Can Black People Be Racist? | MiniPod
Racism, Race-baiting, and Why Is It All About Race Anyway? Our hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Tiffany cross weigh the age-old question: can Black people be racist? Well first it depends what we mean when we say “racism.” Moreover, why is it that every time someone tries to point out structural racism online, some troll just has to accuse them of “race-baiting”? Let’s talk about it. If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/ Welcome home y’all! —--------- We want to hear from you! Government Showdown and Target Shutdown
Shutdown or Shut Up: Why Won’t Dems Fall in Line? Reflecting on Bloody Sunday This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum have a call to action: fast from Target. Pastor Jamal Bryant has called for a fast of Target stores, a 40 day boycott that started on March 6th. The company has rolled back DEI initiatives despite being one of the largest employers of Black Americans. Our hosts check on the progress of the fast and discuss how to minimize harm. A government shutdown is looming, funding runs out at midnight this Friday unless Congress can pass a new budget. Republicans want to pass a stop-gap measure called a “continuing resolution,” a slimmed down version of the current budget that would put off decisions on a new budget until the Fall. They need Democratic votes to get it through the Senate. Is there any reason Democrats should comply? While the new Education Secretary Linda McMahon lays off 50% of the Department of Education’s workforce, Trump sends threatening letters to universities. Citing civil rights laws, the Trump admin says it will pull federal funding from schools that allow pro-Palestinian protests. We’ve just passed the 60th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, when civil rights marchers fighting for the right to vote were attacked by police while peacefully marching across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. How far have we come since then? And of course we’ll hear from you! The People’s Response to MAGA
The Forming of the Revolution was Televised! The Opposition Gets in Formation at SOTU This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum offer some counter programming to Trump’s “State of the Union” address. On the same days as the speech, Angela Rye along with Joy Reid and others gathered an incredible lineup of Black leaders for a 24 hour livestream, dubbing it The State of the People. Rather than responding to the propaganda, this prolific gathering offered an alternative path forward, choosing to see this moment as an opportunity, not just a setback. Get inspired and energized, watch the full stream on NLP’s YouTube channel and at stateofthepeople.media There was some DRAMA during Trump’s SOTU though. Rep. Al Green was escorted out after he brandished his cane and shouted at Trump, and a cohort of Democrats walked out on their own, led mainly by Black Women of the progressive and Black caucases’. We spoke with representatives on their way out, including Maxwell Frost, Ayanna Pressley, Jasmine Crockett, Maxine Waters, and more. Finally, it looks like the Target boycott had a little bit of an effect. According to Similarweb, Target web traffic was down 1.0% to 4.7 million on Feb. 28 compared to the previous Friday's 4.8 million and traffic on the Target app was down 10.9% to 3.5 million users compared to 3.9 million the previous Friday. America For Sale
The discussion highlights the devastating impacts of proposed cuts to Medicaid and SNAP, posing risks to millions. The loss of representation in media, particularly with Joy Reid's cancellation, raises questions about visibility in news. As Trump dismantles democratic structures, the hosts debate whether Democrats should attend his State of the Union. Celebrating their first NAACP Image Award, they underscore the essence of advocacy and community engagement, urging active participation in shaping a more equitable future.
