ELL 108: U.S. Culture War and Venezuela Civil War
On this week's Electric Libertyland Brian talks the dangers of government defining and punishing "hate speech", doctors getting burned out because of government data-entry requirements, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's amazing ability to see into the future. Brian then looks at the depressing media coverage of Nick Sandmann and Nathan Phillips and laments that the media is more concerned with the cultural civil war they are propagating in America than an actual civil war in Venezuela. 384. Jordan Page's Mind Blowing Path to Liberty
In today's flagship Lions of Liberty podcast, Marc is joined by libertarian musician Jordan Page! Jordan dives deep on his path to becoming a libertarian, which all began after a strange dream led him to writing a song about (inadvertently) the Ron Paul Revolution. Jordan explains a series of odd events that led to him dedicating his life to spreading the ideas of liberty through his music. Jordan also details the background behind the tragic murder of rancher Lavoy Finicum by federal agents, and shares the inspirational song "The Ballad of Lavoy Finicum" with our audience. Jordan also explains the case of Schaeffer Cox, another case of injustice which Jordan will soon be releasing a song about. FF 159 - Separated from her Daughters for 23 Years for a Non-violent Crime
On today's episode Terry Anderson joins John to share her story. Terry was charged with Conspiracy to Manufacture and Distribute Meth and Conspiracy to Money Launder. She received a 30 year sentence, leaving her two 12 year-old daughters (at the time) to be raised by her family. The prosecutors were able to hang such a large sentence on Terry, because they labeled her as a Kingpin when she refused to cooperate with their plea deal games. Terry received clemency on January 1, 2017. She has stayed positive and is cherishing every moment that she gets to spend with her two daughters. Learn more about your ad choices. ELL 107: New Bill Clarifies Private Citizens Are Second to Government Workers
On this week's Electric Libertyland Brian gets into the morally bankrupt media attacking Rand Paul for using a Canadian hospital, debunks the 70% tax rate argument and then loses his mind over a new bill that would deny lenders and landlords collecting from any government worker during the shutdown: a clear preference for the well being of their own over private citizens. Brian then turns his attention to CA Governor Gavin Newsom's elitist nonsense from his inaugural address and the Los Angeles teacher's strike, which began this week. Finally, Brian wraps up looking at Gillette's new "Toxic Masculinity" ad, and then discusses Bolton and Pompeo's recent troubling remarks and their impact on America's occupation of the Middle East. 383. It's Time to Decentralize the National Parks!
In this week's flagship Lions of Liberty podcast, Marc is joined by Ryan McMaken of the Mises Institute to discuss his recent article "Government Shutdown Shows Why We Need to Decentralize National Parks." After Marc and Ryan catch up and vent about the nature of social media commentary, they dig into the issue of national parks in the context of the current government shutdown. Ryan breaks down the problems with a federal monopoly over the National Parks and Forests, and why local and private control would prevent the destruction and neglect occurring during the government shutdown. They look at how private businesses and communities are incentivized to care for and protect the land, and why it is far less likely the land will be overtaken by "greedy capitalists" when they are no longer under the control of the Federal government. 382. Should Libertarians Support a UBI Over the Current Welfare State?
On today's flagship Lions of Liberty podcast, Marc hosts a lively debate on the concept of a Universal Basic Income guarantee! While most libertarians would oppose a UBI on it's surface, there are those who see it as a practical replacement for the current welfare state. Today, Marc welcomes Michael Munger, professor of political science at Duke University, and Antony Sammeroff, co-host of the Scottish Liberty Podcast and author of Universal Basic Income: For and Against to debate the resolution, "The Universal Basic Income should be supported by libertarians as a replacement for the current welfare state, Social Security system, and minimum wage regulations." Munger speaks in favor, while Sammeroff speaks against. This was a blast to record and I'm sure you'll all enjoy it!
