/facebook Follow us on Instagram: www.thecuriouspod.com/instagram Watch The Podcast And Behind The Scenes On YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/therobmorgan

Rob Morgan Is A Curious GUEST (Derek Droogsma Podcast "Catching Up With...")

I’ve had quite a few requests through the podcast hotline and website email asking for us to bring in someone to flip the norm and interview ME on the podcast. While we haven’t quite figured out the right fit for what that would look like, I’ve decided to start sharing some of the other podcast interviews that I’ve been brought in to be a guest on over the past couple years. Derek Droogsma is a musician in the twin cities area who interviewed me this summer for his new podcast “Catching Up With…” Join us as we talk get meta talking about recording podcasts, why I think long form recorded conversation is so important to us, and how finding myself alone and homesick in a hotel suite in Shanghai China changed the way I look at my future career in music. The Complicated Relationship Of Numbers And Art

If you’ve been on social media this past week, you may have noticed artists and musicians sharing screenshots of what Spotify calls their “year-in-review.” (It essentially gives an artist analytics on number of streams of each song or album and where in the world people are listening to their music.    I’ve been loving seeing artist friends say thank you to everyone listening to their music and talk about how encouraged they are to see those numbers grow but then I got to thinking…   What happens when you look at the numbers… and it’s not what you expected? What happens when less people come out to your show than you were hoping? What happens when less people are reading your new blog than you had expected by now? What happens when you look at the numbers… and are discouraged?    I’ve got the morning off in a hotel room, downtown Omaha Nebraska, and I want to share four questions that I ask myself whenever I’m discouraged by the numbers that I believe will help you if you ever find yourself in that situation.   https://austinkleon.com/keepgoing/   https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/episode-65-the-way-it-works/id956742638?i=1000360493681         podcast hotline: (612) 584-9330      website | map | itunes | instagram | intro song | YouTube

+++ Let’s Cheers! - How To Reach Out To Someone You Admire To “Pick Their Brain Over Coffee”

Have you ever wanted to reach out to someone you respect to get together for advice but didn’t know how to ask?   Maybe, you hit someone up already but didn’t get a ‘yes’ or EVEN WORSE… you never got a response. The act of reaching out to people you respect is a catalyst to living a curious life, but nothing makes a person’s eyes roll back in their head far enough to watch their own hair grow from the inside out than a vague, “I’d love to pick your brain…” email.   So… how the hell do we even go about it? In today’s “Let’s Cheers” podcast I outline 3 things you should keep in mind when doing this, so grab an americano and join me in the shadow of a cathedral in… Boise Idaho? What?… to learn more.     podcast hotline: (612) 584-9330      website | map | itunes | instagram | intro song | YouTube
