S2 Ep1041: Women in Leadership, part 2: 1 Timothy 2
In this second installment of my current research on women in leadership, I focus on what I’ve learned from researching 1 Timothy 2:8-15. I tediously work my way through this important passage and evaluate both complementation and egalitarian interpretations of this text.

S2 Ep1040: Misreading Scripture and Phoebe the Letter Carrier (and Interpreter?): Dr. E. Randy Richards
Randy is a world renowned expert on several theological and historical subjects related to the New Testament. In this conversation, we talk about misreading the Bible through western eyes (the title of one of his books) and letter writing and carrying in the ancient world as it applies to the question of Phoebe who might have carried and interpreted Paul’s lengthy letter to the Roman church (Rom 16:1-2).
Randy is the Research Professor of New Testament at Palm Beach Atlantic University, having recently stepped down from being Provost after sixteen years in administration. He has been teaching since 1986, originally at a state university and then abroad at an Indonesian seminary. Upon returning to the States, he served at two Christian universities before joining Palm Beach Atlantic University in 2006. His wife Stacia has joyfully accompanied him from jungles of Indonesia to rice fields in Arkansas to beaches in South Florida and now recently to the plains of Wisconsin. Randy has authored, co-authored or edited nearly a dozen books, from technical books on Greco-Roman papyri to popular books with over 100,000 copies sold.

S2 Ep1039: Are We Being Discipled By Our Phones? Jay Kim
Short answer–absolutely we are. But not in a good way. From addiction to tech, to feeding the outrage machine, to diminishing our capacity to do deep work, our phones are stunting our growth into Christ-likeness and Jay helps us figure out how to get out of the vicious cycle.
Jay serves as the lead pastor at WestGate Church in the Silicon Valley and is the author of several books including: Analog Church (IVP, 2020), Analog Christian (2022) (which is the focus of our podcast conversation), 40 Days through the Book: Colossians (2022), and a contributing author to Before You Lose Your Faith (2021), Red Skies (2022), and The Upside Down Kingdom Study Bible (2024). His written work has also been featured in Christianity Today, The Gospel Coalition, Missio Alliance, Outreach, and Relevant Magazine.

S2 Ep1038: Good Sex, Bad Sex, and Marriage: Dr. Juli Slattery
Dr. Juli Slattery is a clinical psychologist, author, speaker and the president/co-founder of Authentic Intimacy. Juli earned her college degree at Wheaton College, an MA in psychology from Biola University, and an MS and a Doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from Florida Institute of Technology.
In this podcast conversation, I talk to Juli about her latest book God, Sex, and Your Marriage, which leads into a quite raw conversation about sex, good sex, bad sex, sexual abuse, female sexuality, sexual identities, and much more. This conversation is tasteful and theologically rich, and it is also quite explicit at times (as any authentic conversation should be).

S2 Ep1036: The Gospel and Empire: Dr. Warren Carter
Dr. Warren Carter is the LaDonna Kramer Meinders Professor of New Testament at Phillips Seminary in Tulsa OK. From 2007-2019, he was Professor of New Testament at Brite Divinity School, TCU, Fort Worth TX. Before going to Brite, he was Pherigo Professor of New Testament at Saint Paul School of Theology in Kansas City MO. A native of New Zealand, he is a graduate of Victoria University of Wellington (BA: BA(Honors) First Class), the Melbourne College of Divinity (Bachelor of Divinity; Masters of Theology) and Princeton Theological Seminary NJ (PhD in New Testament Studies). Dr. Carter has written numerous books on the New Testament including The Roman Empire and the New Testament: An Essential Guide and What Does Revelation Reveal? Unlocking the Mystery.
In this episode, I talk to Warren about imperial-critical readings of the New Testament and what it means to read the New Testament with the Roman Empire not in the background but in the foreground. Warren talks about the relationship between Romans 13 and Revelation 13, the real meaning of Jesus’s “render unto Caesar” statement, how Jesus’s healings subvert empire, and the relationship between ancient Rome and modern America.

S2 Ep1035: The Gospel is Political: Dr. Patrick Schreiner
The gospel is political, but not partisan. The church is a profoundly political community. When we claim Jesus as Lord, we are also quite dangerously claiming that Caesar is not. These are the kinds of things Patrick and I discuss in this somewhat provocative episode. Dr. Patrick Schreiner is the Director of the Residency PhD program and Associate Professor of New Testament and Biblical Theology at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He previously taught at Western Seminary in Portland Oregon (2014–20) and received his Ph.D. from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (2014). Patrick is the author of several books including his recently released Political Gospel: Public Witness in a Politically Crazy World, which is the topic of our conversation.
