#69 – 3 Tips To Develop Confidence | Monday Motivation

Confidence is such a vital aspect of life. It can take us to a whole new level. It’s what makes David believe he can beat Goliath. It’s what spurs us to take calculated risks that change our lives. Outside of that, being confident just feels good. It’s that extra pep in our step. But where does it come from and how do we cultivate it? I have found that confidence comes from 3 places: past experience, preparation and self-talk. In this episode, I dive into how to use each of these 3 tactics to develop more confidence in any area of your life. #68 – How To Carve Your Own Path In Life | Yogi Roth

Yogi Roth is a tough person to pinpoint.  He has interests and accomplishments in a lot of areas.   He’s a walk-on-turned-full-scholarship wide receiver.  He’s a college football analyst. He’s a writer. He’s a documentary producer.  He’s a world traveler. He admitted that it’s even hard to introduce himself sometimes. His mission is crystal clear, though: To seek & uncover the humanity in sports around the globe through storytelling.   In this episode, we talk about his drive, how he landed Pete Carroll as a mentor & friend and how he uses visualization & meditation to improve his craft. Here are 7 things I learned from my interview with Yogi: Seek and Enjoy We’re all seekers – seeking our dream job, the perfect spouse, our big break.  Seeking is normal. What’s abnormal is enjoying every step of it. Enjoying the heartache and obstacles that are in the way of what we’re seeking.  That’s Yogi’s mantra: “seek and enjoy”. Recruit Your Mentor I asked Yogi “How does the 25-year-old listening to this podcast get great mentors like you did?”  His answer? Recruit them. It’s never been easier to get in touch with someone.  Whether it’s by email, phone, handwritten letter or Instagram DM, everyone is accessible.  If you’re persistent and add value, you can recruit the perfect mentor. He even goes a step further to call these mentors his “Life Board of Directors” and include some of the most notable coaches in the world, professional athletes and executives at Nike.   The Stapler Rule When Yogi was 19-years-old, he was an Assistant Coach for Pete Carroll at USC.  Pete told Yogi that he didn’t need to worry about climbing the ladder rung by rung if he added value at each step. Yogi took this as a challenge to add tremendous value at the smallest of tasks.  His sole job at one point was to staple papers together for the playbook. He vowed that he would be the absolute best stapler that the coaching staff had ever seen.  He added value. “How you do small things is how you do all things.” – Michael Gervais Enjoy The Space Between The Notes Most of us (myself included) go through life jumping from note to note.  From waking up to a workout to work to dinner to sleep and over again. Yogi prides himself in being able to enjoy the space between the notes – whether it’s a 15-minute crunch to get s quick workout in or a month-long international trip in the offseason – he finds time and cherishes it. Do The Lonely Work Yogi is a grinder.  He attributes a lot of his success in his ability to do the lonely work. Whoever can do the boring work the longest will win.  If you sit down and write that blog, make that cold call or even staple that next paper – you’re inching your way closer to success. The Power of Visualization Like many successful people, Yogi uses visualization to give himself a mental edge.  He treats every college football broadcast as if it were The Rose Bowl. He knows that if he puts himself in that mentally place enough times now that he’ll be ready once he’s actually there. Be Authentic We got deep here.  Being authentic is really hard for millennials.  Especially for me. It’s something I’ve worked really hard at and am still not great at it.   Be yourself.  Show your quirks.  That’s what makes you stand out and makes you, you. #67 – If You Want To Be A Winner, Do What Winners Do | Monday Motivation From Vince Lombardi

“Winning is not a sometime thing; it's an all time thing. You don't win once in a while, you don't do things right once in a while, you do them right all the time. Winning is habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.” - Vince Lombardi I know a lot of winners in this world.  Whether it’s people in my family, colleagues or athletes and celebrities that I use as virtual mentors, they’re easy to spot.  They have a certain aura about them. People want to be around them. The reason they’re so easy to spot is that it’s really hard to be a winner.  As Vince Lombardi stated in the above quote, winning is not a sometime thing.  And it’s not something that happens by chance. It’s developed by habits and traits developed meticulously over time.   Here are 26 traits that I’ve seen are common amongst the winners in my life:   1) They are disciplined in all areas of life. 2) They treat others well, regardless of who the person is. 3) They are humble. They remove their ego. 4) They are the hardest workers in the room. 5) They know their priorities and stick to them 6) They show up early, respect other's time 7) They visualize success 8) They wake up early 9) They prioritize their wellness/health 10) They persist until they succeed 11) They become masters of their craft 12) They don't take "no" for an answer 13) They turn obstacles into opportunities 14) They know success & wealth are a LONG journey 15) They invest in themselves 16) They don't dwell on failures or successes 17) They set goals and stick to them 18) They are problem solvers 19) They are genuinely curious 20) They are authentic 21) They can handle pressure-packed situations 22) They have grit 23) They have empathy for others 24) They have a tremendous sense of humor 25) They associate with other winners 26) Winners WIN The last one, “winners win” is important.  It means they don’t just win in one category, they take their winning mindset and apply it to every important area in their life - personal, professional, family, health, etc.  That’s why guys like Jesse Itzler can run 100 miles, have a strong relationship with his kids and wife and also be a wildly successful entrepreneur. Which of these traits do you embody?  Which can you improve on? It’s time to go be a winner. Listen Here: iTunes Google Play Stitcher Sign up for the weekly Millennial Momentum Newsletter. #66 – Why Authenticity Is The Key To Leadership | Kristen Hadeed

Kristen Hadeed didn’t set out to be the CEO of a fast-growth company or a consultant to companies looking to fix their culture. All she wanted was a pair of jeans. That pair of jeans was motivating enough for Kristen to begin her entrepreneurial journey in cleaning apartments while attending the University of Florida. That quick search for cash turned into Student Maid, a cleaning company that hires students. In the last 10 years at Student Maid, Kristen has had some SERIOUS growing pains including a time where 75% of her company quit on her - all at the same time. She is an open book and recently wrote “Permission To Screw Up”, detailing the biggest mistakes she’s made in leadership. In a day where everyone is craving Instagram likes and filtering every picture, Kristen’s authenticity and vulnerability is a breath of fresh air. That helps to explain why Student Maid has become a successful company, how she got Simon Sinek to become her mentor and why other businesses are seeking her out to explain how to build such a strong culture. “It's not failure if you're learning from it.” Listen Here: iTunes Google Play Stitcher Follow Kristen: Personal Site Student Maid Site Permission To Screw Up LinkedIn Instagram Twitter Facebook Sign up for the weekly Millennial Momentum Newsletter. #63 – Trust The Process | Monday Motivation From Nick Saban

Trust the process. While it's great to dream big and think long-term, the process is what you need to focus on daily. It's the small tasks that add up over time to make you successful. In this episode, I dive into Ryan Holiday's writing about Nick Saban to identify how YOU can use the process to your advantage. "Don't think about winning the SEC Championship. Don't think about the national championship. Think about what you need to do in this drill, on this play, in this moment. That's the process: Let's think about what we can do today, the task at hand." - Nick Saban Listen Here: iTunes Google Play Stitcher Sign up for the weekly Millennial Momentum Newsletter. #62 – Make Fun Happen, Create Cool Products & Improve The Environment | Chris Lynch

You’ve heard the first part of this story before.  Shit, it might have even happened to you. Chris Lynch graduated in 2008 with an Economics degree and was ready for a life full of Hedge Funds on Wall St.  A few years later, the San Diego native Lynch found himself on the beach with no job and no idea what to do.   The second part of this story is unique.   Lynch got a call from an old friend, Michael Samer.  Lynch and Samer worked together as tour guides for a kayak company in La Jolla.  Samer told Lynch that the business was selling and he wanted to buy it with Lynch.   With no entrepreneurial experience, Lynch said yes. The third part of the story is purely awesome. What started as a kayak tour company in 2010 has turned into a premier California lifestyle company, Everyday California.   “We want to make fun happen, create cool products and use business to improve the environment.” With merchandise, a 1% pledge for the environment and even their own IPA - they are accomplishing their mission. In this episode of the Millennial Momentum podcast, Chris and I talk about his entrepreneurial journey, his toughest moment in the business and how he’s built such a strong brand.   The fourth part of their story, the future, is unknown but Lynch is in no rush to expedite growth in if it damages the culture they’ve built.   And his advice for others who sit where we was in 2010?   Just start.  It’s too easy to not put a few hours a week into a passion project. “Whatever it is that you want to do, start right now.  Start today.” Listen Here: iTunes Google Play Stitcher Follow Everyday California: Site Instagram   Sign up for the weekly Millennial Momentum Newsletter. #60 Living With A Seal Book Review

Most of us are stuck in a routine. We do the same thing every morning – whether it’s waking up with our families, getting a workout in or heading straight to work – it usually doesn’t vary much. Jesse Itzler caught himself in this trap. Itzler cofounded Marquis Jet (which sold to Warren Buffet), helped to pioneer Zico coconut water (which sold to Coca-Cola) and currently owns the Atlanta Hawks. In his spare time, he runs ultramarathons. He is not someone you would categorize as needing to “shake things up” or get more fit. But that’s not how he saw it. He knew he needed a change. So, like any normal person, Itzler went down to the local gym and hired a trainer, right? Wrong. Instead, he cold-called a former Navy SEAL – and probably the toughest man alive – David Goggins. He asked Goggins to live with him and his family for 30 days. Wait, what? Itzler wrote about the experience in his book, “Living With A Seal.” I read it so you don’t have to. Here are 9 ways that Itzler’s decision can help you break through to the next level. “Most of my successes in life have come from learning how to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. Like I said, I just want to get better.” - Jesse Itzler Listen Here: iTunes Google Play Stitcher Sign up for the weekly Millennial Momentum Newsletter. No BS, All hustle
