#020 - Terminator: Dark Fate

Baron and The Doc vowed to take on an action-packed, explosive, car-chase-filled, as brainless as possible, mainstream film after two weeks of festival films. And boy, did they find their film. Terminator: Dark Fate. Starring Linda Hamilton, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mackenzie Davis and Natalia Reyes. Directed by Tim Miller. It's just been released for streaming in Australia. This film is right up Baron's alley, but Doc had to do a little research first, and it was obvious from the get go that this was going to be a fun conversation! Tune in to hear what Doc and Baron thought of the latest instalment in the Terminator franchise.   You can also check out the video ep on Youtube: https://youtu.be/Mws0qpbzX20

#019 - First and Last Men (The last MIFF 68½ edition)

This is the last film of Melbourne International Film Fest! Baron and Doc started with First Cow, and they have ended with First and Last Men. It just feels right, doesn't it? First and Last Men is the creation of the late and great Jóhann Jóhannsson, Baron's favourite composer. He also directed and adapted the script for this film, which is narrated by Tilda Swinton. The Doc and Baron mostly agree on the strengths and weaknesses of this film, but the unusual approach and subject matter takes them down some unexpected paths. Tune in to hear what they think and what the film reminds them of. As usual, spoiler alerts abound and any criticisms come from a place of love for film.  Watch on Youtube: https://youtu.be/in1dOw_X_bY

#018 - Ema (Special MIFF 68½ edition)

Baron and The Doc the MIFF closing night film, Ema, directed by Pablo Larraín, starring  Mariana Di Girolamo and Gael García Bernal. Ema is an exuberant Chilean film about youth, family, modern love and dance, set in the striking town of Valparaíso. Melbourne International Film Festival delivers a closing night film with lots of talking points, that The Doc and Baron have very different perspectives on. Tune in to hear what they think and what the film reminds them of. As usual, spoiler alert, as the ending and many of the twists are revealed and dissected!  Watch on Youtube: https://youtu.be/KqwqU9kGymE

#017 - Exile (Special MIFF 68½ edition)

Baron and The Doc dive into Exile, directed by Visar Morina, starring Misel Maticevic. Exile is another challenging film from the Melbourne International Film Festival and  polarises Doc and Baron on many points, and finds them enthusiastically agreeing on others. Tune in to hear what they think and what the film reminds them of. Spoiler alert! When getting into this film Baron and the Doc talk all about the film's fascinating ending.  Watch on Youtube: https://youtu.be/cFhxtI_I89c

#016 - Shirley (Special MIFF 68½ edition)

Baron and The Doc talk about Shirley, directed by Josephine Decker, starring Elisabeth Moss in the titular role, Odessa Young, Michael Stuhlbarg and Logan Lerman. Shirley was another late addition to the Melbourne International Film Festival, and another one that Doc and Baron couldn't resist. Tune in to hear what Baron and the Doc thought of this film, a twisted love triangle plus one, filled with psychological mind games and manoeuvring, based (very loosely) on the life of the author Shirley Jackson.   Watch on Youtube: https://youtu.be/8McDBPrFgUU

#015 - She Dies Tomorrow (Special MIFF 68½ edition)

Baron and The Doc review She Dies Tomorrow, directed by Amy Seimetz, starring Kate Lyn Sheil, Jane Adams, and a lot of cameos you'll recognise. She Dies Tomorrow was a late addition to the Melbourne International Film Festival, one that Doc and Baron couldn't resist because it has such a great premise. Tune in to hear what Baron and the Doc thought of this unconventional and challenging film that has entered the spotlight because of its catchy new take on the pandemic sub-genre. https://2020.miff.com.au/film/she-dies-tomorrow/

#014 - Corpus Christi (Special MIFF 68½ edition)

Baron and The Doc review the academy nominated Corpus Christi, a polish film directed by Jan Komasa. As the poster states, the film is about a sinner, a priest, and a mystery. But it's so much more than that and Baron and the Doc have a great conversation about their interpretations of the film and what it reminds them of. Listen now, and watch out for this one when it when it hits streaming services. https://2020.miff.com.au/film/corpus-christi-special-preview-screening/

#013 - Black Bear (Special MIFF 68½ edition)

Baron and The Doc review Black Bear, directed by Lawrence Michael Levine, starring Aubrey Plaza, Sarah Gadon, and Christopher Abbott. Black Bear was a spot Light film at the Melbourne International Film Festival. Baron and the Doc dig into plot-twisting tale of a love triangle, cooked two ways. It's genre bending, uncomfortable at times, hilarious at others. The film has had it's moment at MIFF, but watch out for it when it hits streaming services - it's one you can't miss. https://2020.miff.com.au/film/black-bear-program-spotlight/
