FF 153 - Jason Spyres Served 15 Years for Pot, Now he's Studying at Stanford

On today's show Jason Spyres joined John to discuss the major injustice he suffered as a result of selling cannabis in his teens. Jason was arrested on drug charges nearly 20 years ago. In the years since, he’s been on a path of personal success and growth. When he was 19 years old, he was arrested for selling cannabis during an undercover sting, and until recently, the state of Illinois had kept him out of society for it. Jason served 15 years of a 30-year prison sentence. Once Jason got a taste of freedom, he pushed relentlessly for his goals. While on work release he worked 2 jobs and took on a full slate of college classes to work towards his goal of becoming an engineer. Currently, Jason is enrolled at Stanford University and is actively petitioning the Governor of Illinois for a full pardon. Jason will be the first to tell you that he's not doing this for himself, but to blaze a trail for those who do not have the resources to fight for themselves.  Learn more about your ad choices. FF 152 - Lisa Hanna Served 15 Years on Bogus Charges, NOW She's a Lawyer

On today's episode Lisa Hanna join John to share her remarkable story. Lisa is a US Army veteran, having served 2 tours overseas. She graduated from Thomas M. Cooley Law School, in 1993. However, she suffered a personal tragedy months earlier when her son passed away. Drugs and alcohol became Lisa’s medication to numb the depression after her only son's death. She did get clean and left her abusive husband Scott. Then Scott was busted with methamphetamine, marked bills, and stolen guns. When pressured by prosecutors he agreed to “cooperate” in exchange for a reduced sentence. He said Lisa was his source, which she claims is not true. Lisa was charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute a substance containing Methamphetamine. She served more than 15 years in federal prison. While in prison, Lisa wrote a book called Prison Bitch, a humorous memoir covering her time inside federal female camps and prisons. When Lisa got out of prison she kept pushing and reached her goal to become a lawyer! She was sworn in recently is and she can legally practice law. Lisa hopes to help other women who have been targeted on trumped up conspiracy charges to avoid the nightmare she lived for over 15 years.  Learn more about your ad choices. Today on Felony Friday Rocky Ferrenburg joins John to talk about prison reform, namely the First Step Act. This Rocky's 2nd time on Felony Friday. He shared his story back on Episode 107 of this show.  Rocky is a multiple felon who resides in Idaho. Rocky is in recovery after struggled with drug addiction and collectively has spent about 2 years incarcerated. Rocky has been clean for more than 6 years and during that time graduated with multiple degrees, plays in a rock band, donates time and energy to the community, speaks at drug rehabilitation centers, ran for a state-level office in Idaho and is the host of the The Noisemaker Podcast: a place to discover music and artists that you may have never found anywhere else.
